I don't understand why the tigers did.

heck while they likely got him to bolster their roster, I wouldn't completely rule out them shipping him at the trade deadline last minute to a non rival for a better return lol.

Rosenthal tweets that there's no cash exchanging hands in the deal, so the D-backs will assume the remainder of Martinez's $11.75MM salary. That means they'll be on the hook for about $4.82MM through season's end.
