MLB Regular Season 2013 |OT2| - Revenge of the Umpires

You have to add Will Middlebrooks to the list. This is the guy that played so well last year that it compelled the front office to trade one of their most beloved players in Youkilis. Now he's in the minors.

Burn.

Yeah hes been terrible.

He always has a bad season after a good one for whatever reason. I was saying they should have traded him right after they traded Shields. If Shields was good enough to get Myers then what would have Price have gotten coming off that season.

But hes been even worse than I was expecting. Hopefully he comes back healthy within the next few weeks so he builds enough value to be traded before the deadline.

The Dodgers are "on blitzkrieg" to acquire Ricky Nolasco from the Marlins, tweets Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. As noted by Schulman, the matchup makes sense. The Dodgers can easily absorb the remaining $6MM or so on Nolasco's contract, and such a deal would prevent division rivals like the Padres and Giants from landing Nolasco.

The Padres, Giants and Rockies have all been connected to Nolasco at various points thus far, so it would be logical for the Dodgers, who also have the most ground to make up in the division, to pursue the 30-year-old.

Nolasco has a 3.68 ERA with 6.9 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, and a 41.6 percent ground-ball rate in 100 1/3 innings this year. He's slated to be a free agent following the season, which makes him a strict rental for the Dodgers, as teams can no longer receive compensatory draft picks for players who were acquired midseason.

Schulman adds that a deal could happen "soon," which meshes with reports from earlier today that the Fish are trying to move Nolasco ASAP.

Hey how does the NL Central have the three best records in baseball? Are the teams actually the strongest, or is this something to do with scheduling and the strength of their opponents?

SOS is middle of the pack to a little below that for all three teams. All three have pretty good pitching and the Cards/Reds are good hitting teams.

The Mets announced, via Twitter, that they have traded Collin Cowgill to the Angels in exchange for minor league outfielder Kyle Johnson. Angels director of communications Eric Kay tweets that Cowgill has been optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake and adds that Ryan Madson was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster.

Cowgill, 27, has a .173/.189/.327 slash line in 53 plate appearances for the Mets this season, though he's career .307/.381/.476 hitter in 885 Triple-A plate appearances. The Mets designated him for assignment last week after they acquired Eric Young Jr. from the Rockies.

Johnson, 23, was the Angels' 25th round pick in last year's draft. The Washington State product is hitting .310/.414/.424 with two homers and 30 stolen bases in 297 plate appearances for Class A Burlington. He did not rank among the Angels' Top 30 prospects, according to Baseball America. Yesterday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that the Mets unsuccessfully attempted to trade Cowgill to the Angels in exchange for Triple-A right-hander Matt Shoemaker.
Traded Cowgill for a warm body. The Sandy Trio has been cleaning up on deals recently.
