MLB 2K5 - Command Baserunning; Active PIP Baserunning, Max Sliding, Baseburner Mode

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 2005--2K Sports, the sports division of 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. announced today a revolutionary gameplay innovation, offering fans of America's pastime the most complete baseball video game simulation. Set to release in early spring 2005, Major League Baseball 2K5 debuts On Command(TM) Baserunning, that includes active picture-in-picture baserunning, and new gameplay features called Maximum Sliding(TM) and Baseburner(TM) Mode.

Players will immediately experience a new way to see and control baserunners through the active picture-in-picture display. Using the four corners of the television screen to represent the bases, players will be able to see the actions of any baserunner through real-time picture-in-picture windows. Baserunners will advance along the borders of the television screen not only to show the actual distance, but also to show the actions they're performing. This feature empowers the user with instant real-time movement of baserunners and the ability to instantly control any baserunner independently. Active picture-in-picture baserunning delivers both an exciting presentation style and an intuitive method to precisely control runners.

Baseball has been called a game of inches and with Maximum Sliding(TM) players make every inch count. This new baserunning mechanic utilizes the right analog thumbstick to choose how baserunners slide -- head or feet first -- in conjunction with hook sliding left or right of the base. Players will be able to reach a base quicker, get up more quickly from a slide, or avoid being tagged out with the new freedom found in Maximum Sliding(TM).

Leading the list of On Command(TM) Baserunning features is the groundbreaking Baseburner(TM) Mode that offers both unique control and perspective. Baseburner Mode allows the gamer to play any 'at-bat' through the perspective of any baserunner, delivering precision control to gamers. While playing in the baserunner perspective, the player can tell the batter how, when and what type of swing to use. Players with multiple baserunners can cycle through any man on base or return to the default view and control the batter. Gamers can dominate the basepaths by advancing runners into scoring position, executing hit and run maneuvers, and scoring the game-ending run with a dramatic squeeze play. All of this can happen using the unique control mechanics and dynamic camera angles of Baseburner Mode.

Major League Baseball 2K5 is set to release in early spring 2005 for both the Xbox(R) videogame system from Microsoft(TM) and the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system.

Whoopedy damn doo. I want info on the franchise mode, Take 2. Primarily if you're getting off your lazy asses this year and doing it up right with full A-AAA levels. You got the exclusive MLB license, use it!

You're not going to have the ability to control minor league teams in MLb2K5 like you can in MVP 2005. MVP has some awesome ideas implemented in their baseball game it is too damn bad EA is losing the license. Starting next year we will be forced to buy the inferior baseball game.

The only baseball game I have enjoyed in the past decade has been Baseball Mogul for the PC. (If you haven't played it... DOWNLOAD it now!)

Thanks to EA we're now going to be forced to buy the inferior football game, so I guess it evens itself out.

Wow! "Maximum Sliding" "Picture-in-picture"

Both of these are features that last year's MVP Baseball had, just with fancy names. VC's behind the curve, and no of amount press releases will change that.

i haven't been able to stand sega's mlb effort for the past 2 years. the gloves
look like they are made of some other-worldly substance, and the stances are
just unbearable to look at... everything is way off in that game.

last year i got mvp and was pretty happy with it... got about halfway
through a season before i got tired of it (mostly due to lack of a live update-able
roster on xbox).

this year, i am looking forward to sony's effort. i know it has always been
horrible in the past, but i have been hearing great things about it. the videos
i have seen look awesome too.

i think i'll be giving sony's effort a try this year. check out the video and you'll
see what i'm talking about -

anyone else with me?

I can't buy MLB 2006 now.

I watched the video on the website, and the first thing they show is Sammy Sosa hitting a home run in a Cubs uniform at Wrigley Field. Then doing the hop, rounding the bases and high fiving his teammates in the dugout. Grr.

