Minecraft |OT2| Punch Your Way to Your Own World

Yeah, the ability to build huge structures on the very top of the tallest mountains is going to be extremely freeing. I honestly doubt I'll often get very close to the new 256 limit, but being able to build in the 128 - 180 range makes me smile. So many times in this game I've hit the ceiling and wanted to go just a bit higher. I couldn't even count the number of times that's happened to me in Minecraft. But yeah, I admit, my first mega project in SSP is going to indeed be a tower to 256. Just because I can, lol.

Once Neocraft goes to 1.2, I expect Sky City to take on a whole new level of being. I know I plan on making myself an island above the clouds...

Man, I will be able to build a MASSIVE fall damage mob grinder...
I wonder what is the limit distance that mobs can spawn from the player in Y axis (up)
Is it me or I heard that there's only a limit in X and Z??

The new pathfinding algorithm is absolutely terrifying. It doubled the difficulty of the game for me as my strategy has always been to build narrow Swiss passages up to my houses so skeletons will fall off. No longer works. Zombies might even be more dangerous than skeletons now that range is only a slight advantage. Spiders are terrifying, but I only encountered one and couldn't tell if it was using any new AI.

YES. It's actually awesome. I was making fun of creeper falling in those small ponds you can find in forests you know. They are fucking smart and they move around them now!! lol

I have the weird lightning too, first thought it was a fortress the first time because it was perfectly square xD

There is also some lightning errors on the water when you swim some random blocks around you become darker.

Played for the first time in a while last night. Created a new world to check out the new stuff, and spent a couple of in-game days exploring. Second night, and I'm holed up in a little shelter in a rock face, and I've got the game running in the background while I'm browsing the net. Suddenly there's this bashing sound, and I'm like what the fuck, so I quickly close the browser and check the entrance. Just in time too, as a zombie kicks my fucking door down and heads for me with a creeper right behind it!

I'm like "shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit"! Slaps a couple of cobblestones on the floor to stop them, then quickly digs my way to the surface. As soon as I get there I get an arrow in the back from somewhere, so in complete panic mode by then I just jumped right off the cliff and into the ocean.

Survival mode has just been made even better. I kind of want to start playing again, but I like my old world (and have put tons of hours into it) and don't really want to start new one.

Has anyone looked up villagers now? They're supposed to socialise and defend themselves now, but I don't have access to the game for at least five hours.

Don't know about socialise but they certainly don't defend themselves. I just whacked a few and they stood there and took it like pussies. Didn't drop any loot either.

Notch gives away 3 million dollars to his employees.

https://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/175174949277941760

He is da man.

That's just beautiful. I love this game so much, but more than that I love the success story it is, and I love how the creator of all of this is handling his success. In all of my decades of gaming, it's like the best overall gaming experience I've ever had I think (both in and out of the game). And when stacked against gaming juggernauts like Blizzard and Microprose and Janes and other long gone developers, that's saying a lot for me.

I'll bet those employees are damn proud to be working for a boss like Notch. With enthusiasm like that, it just makes me even more excited for Minecraft's future.

I haven't really played the game at all since Beta 1.9Pre3 (so technically I played with a lot of the 1.0 stuff, just not in The End). I briefly read through the last few patch notes last night after noticing the 1.2 trailer pop up on my Youtube account, and it seems there's been more changes than I realized since 1.0 came out.

Are there any major issues right now in the latest build with world creation? I kind of want to start a new world but not if something like Snow is missing or there's some weird glitch with tree generation... I hate playing and feeling like I can't explore because I don't want to generate bad chunks.

So I loaded my old world and checked out the perimeter:

Yeah. That's fucked. I thought we weren't going to have to deal with this shit once v1.0 dropped?

Yep. Mine did it too. Chunk boundaries will still mess up due to the world gen code changing, but what won't happen ever again is biome data getting screwed up. For example, it will still snow where it snowed pre 1.2, and rain where it rained. Biome and world gen data are stored per chunk now. The big part of this is that new chunks with all new changes will now always generate on old maps now, where in the past this wouldn't always happen.

I'm still starting a new map tho. The world gen is far more interesting in 1.2 than it was in 1.1.

Pretty much impossible to not have this happen when you're using just a seed to determine world generation, rather than the world itself.

Eh, hard to do, but not impossible. Jeb has stated more than once about integrating world gen boundary smoothing routines into the code. It's part of why he wanted biome and version number stored with chunk data. Patch 1.2 is a huge step towards that. If smoothing techniques were in the game then he could tweak and change world gen code at will and not have it look so jarring between patch boundaries.

With the way Jeb has been tracking lately, I actually wouldn't be surprised to see it this year yet.

