It was showing tonight as part of the campus film series. All I can say is....

What. The. Fuck.

Last half-hour has the most fucked-up stuff I've ever seen in a movie. And the climactic scene is decidedly... memorable.
I can safely say that it reinforced my homosexuality.

The very end made no sense, though.
"We put the girl in the tub and she was back to normal"? Huh?

Anyway, I don't even know whether or not I liked it.

Miike in a nutshell:

Audition is easily his best movie. Gozu is just weird and random. Ichi is sometimes fun and oftentimes violent. Dead or Alive is mostly boring, but the ending is so hilariously out of the blue that it might be worth seeing. Bird People of China is a little slow, but overall pretty good, and the ending is ace. Visitor Q is shock-funny and really pretty bad.

See Happiness of the Katakuris. Awesome film, and so insane.

Disagree, if the movie that I saw while a little bit off kilter was Audition...That is the movie that has the longass
acupuncture
section, right?

offhand, the must sees in his vast and low-budget filmography are probably (in chronological thanks to imdb):

bird people of china
audition
ichi
graveyard of honor
and maybe gozu

feel free to append or delete.

imo his best work is ichi. the easiest to digest is audition.

there are so many other great japanese (/korean/taiwanese/etc.etc.) filmmakers these days though (paging sporks). miike freak outs only get you so far.

How are the sequels?! Heh, I haven't bothered to pursued them because of that ending, but I hear DoA 3 is actually really good.

I pronounce his name Mee-Kay.

Gozu is... outstanding. Perfect blend of humor, action, and gore. Gozu is, imo, the definition of dark comedy.

I would see definitely Audition, definitely Ichi the Killer, and definite-fucking-ly Happiness of the Katakuris. Oh dude, you don't even know.

Graveyard of Honor is great, check that out, and then DOA (1-3?) is hit or miss. I've never seen Bird People of China, but it sounds pretty good just by the name alone.

God, Takeshi Miike is soooo good. Third only to Takeshi Kitano, who is second to Akira Kurosawa (eh, so I've mostly seen Japanese pop movies. So sue me.).

Is it out on DVD/VHS? Because I live in the doldrums of independant cinema, so I have no way of checking it out otherwise...

korean and thai movies are kicking my ass recently:
oldboy, last life in the universe, ong bak (the fighting was just fantastic).
now i dont know how many of you are wong kar wai fans, but if you are, you are probably also aware that the trademark visuals are mostly due to the talents of his default cinematographer Christopher Doyle (we're not worthy). when i was watching "Last life in..." i was blown away by the cinematography, and it made sense when i saw that Chris Doyle was the cinematographer for that movie as well.

I think the DVD for Bird People in China comes to NA on Nov. 16. I've yet to see it but I'm definitely gonna check it out.
Also, I don't recommend Audition. I guess you either like it or hate it.

you should check out sassy girl and my wife is a gangster/my wife is a gangster 2 (although i think part 1 was more entertaining)

Avoid My Wife is a Gangster. Horrible movie. Didn't bother with part 2 for obvious reasons.
Check out My Sassy Girl though. Even if you don't like romance comedies, this movie will get to you.

Happiness of the Katakuris, Graveyard of Honor and Gozu are my most recent favorites.

I was lucky enough to meet Miike briefly on one of his sets in Tokyo...a very cool guy.