Seriously, the video looks pretty damn good. The character models aren't the best, BUT they animate very well. Plus it seems like the MLB 2006 team has the main characteristics down of the big time players. Like having Sammys hop down, Mannys swing pattern, Ichiros warm up swings. The overall onfield gameplay animation looks better than any other baseball game. How smooth the models move is amazing. Good stuff.

supposedly, every single stance has been been animated... not for just the huge stars. watching the ichiro ritual really makes me want to run up in the development studio with guns and start blazing the place until i find a playable build.

i want this game so bad. are you seriously not getting it because of the sammy clip?

just curious if anyone else is going to give this one a try.

I'm not staying away from MLB 2006 because of the Sammy clip. :lol

I'm getting MVP 2005 instead. I hope the PSP version has all these stance features and everything included from the console version, as my plan is to buy MLB for PSP for baseball gaming on the go. :D

another cool thing about the psp version is when you are batting, you can see the entire infield... including your baserunners. no more pip's popping up on the sides of the screen to show your runners on 1st and 3rd base.

psp mlb is also supposed to support wi-fi play right from the start.

maybe i'll find ya online on launch day, and i'll even let you have sammy on the cubs if you want.

don't laugh but... i got the pirates.

Ok I'm getting a bit confused here! :lol

When you say no franchise on either do you mean MLB on PSP & PS2 or MLB and MVP on PSP?

MLB 2006 on PS2 has a franchise mode.

Don't know why it couldn't be added to the PSP version. If true and no franchise mode I'm going to have to skip the game. In this day and age releasing a sports game without a franchise mode is ridiculous.

I've heard neither on PSP. On PS2 MVP has a good one like last year (hopefully with fixed progression) and MLB supposedly has one of the best ever made, with baseball RPG mode :)

The PSP news (or rumor if you like) has somewhat changed my whole initial desire for the machine...no joke.

Well that is too bad.

This is why I don't think PSP games should be priced at PS2 level right now. They don't seem to include all the options of the console counterparts.

Although it doesn't make sense the PSP version does not include the franchise mode from the PS2 version. Space isn't a concern (32mb pro duo vs 8mb ps2 card) and the game is based off the PS2 version so I don't know what gives.

Could EA technically make a baseball game next year and let it be published by Sony, MS, or Nintendo?

Just food for thought.

This has been discussed already. The answer is no, there is some language in the contract that precludes EA from doing this.

I just read an interview with a developer on MVP PSP. The minor league teams supposedly are there, but franchise isn't because "it's a different sort of gaming experience". Guess what? Wrong choice.

What? :lol Different sort of experience? :lol That is one of the dumbest responses I have read.

No franchise on handheld baseball sucks dong.

Here's an impression sheet from today on the 3 different games pre-ship beta:

MLB 2005 (Sega) - Awesome, much improved.

MLB 2006 (Sony) - Possibly the best, much much better.

MVP 2005 (EA) - Getting Lazy.

Hmm, based on this article and a few other early impressions, I'm beginning to think MVP isn't going to be much of an upgrade over last year. While it seems like MLB 2K5 & MLB 2006 have made major strides. I loved MVP last year, but if it's just a patch I think I'll pass.

I think that EA didn't need to fix too much, if they got the progession corrected and the left handed bug fixed. And tightened up the gameplay a little bit more. And on top of that add single A ball into the mix. Then they have the best baseball arcade/sim on the market.

Unlike MLB, which had to make major strides not to be laughed off of the market.

MLB still had the best baseball engine, as far as accuracy. Yea, laugh because it looked like dog shit and was boring, but if you wanted a sim it's all you really had. If they can make their game look better with better features and MVP fixes those awful bugs we'll have two of the best games ever. Not to mention MLB 2006 sounds fucking great.

Amen... If EA fixes the progression... I won't care who is making MLB games next year! hahah I might not need to buy one for 2 or 3 years.. (I say that now...but will most likely break down and buy whatever next next time)

Damn MLB 2006 looks hot...oh noes what should I buy :(
