Miitomo |OT| A new way of COMMUnication

Do I create a Japanese AppStore account to download the app for free? Do I have to link any other accounts to the app? And is it iOS 9 exclusive or does it work on earlier versions?

Can't help but feel like this is going to flop in the west. Nintendo hasn't even bothered to advertise it and it's supposed to be almost here. Oh well

Do you need to advertise apps in the same way as console games though? I'm not saying that you don't need to make a splash at launch - that absolutely matters - but I'd suspect console games are much more frontloaded, a lot of big activity and the most of it ahead of the game coming out. But for apps, it's more important that the app is available at the time of advertisements - and you start to see the full on marketing push later once there's a bit of buzz and life around the app.

Not to say I don't think Nintendo should do more now, of course. I just wonder if the expectations of how they push it might need to be a bit different.

I seriously cannot believe this STILL hasn't released here. Not even a date.

The interest could have bounced off of Japan with momentum, yet here we are.

I sideloaded it of course, but now all my friends keep asking it it's released yet because I have it and i keep having to tell them 'no not yet'.

I think this update is going to be when it happens.

Nintendo's break out mobile app, based on casual social play, and has a non existent marketing campaign.

This is probably Nintendo's most easily accessible "game" and we're hearing nothing with a holiday weekend approaching. The big chance to get everyone hooked and signed into the MyNintendo system and bleed interest into other Nintendo games and products.

But nothing. I'm not mad at the Big N but I just want to see them kick some tail when everything is aligning.

I hope so as well. That "Friends of Friends" bullet point is pretty substantial.

Really frustrated we don't even have a date yet. Been waiting on buying some games since I want to take advantage of the new rewards program and now it's a long weekend and we don't have any news whatsoever.

Nintendo didn't advertise in Japan either (from what I've heard) and it still got to a million users in three days. Apple promoted Miitomo in the App Store. I'd say wait and see. Could go either way here.

And the best part is that it was delayed so they could promote it properly.

This was obviously not true, it doesn't make sense. It had to be that something wasn't on track, whether that was My Nintendo, Miitomo or something else. Maybe some of their other smartphone projects were behind schedule and they didn't want to create a huge gap between the releases, who knows?

Nintendo's silence about it is really weird.
We know it'll be released in less than a week in the West so why not just spill the release date.

Let's just hope their goal was not to crash MyNintendo's debut, otherwise I fear about their upcoming mobile games.

Here's the thing. Marketing a mobile game isn't the same as marketing a console game, they might seem similar because they're, well...games, but they're two different beasts. It's even harder to market a game that really isn't a game.

The hopes for something like this is to have it spread through word of mouth, which I believe is the optimal way to sell this kind of software. The game took off pretty nicely in Japan because people saw it on the front of the app store, they saw it was Nintendo, they saw they could create those silly Miifotos. This is what we hope to happen in the west. If JoeYouTube tweets crazy looking Miifotos to his thousands and thousands of followers from this app, his followers are likely to download it.

I'll use RogersBase as an example here. He's mostly known for doing One Piece videos, that's what people are looking for when they go to his channel. When he tweets his first Miifoto, you can bet that many of his followers, the ones that don't already know about the app, will go out and download it.

In addition to all that, it's likely to be front and center on all of the app stores come release day. People will see it. Also, it's important to know that they will put out a press release, and it will get covered on all the major gaming sites in addition to the not-so-gaming sites that will report on the first app from Nintendo.

Miitomo will do fine in the West too. Because the people will download it out of curiosity. What I'm not sure about is that target of 100 mio. accounts. And I'm not sure how it will fare in the long run, it doesn't seem to keep the attention going too much past the launch honeymoon. The content is not the most brilliant.

Considering Miitomo points count as platinum points = you can buy software or get discounts with them, that seems at least a reasonable engagement mechanic for starters.

Awesome, thanks a bunch! Just tried it but I messed up the timing >_<. I've ran out of tickets and coins though so now I gotta wait for my next chance. You're saying that I need to keep the Mii in the middle right?

Yes keep the mii in the middle and drop directly onto the platform. Also another tip is to press and hold the drop button and wait till the right timing to drop the mii.

