Mitch Hurwitz has recut Arrested Development S4 into a full season of 22-min episodes

The recut is 22 episodes, each 22 minutes in length, and includes previously unused footage from the S4 shoot as well as new narration from Ron Howard. The bad news? There are no plans to release it, as of yet.

On Wednesday, Hurwitz said he's actually recut the entirety of the 15-episode fourth season (episodes ran more than 30 minutes, with one as long as 42 minutes) into — wait for it — 22 episodes with a running time of 22 minutes.

Um, what?

It's true. And right now that creator's cut of season four — which even features new Ron Howard narration — is just sitting on a shelf. There's a lot of moving parts when it comes to Arrested Development, and who knows if those 22 episodes will appear on Netflix or some 20th Century Fox showcase of some sorts. How and when this private project of Hurwitz's sees the light of day is probably more business-based than any of us can figure out.

Hurwitz also reiterated his desire to begin filming S5, it's just dependent on getting all the actors together.

"We're very close," Hurwitz promised. "It's a thing I really am desperate to do. We've got a lot of the stories broken. We're kinda ready to go. I'm so appreciative of the fans wanting more, I hate to tease them with information that there is going to be more until we know for sure, but it's what we're trying to accomplish and if does happen, it looks like shooting would be at the start of 2017. That's what I'm hoping."

I need to see that recut.

I'm in for researching season 4 recut. I liked the season, but I thought it was difficult to get into at first.

I really want season 5 though. Even if it were super short, I hate the fact that they took away any closure that the original three seasons gave.

Can never have too much ad

Side note: I actually have a dvd of dailies somewhere. According to the place I downloaded it they found a dvd of uncut footage at a thrift store

Like I get that it's probably around the same total runtime, but I had enough trouble making it through half of 15 episodes of season 4 and find the idea of 22 episodes (better cut or not) nigh impossible. Really did want to love S4 too.

I've always wanted to give Season 4 another watch but the first two episodes are so utterly boring that they always kill my motivation right off the bat, even though the rest of the season was excellent.

I would watch this. I was a rabid supporter of AD through seasons 1-3. Season 4...I could t make it through three episodes.

I really want to see this, if only to gauge whether or not it improves the overall quality of the season. I didn't hate it like some people seem to, but I don't really like it either.

My biggest problem is that it's clear that all of the cast was not available simultaneously due to scheduling, which is why the season is structured the way it is. Chopping up the episodes won't fix that core issue.

I could get into that. 30 mins felt too long and disrupted the quick rhythm of the show I think. Did they ever fix the bizarre (bad) sound mixing on S4?

I'm tired of hearing about this with no plan of releasing it.

Ditto. I love Mitch and the show, but this recut has been the only thing going on since S4 came out and it's just getting old. I'm glad to know it got completed, but it won't exactly change S4--certainly if it can't get out either.

Wonder if talking about this publicly is a stunt to grease the wheels behind-the-scenes.

I would like this and also a second season of Running Wilde while we are in the business of getting surprising things from Mitchell Hurwitz.

Why not both?

Seinfeld is on Hulu and also syndicated everywhere. Arrested Development doesn't have quite enough episodes for networks to consider syndication.

If Netflix owns the show whole hog like I think they do, there's not really much reason for them to branch out like that.

Then again, they fucking greenlit Stranger Things so what do I know

Thinking about seasons 1 to 3 I have come around to the idea that they were setting Michael up to be as bad as ever other Bluth but I still don't like the execution in Season 4. Plus they took away one of his defining characteristics which was that he was competent.

I'll always have 1 to 3. It's more than enough.

It was all worth it just to see George Michael sock his dad in the mouth and the resulting complete look of bewilderment and rage afterward

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Loved S1-3, quit S4 after ep2. Will hold out to give it a second chance if this ever comes to light though.

How to set up a show for disappointment:

I really liked Lady Dynamite.

Lady Dynamite definitely had an air of Arrested about it. It's very much it's own thing, but I loved both for largely overlapping reasons. Both were hilarious, really densely written, and had wonderful, ridiculous supporting casts.

I'd be interested.

S4 got a bad rap for what I think was mostly for the format change rather than the writing, which was great as ever.

Having episodes follow only one character just doesn't capture the same feeling, while having big jumps forward and back in the timeline could make it feel less cohesive.

I think the season still worked and was clever in how they did the timeline stuff with call backs being actual flashbacks and flash forwards and then having interweaving plots be a scene in one time period that has a pay off or a gag in a later episode or add something that completely changes the context or explains a scene from a previous episode. I'm glad they made season 4 the way they did since some of that stuff will be lost in a more structured, and perhaps more standard chronological episode format, but I think reformatting it could add a whole new perspective to seeing how everything unfolds.

For instance, there was a lot of call back to Lucille's maritime trial showing why each family member didn't show up when it eventually happens, but if you watch it all happening to see that no one showed up all at once, it would make the build up have a better payoff than it did in the original cut where the reveal in each episode was how another family member didn't make it.

On the flip side, a gag like the family meeting in Lucille's apartment where they reveal a new family member that attended every episode, wouldn't have the same impact when you see everyone at once.

I hope they release it. It's one of my favorite shows ever just for the writing alone.

I'd go as far as to say people shitting on Season 4 just didn't get it. It was quality.

Speaking of which...

A recut can't save them from assassinating Michael Bluth. Sorry.

It wasn't a character assassination. There was an arc for every character that took them to very uncharacteristic, perhaps even opposite places with their personality.

I think it was supposed to be the curse that Marky Bark put on George Sr. as the Divine Spirit when he says the strong will become weak and the weak will become strong.

Michael who is always thinking of his family, especially his son, becomes selfish even going as far as to try to sneak behind his sons back while dating the same girl he knows his son is with. George Sr. becomes sensitive and feminine to the point he actually dresses like a woman. George Michael becomes successful with the ladies and so on. I took it all as a set up for the movie (since I've read that season 4 was basically written as a prequel for all the change that has happened in the years after the show was cancelled and the time the movie takes place in) and since we still haven't gotten a movie, all those character arcs don't really have as good of a payoff as they were intended.

I wonder if he recut them to be good . . .

That was one season that I dragged my heels on, I think it took me a month to get force my way to get through it.

This has to be released in some form. Why work on it otherwise? I'll take a home release at this point.

Season 4 was a slog due to the format, so hopefully this improves it.

I don't think they do. Season 4 was released on DVD by Fox, for instance.

According to this, Fox owns most of the rights:

While Netflix held the exclusive broadcast rights during the initial release window, Fox owns the distribution rights to the series on other forms of media.

Pretty surprising to see so many people down on S4. It was a bit jarring at first (mostly because everyone looked quiet a bit older and they tried to just play the thing straight) but I loved seeing the new format unfold and all the payoff.

I'm watching AD for the first time. I should not've read those S4 spoilers. That said, I also didn't know S4 episodes were long; I definitely think a 22-episode season, each at 22 minutes, would feel better paced.