Right! That would be doing as I said, and using the existing chunks to generate the new chunks, rather than just using the seed, as has been done in the past. So what I said still remains true. :D I am similarly excited for once this task is complete.

Yeah, I thought they weren't messing around with that area of the game anymore, that's what I'm saying. Didn't Notch say something a while back about having updated the biome code so that it would be easier to add new ones in without causing this shit?

The reason I started playing again when it hit v1.0 was because I thought my world would be safe from "update damage" at last. Guess not.

Ages ago, back in the Alpha days, I created a world and spent the whole time in it living underground. The only time I saw the surface was on the first day, which I spent gathering the resources I needed to lead my subterranean life. Well I'm going to do that again. Fuck the surface, and fuck wasting my time building things on it. It's hardcore mode and all out action from now on!

Nope. It was always about adding new biomes without BREAKING old worlds, which it used to do if the changes were drastic enough (I think? it's been so long I might be making this up). Then they made it so it wouldn't break old worlds, but new stuff wouldn't be in them. Then they made it so new stuff COULD be in them, but it would look ugly at the borders between old/new. There were never any promises about making the old/new transition smoother. Until now!

Final timelapse GIF of my "Project: Madness". I'm pretty sure I'll never do anything this massive and time consuming in Minecraft again.

I'm just curious -SD-, why didn't you use TNT or enchantments? If you are gathering the gunpowder legitimately, did you still see that as "cheating?"

Seriously though that's incredible. I've been keeping an eye on your progress in this thread and I'm floored (no pun intended).

Also, you should seriously post another picture of your map. That project there is crazy but your whole world is insane for one person playing legit.

Continuing my break from the dome, I built a barn.

This arose from the need to have a larger, more organized storage area. Plans to build a barn someday were on the mind so I killed two birds with one stone. The first floor has ten pens to hold cattle, pigs, and chickens. Up in the loft are enough chests to keep me going for quite a while, a crafting table, and a battery of furnaces. Played around redstone, something haven't paid much attention to as of yet, to get the double iron doors to work in the manner I wanted.

All in all it was a fun diversion. I'm happy with how useful the is actually turning out to be.

I wanted to go as "vanilla" as possible with this excavation.

Oh, so that isn't on the server? I gotcha. I thought this was on NeoCraft.
SSP is mentioned in the GIF :)

Funny thing about TNT: it's not nearly as useful as you'd think when it comes to large-scale excavations like this. I tried to do a similar project on one of the NeoCraft servers a long while ago, and I ended up getting Op powers at some point in the middle of the project. I figured, "hey, unlimited TNT... I'll be able to finish this in no time". The problem is that when it comes to Stone, TNT will only blow up a 3x3x3 cube of the stuff, so it really didn't speed the process up a whole lot.

I know what you mean. The only real advantage I can see is you get less cobblestone waste.

Ok, I created a rail system between my Mountain Cabin and a place near Skycity.

Anyone wants to build alongside the railroad (or the road next to it) fine.

Please, dont build on the forest to the other side of my Mountain Cabin.

I would like to maybe build a village on the road.

PS - Anyone has a problem if I connect my railroad all the way to skycity? I mean, its gonna be visible and some might find it not aesthetically pleasing.

I'm pretty sure they won't mind since there's a railway going from Dome City to the Spawn then to Sky City.

That's true, but what if he dug a pit down and stuck like 100 blocks of TNT in it? It would make a massive crater that wouldn't have had to be dug by hand. I guess the irregular form of it afterwards would be more of a pain to deal with though.

I've never really messed with that much TNT before. I usually just use it when I need a predictable blast.

You can always just use the existing rail that goes to dome city and the spawn and just have it branch off to your cabin where it reaches the mainland. :]

Maybe even expand upon it a bit so it has room for even more rails.

Good idea, though my rail system is pretty simple and bare.

I have been playing Minecraft for awhile but I never used Redstone really.

So creating the rail system has been kinda of a pain for me.

]Also, Id like to connect my Skycity house to my Mountain Cabin. :)

If the 9x9x2 block doesnt work make it 10x10x2 and spam torches everywhere. They will stop spawning eventually. I feel your pain.

Well ..... shit.

Also, I think I've just found out the hard way that passive mobs won't spawn in underground farms anymore.

I finally got around to updating Minecraft after not playing for quite a while, and I have a new issue I've never seen. There's a glitchy square around my mouse cursor which creates sort of a hall of mirrors effect within that square as I move around in the game. I made sure Java and my graphics drivers were up to date but the problem persists.

I'm not sure I'm ready to commit to playing again yet anyway though, since we're still getting patches that screw up our old worlds.
