Pablo Sandoval named in sexual assault complaint:

Stockton -- Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was interviewed by sheriff's deputies in connection with an alleged sexual assault at a hotel near Santa Cruz after a woman named him as the suspect in a complaint, authorities said Saturday.

Lt. Fred Plageman of the Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Sandoval was questioned at the oceanfront Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos early Friday and cooperated with authorities. He was not arrested or detained.

Eric Geffon, Sandoval's attorney, called the incident a "consensual, personal relationship of a sexual nature" in a statement. "Pablo fully cooperated with the Sheriff's Department," Geffon said. "We have no further comment at this time."

According to deputies, the unnamed woman met a small group of people that included Sandoval in downtown Santa Cruz on Thursday night and went with them to the Aptos resort, where the alleged assault occurred.

The woman filed the complaint at 4:25 a.m. Friday. Deputies said Sandoval was questioned by detectives at the resort and later at the sheriff's office, with his attorneys present.

On Saturday, the 25-year-old third baseman, who is currently on the disabled list after hand surgery, referred questions about the incident to his attorney.

Sandoval was in the starting lineup in Stockton on Saturday night as he began his rehab assignment with Class-A San Jose. Asked before the game whether he was worried about the fans' reaction, he just shook his head.

"Innocent until proven guilty," Terry Reddick, 39, of Stockton said before the game. "But looking at him, he doesn't seem too concerned, like a guilty guy would be."

There was a smattering of boos mixed with the cheers when Sandoval came to bat for the first time against the Ports, an A's farm club. Batting third as designated hitter, he was quickly thrown out on a first-pitch comebacker.

Giants officials also declined to address Sandoval's potential legal problems. "Given the off-field nature of the issue, we refer all comments to his attorney," said Staci Slaughter, a team spokeswoman.

Sheriff's spokeswoman April Skalland said that investigators had interviewed a number of people and that the inquiry was continuing.