So many titles I'd like to buy digitally yet won't because Nintendo's taking so long to activate MyNintendo over here...

I'd be amazing if tonight's update indeed leaded to Miitomo -and- MyNintendo releasing tomorrow but at this point I'm all but sure it's gonna be a March 31 release. *sigh*

Such contrasting (possibly) hints. On one hand, full translated events and app + eShop updated hours ago to include "Just for you" deals. On the other, March 2016 "disappearing", which would mean both the release date incoming or a delay.

Still, I fear Nintendo has not given a solid release date yet due to the fact it doesn't depend on them, Apple has to okay the Western release. It's a software released not on their storefront, they're not completely in control.

EDIT: Just checked Miitomo's italian FAQ, btw. MyNintendo is still referenced as launching in March, while the March 2016 bubble disappeared on the official site, like elsewhere.

That is heart breaking. Will we ever get to experience in real life digital a cat-on-shoulder or a VR head mounted display?

I want to believe!

I knew this would happen. This sucks. The JP game is already in English. There is absolutely no reason to delay this further. At this rate we won't see the game until mid-May.

Let's not jump to conclusions yet. It's still possible that Nintendo is very sloooowly updating the website.

I really don't want to side-load. Not trying to mess with changing my iTunes account (I tried for a second and everything from the Apple Store app to the App Store turned Japanese and asked for my password 900 times. But I guess if it's not out by April 1st I'll have no choice.

No Miitomo in March = we'll get it in May.

Why mid-May? The app's already translated, MyNintendo pages as well. Also, MyNintendo specific features have appeared on the eShop. Hopefully, Apple/Google/Nintendo won't make us wait too long.

No, really, I want to understand why a delay means necessairly May.

Why not now if the game is finished? If it's not ready now, chances are it won't be ready for at least a month. This is 2016 Nintendo here. You know, Yarn Yoshi Nintendo? The delay Star Fox Zero 3 times Nintendo? The Zelda U isn't even coming out on the Wii U Nintendo?

May is a conservative guess tbh.

This is so nosensical / hyperbolic that it's better for me to leave the thread now before going in too deep, sorry.

I hope I'm wrong too, but if we don't see a release in March I don't think we'll see a release in April. Something seems to be holding it back, be that content, server capacity or otherwise.

Hey.

HEY!

Yarn Yoshi is fantastic.

You can't truly believe Zelda U will skip Wii U, jax.

It really would be something I'd they delayed a fully translated game for no apparent reason.

Well they still haven't release the last Kawashima game that's fully translated in Europe. So yeah...

I go in the wardrobe, change clothes, go in the shop, try stuff on and don't get the necessary style points :/

I'm on level 9 right now but I've seen people with style points up to 12 but can't figure out how to get it higher.

Same for personality points - been stuck at level 7 for a while now despite furiously liking, commenting and sending stuff to Twitter (as well as answering my own questions) can't figure it out!

some legal agreements with stores perhaps... I really don't know.
I'm guessing it's a major update to the app itself holding it up. The stores have zero issues allowing hundreds of blatant Pokemon clones and other terrible apps, I wouldn't blame Apple and Google. This is classic Nintendo. "If we delay it, they'll discuss it more! Free marketing!" As they scurry to update things that don't really need a fix for launch.

I signed up to this when it was announced, I only knew about it because I had seen a thread here on GAF about it, I linked my NNID, but I have not had anything in way of contact from Nintendo at all, I have only just remembered that this exists because I stumbled on a thread about Miitomo on the first page of GAF, I play my 3DS daily & also have a WiiU, so if I am not in the loop about this, with only days to go before it is supposed to be released, it doesn't bode well :/

#TeamDelay :p

I didn't catch up on miitomo at all except for the very basic stuff, it seems to be quite well received, yes?

Having your Miitomo friend list carry across to the NX would be great.
We're gonna get to know these Mii's and their opinions really well, ultimately getting to play NX games with them would be a good final step.
NX messaging could be handled through here when offline too.

It's very strange that this doesn't import friends from Wii U or 3DS. Face-to-face, Facebook, and Twitter only means I will probably never have any friends on this damn game. Hopefully NX friends lists will be connected. The My Nintendo link is very smooth.
