I completely understand the desire for variety (Assuming your favored team is already out of it). It's the reverse of the situation that Pittsburgh found themselves in; because they've struggled for so long, people were particularly likely to root for them.

The Cardinals have had an extremely long streak of strength; back to 2001, they've made the playoffs 9 times, made the world series 3 times, and won it 2 times. More than their "fair share."

They're the mini-Yankees. Love em or hate em.

It's funny; I grew up in Saint Louis and lived in NYC for about 8 years (college + work), so my home teams have been the Cardinals and Yankees. I have been told in no uncertain terms that this is basically cheating; I cover nearly 33% of all World Series wins.
