We're starting the new year with an aggressive, in your face theme. Our community is showcasing their close combat specialists this month, those who would rather bring the fight right up to the noses of their hated enemies. It takes a special sort of warrior to trust their melee weaponry in order to charge into battle and face their opponent head on, but you can bet that when they bring their trusted weapons to bear they're very likely to masterfully carve a path through the line or level an entire squad that stands in their way.

Took down a unit of Man O' War Shocktroopers with Officer (closeup). Got these guys done over a couple days. Technically they have guns in their shields (which is a very silly thing) but they're hot trash; these dudes definitely wanna march up the field as an unbreakable phalanx until they get close enough to lay waste with those big axes.

My hand to hand specialist is not quite infantry size, but can't go wrong with four extragalactic swords of unknown origin, can you? I'm not sure if my modification to the Hive Tyrant / Swarmlord were for the better in the end, but at least it's unique.

Sylvaneth Branchwych
Sylvaneth Dryads
I finally jumped in on some Sylvaneth to add more variety to my order army - which now a Stormcast, Seraphon and Sylvaneth joint force. I have something like 5000 points worth of models and only about 1600 or so are actually painted. A lot of work ahead of me on this one but I've been breaking it down into smaller projects. This one was the Branchwych and a unit of Dryads. I decided to go with an autumn theme after seeing Android's sweet Kurnoth Hunters a few months back.
I'm really happy with how they came out.

This is an Oniwaban, from the Japanese Sectorial Army from Infinity. Although the game isn't very melee friendly, I started a fireteam of JSA soldiers because I absolutely love ninja. This is cheating a little because he has a pistol, but Oniwaban really deal their damage with their swords. The studio model is painted green rather than blue, but I wanted to try these colors for my own ninja and I like how it came out. The red sheath especially sets it off. The base is meant to meld industrial and nature settings, and for me, the brightly colored valve and flowers bring it all together nicely. Fun model to paint, very imposing, but unfortunately kind of annoying to assemble.
Wonderful work as always. We've got a steady stream of entries every month, but starting in March we'll have an open category for those who have made some headway in their painting pile. The themed category will still exist as it does now. It'll serve as a way of helping people break out of a painting rut or as an exercise in something atypical of what you might be used to painting. Everyone is welcome to step up to the challenge. And as it's the start of a new year, the choices for the March group build will be shaken up as well. For February, our theme will be:
Cover Up
- Scatter terrain or large terrain feature
- Single or multiple pieces, any landscape
- Include a brief description of your approach to this challenge
The choices for the February group build are:
- BFG (single model with ranged heavy weapon)
- Yes, Sergeant! (Single squad leader model)
- One Shot, One Kill (Single sniper model)
- Duel at Dusk (Multiple model diorama)
