Jason Bateman on Arrested Development S5: "Everybody is in every episode"

Finally.

I know some people who liked the structure of the last season, but that was terrible. Couldn't even finish the damned thing.

The worst parts of the season were the Lindsay and George Sr eps and the over long episodes in general. Cut the fat. There's tons of boring stuff in the episodes. You could make a really good season out of what's there.

There is still an amazing show in places of season 4. Unfortunately the newness of Netflix made the team think they needed for episodes to be far longer than they needed to be and the split cast hurt the chemistry.

I can't believe that people can deny the greatness of the GOB episode and Tobias stuff. The worst shit was the Michael and George Michael bullshit. Everything else was tolerable

Season 4 was excellent and much better than other sitcoms. Even though it was inconsistent and not as good as previous seasons.

Well that's good news, might actually give it another shot then.

S4 was obnoxious and unfunny, I couldn't even make it to the end. It was just...awkward and kind of depressing at points. The only episode I actually enjoyed was GOB.

Season 4 is tough because all the worst episodes are at the beginning. It never reaches regular AD heights but it does get good. The George Sr episodes in particular are especially bad.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Such a fan of the first three seasons but never got around to S4 after the Internet collectively dumped on it. Probably time I watch.

I'm actually in the middle of rewatching the first few seasons and my god, this has to be one of the funniest shows ever made.

That absolutely amazing coffin-trick-gone-awry scene always makes me cry with laughter.

I don't think season 4 deserves all the hate. Like, they did what they could, whatever, it's not the end of the world. It had some pretty good stuff too. Better than no AD at all.

Glad to hear they're going back to the best version though !

Yeah its not like there was an alternative to season 4 format at the time given actors' schedules. It was either that or no season 4, from what I understand. Looking forward to season 5 though!

I recently watched S4 and was horrified during the first half. But like many have said, it gets much better. The problem is that all the payoffs come in the second half and you have to endure hours of setups. The last few episodes are vintage AD.

There were many issues overall:
-Episodes were too long (that smoking gag...)
-Too many useless cameos, especially in the second Michael episode
-Call-backs were way too obvious and forced
-Michael is completely different character
-More "clever" than funny
-Too ambitious

I really, really want to watch Mitch Hurwitz's season 4 re-edit. There's no precedent for it but it would be amazing if Netflix let him release it along the original 4 so people could choose.

You're a big guy.
The writing in season 4 was just as sharp as it was in earlier seasons, the problems arose from having to separate characters and actors who didn't function well in an ensemble. This is great news.

Oh fuck yes! Way more excited.

I couldn't disagree more with those saying there's nothing to fix with Michael. Yes he was always a shitty person. He's a Bluth. He wasn't absolutely fucking pathetic though. In S1-3 he and Lucille were the only two Bluths who had the strength to deal with the overwhelming stupidity of the rest of the clan. S4 Michael is hopeless.

I hope season 5 cuts out those awful side characters from season 4. Like Rebel Ally and Marky Bark or whatever his name was. And all the celebrity cameos were more distracting than anything else.

That'd involve going back to episode 1. Michael was always an awful person.

Not really. S1-3 Michael would have never dated his son's girlfriend behind his back. Hell, Michael had trouble dating women early on because he was worried George Michael wasn't ready yet. S4 Michael was a far worse person than he was before. I don't even know how that's up for debate.

I think I'm in the minority on this one but I really dislike Maria Bamford and her brand of wackiness and could do without her character.

Season 4 was mostly better on a second viewing like every other season. Especially because I was able to better understand the timeline of events of what happened and when. The first time through it all seems kinda muddled together.

But the second viewing was also when I really noticed how often they were abusing body doubles and camera angles. If anything I was kinda amazed that they made it as good as they did with that limitation.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much

There is something "off" in virtually every scene with Henry Winkler and Liza Minelli, be it green screen, body doubles etc. I'm glad that all the characters were in the show but it's all quite messy, the scheduling must have been a nightmare.

I wish they forced an episode length limit on this too. The fox ones were so tight whereas with the Netflix episodes the jokes were hurt by the editing not being as snappy due to having such free reign

The silliness of AD only works when its snappy. This is what sunk the season even more than the split up cast.

Probably a little under a year away then. Exciting.

I say this every AD thread, but S4 was really solid and basically relies on a rewatch. Even the original run's humor drew heavily from noticing little things, even more so with S4.

Yeah, the writing was fine. I think another problem is that as a function of the way the story is told in season 4, parceled out by character, things can't really get rolling full steam until the later episodes when all the threads start to come together. I've found that going back to it a second time, I enjoyed season 4 a lot more when I knew where it was heading.

That's neither an excuse for nor a endorsement of the final product, but I guess they were trying to make the best of a less than ideal situation. It's a shame, because I feel like without the scheduling conflicts, there's a really excellent season hidden in there. The gags are still largely on point, you just don't always have the full context for them and they don't work as well without the interplay of the core cast.

Mitch's recut S4 I think has each episode running closer to the Fox ones, so hopefully he's carrying that over to here too.

Great news, glad everyone will be together, really missed seeing the classic AD family dynamic in S4.

I'd also really like to finally see the redone S4 already, its been finished for ages but doesn't get released for some reason.

Sounds good to me. Get the cast interacting more and keep the episodes below 30 minutes (i mean, as a rule, but mainly to make sure the scenes move quickly), and I think this is gonna be good. Season 4 had a lot of funny stuff in it but that was obscured by these two issues, and also like many people have pointed out, it starts quite badly and gets better in the later episodes, but hopefully that won't be an issue here and they can get the jokes up and running right away.

How do you know this? I take it there's no way to see this recut yet, right?
