This whole situation is dumb. The backers getting so butthurt to the point of insults and demanding refunds, Comcept hiring someone who has no relevancy to the project apart from the fact she knows people at Comcept.

Honestly the worst part is that she has a say in the art direction (considering she's both community manager and an artist). Normally I wouldn't mind, but her style is so out of place and bad. I'd have no problem with her being a community manager but if the art falters due to her being on the team I'm going to be annoyed.
 
You being a backer gives you absolutely zero input in what kind of business, employer acqusition or designs they will make. Of course not everyone working for the game is a former MM enthusiast. To demand something like that is to act childish.

What the fuck? I haven't ventured to the forums yet tbh, now I wonder if I'll bother. What a great way to start this business off. I shudder to think where we'll be in a year after a dozen design votes have come and gone. This is the last project I would expect or surely want to see derailed by its own community. I mean, I read the update in the email, thought the little art of her was pretty godawful, but that's where I left things. I dunno if I even feel like finding out all the details of what's happening.

Pretty much exactly my situation. I didn't think that the art was anything more than a "hey I'm introducing myself" bit of good will.

The lead character designer is Kimo Kimo and the art director is Shinsuke Komaki.
Yes, the rest of the team will have input, but what we will be seeing will largely be a result of those 2 guys.

Of course, I don't know about the development process, so I could be wrong on this.

I mean, yeah. It clashes horribly with the current style, but I think that was just fanart, not an attempt at a real design.

She's not directly creating the final art is she? I thought it was just concept sketches. The concept stuff doesn't necessarily have to fit the finalized stuff.

It's not childish, only because of the way she got in. I can see if they hired a designer with credentials and they never played a MM game, at least there someone who's in the industry and has experience. She got in through "connections." If you get in through "connections" I at least want to hear good things as to why they were put into the team through these "connections."

She's only the community manager so she doesn't really do much with the game. I just don't really like the designs she's showing off, they don't scream cartoonic robot to me.

I'm all for having more options, as far as playable characters go. But I want to play as Mighty No. 9. I love his design. I wont care if there is a female-bot, but if it is only a female bot, I'd be super disappointed(I don't think that'll happen).

You obviously haven't been following this very closely. She said she is a designer as well, and is doing robot designs. That was probably one of the twitter posts she scrubbed.

Seems pretty obvious this was a friends hiring friends deal that happened to blow up in their face. They'll be racing around deleting forum posts, banning people, and dealing with credit card chargebacks for a while then life will go on. The MN9 Kickstarter forum is a freakin' mess at the moment because of this.
 
So this video is being circulated on /v/ right now. 20 minutes of the same regurgitating SJW fearmongering crap you see all the time on /v/. This is a such a stupid thing to get worked up about. I agree that it sucks that nepotism got this Dina person a job as a community manager and a designer, but all this bitching and moaning about her possibly inserting her "feminazi" agenda into MN9 is pathetic. What is she going to do, make feminist robots that check your priveledge? Give me a break.

I want Mighty No. 9 to be the best it can be and now some overreacting idiots are demanding their backer money because of some petty crap. They are ruining this game because they actually believe that feminist are encroaching their precious hobby and ruining their games. It's kind of ironic that the kind of overreaction and whining 4chan mocks tumblr keyboard warriors lead them to act the same way.

Not to throw up a strawman here, but do you ask for a refund of your bus fare after you arrive safely at your destination just because the bus driver had tatoos?

You funded a kickstarter so a company can provide you a product under the pretense that you would have some input on the project and be part of a community, not that you would be able to micromanage their payroll, human resources, catering, lunchhour, vacation days, whatever. You are not a shareholder, you're someone who parted with your money in good faith that this company knows how to achieve this goal. If you feel like a fool now because you didn't understand what you were getting into, maybe that feeling is justified.

Personally, I can see how many people liked the idea. I can also see why it was unrealistic. I think that the developers already had a strong vision for who Beck was, and that wasn't going to change.

I've always been more interested in the idea of making Call a playable and important character. That's far more realistic and possible. And something we accomplished for the game via stretch goals. And maybe for the sequel that will be extended even further.

But I can see how some people were fond of the idea in the beginning. I found it to be a bit unrealistic. But it certainly wasn't a bad thing to be a fan of.

Exactly, which is why I'm complaining. Them spending money to fly over and hire someone for two positions, one for which she is clearly unqualified for, out of shear nepotism is what I feel needs to be addressed explained by the developers; backers deserve at least that much from them.

A large portion of 4chan is white, male, conservative and sheltered as all fuck. The only thing new about this is that developers will actually now have to listen to these people because they took their money to fund the game.

Seriously, people need to stop overreacting to the fanart.
She is not the lead character designer, nor the lead artist, she is one of many designers that make up the overall art/design team. We've only known the leads through the campaign, but there are many people below them that we don't know, and Dina too.
Whatever she designed may or may not be accepted in the final design as well. She simply designed them, they can easily be rejected, as was the case with many designs we've seen already.

And no matter what, the design of Beck will not change, I don't know why people are freaking over that fanart (which I dislike myself).
 
It's just fanart. Even then whatever she conceptualized will probably be drawn by the guy already working on the main designs. Games usually don't mix and match artsyles.

the fact that this even had a chance of coming into being is a strange and unsettling thing, I can understand the pushback to a degree, though some are taking it too far.

To be fair, the Kickstarter did explicitly state this...
Every aspect of development—art, level design, music, programming, etc.—is being handled by veteran Japanese game creators with extensive experience in the genre, and with Mega Man in particular, all the way up to and including the project’s leader, Keiji Inafune himself! Backers will have unprecedented access to seeing this team at work through blogs, podcasts, videos, concept art—the works!

So I can see some legitimacy in some complaints.
I think the reaction to her inclusion is stupid, but it is true that that will not be the case.

Getting in as a CM because you know someone at the company isnt that big of a deal as long as you do your job right. I only got my job because i had a friend working where i do now and i only keep it because i am good at it. If she is really also doing full NPC designs, and not just having input on design i feel she would have had to have adopted the house style and produced good designs, becauseeven if she had a friend at the company she would not be a designer if she continued to produce the same "quality" of her fembeck design.

I think she was already a resident of japan? If not do you know for a fact they paid for her to fly down and take residence? And it was out of the KS Money?

I don't see how she can be an effective community manager if she doesn't even know anything about the series. The fact that she lied about it makes it even worse. How can you expect someone who lies to the community on the first day to have good relations with it?

I think a worse part about it is that this is going to turn into another "disgusting gamers against feminism" thing because of the loudest jackasses saying sexist things instead of any of the more legitimate concerns that people may have. Case in point;

A community manager's responsibilities include interaction with the community, relaying input from the community to the development staff, all stuff pertaining to the project.

Absolutely none of that requires Mega Man knowledge.

Yes, and one of her first interactions with the community was lying to them, that's a really bad start. I don't see how you're supposed to be able to trust someone like that after that sort of first impression. I couldn't care less whether she's a feminist or whatever, that's her personal life.
