MLB Off-season Thread 2015-2016 IOTI Back to the Future was a lie

I think Harper could win that fight pretty easily. Then again, I wouldn't put it past Papelbon to be a dirty fighter.

Yeah, sounds like it was just gambling in a casino overseas too, which is apparently illegal in South Korea

Yeah. He admitted to a one time instance of betting significant sums in a casino (I believe in Malaysia). One complicating factor is that it wasn't his money, he was apparently betting with the money of a shady/mob type character. Apparently there are some prominent KBO match fixing scandals tied to guys falling into debt to organized crime, so that compounds the fact that it's already illegal. Essentially same worry for NPB (Giants got rocked this year by a scandal where some farm players were in debt for illegal gambling - no match fixing but still black eye for club), so his existing team cut all negotiations (largely a formality since Oh was still negotiating with MLB at the time).

Speculation recently was, if MLB didn't work, whether KBO would allow him to play given his cooperation & admission.

Glad it's worked out for him. Kinda funny that, even though I watch more full NPB games than MLB, I'll see him pitch way more now since he's in the division whereas I only saw him pitch a time or two before since the backwards Central League doesn't have an online streaming site.

Exhaustive list of Japanese pitchers who pitched better in NPB than Maeda before coming to MLB:

Hideo Nomo
Yu Darvish
Masahiro Tanaka

also re NPB pitchers - comparing the Cardinals acquisition of Oh to the Rangers acquisition of Barnette (a pitcher I really, really like and who's spent his pro career in Japan - he describes himself as a Japanese pitcher w/o a Japanese name):

2015:

Barnette - 2.59 FIP, 2.73 BB/9, 0.14 HR/9, 15.29 RSAA
Oh - 3.12 FIP, 2.08 BB/9, 0.78 HR/9, 6.98 RSAA

Both had 41 saves (tie for first) and both obviously had good seasons but I am really bullish on Barnette & think it's a great pickup for the Rangers. He could crash and burn but I hope he does well.

how long before the angels sign Cespesdes or Upton to a 10 year 250 million dollar contract?

So Mo was interviewed yesterday regarding Correa, and shed a little light (not much) on the situation. He says that "no one" within his immediate circle was aware that this was going on, and that, as far as he can tell, Correa acted alone. He couldn't go much into it, since the investigation is still ongoing, even though Correa has plead guilty to the charges.

I love my Cards, but I think Manfred needs to set an example here. I'm not sure what the punishment will be, or should be, but it needs to be something to deter others in scouting to not follow the same path. Or if they are, and just haven't been caught yet, to deter them from continuing.

he would say that no matter what.

Of course he would. I would think if Correa plead guilty, and was given the choice to burn the bridges, and take the whole thing down to lighten the sentence, he would.

So who knows, maybe there's more coming out about this.

The #Dodgers officially announce that they have hired former #BlueJays GM Alex Anthopoulos as vice president, baseball operations.

The deterrence for others in scouting is that Chris Correa is going to spend a long time in jail because of what he did.

(Nothing will happen except a fine. Going to bet Luhnow doesn't want this to be a bigger deal than it is.)

Marlins have signed Chris Johnson. Nobody knows if it's a major league or minor league deal.

The Indians are on the hook for Johnson's remaining salary: $7.5 million in 2016, $9 million in 2017.

I disagree... Fine + Draft picks... yeah plural... it is a big deal.

Contract also has a 4th year $12M option / $1.5M buyout

Feel pretty good about this deal. He is a fly ball pitcher and should have a solid couple of years in Marlins Park.

I really thought the Marlins weren't going to sign anyone this year. I wonder if Mattingly had some influence in this or not.

Edit: LOL we also signed Chris Johnson. Going to be real awkward between him and Jose.

It is a big deal, that's why Correa is going to jail.

Employers aren't legally responsible for the ilegal actions of their employees (if they had no knowledge of it).

Look at the history of punishment in MLB. It's not the NFL. They're hardly ever more than a fine.

Crazy how that's not a thing already.

Seems bizarre to force teams to carry a specific Spanish language translator when plenty of coaches can easily handle the job.

If MLB wants to mandate a Spanish language translator in each clubhouse they should foot the damn bill.

Is this snipped from your longer diatribe about why you shouldn't have to press numero dos for español?

It's more an argument against unfunded mandates and the likelihood that it will cost some Latin American coaches opportunities. One of the main reasons the Brewers cited hiring Carlos Subero to coach first base is that he has done translation work for Spanish speaking broadcasts.

Not every team is the rich ass Yankees, BigAT! That's $80k the Brewers will have to pay a translator has to come from somewhere!

If it's creating that many opportunities there wouldn't be a need for a mandate. Also lol at the idea that latin american coaches have to bring translation to the table to get a job.

ESPN changes

Boone and Mendoza are on Sunday Night Baseball
Schilling moved to Monday Night
Kruk moved to studio

Outstanding. Mendoza is great, and now I can finally watch Sunday night without my intelligence being insulted and assaulted as it has been since Joe Morgan first took the Sunday night mic.

FINALLY.

Boone is terrible but better than Schilling by a mile, so net positive. Kruk being essentially erased from existence for me is great as well.
