Wow, what a sick series of fights to end the year.

By the way, saw gsp get out of a truck and walk into my work building today. He was doing some promos with Rogers Sportsnet. Diaz was supposed to be there but no-showed, ducking already :)

Werdum didn't do anything on the feet either. Every strike he threw was for the purpose of getting the fight to the ground. The guy was no more interested in standing than Reem was in being in Fabricio's guard and I can't exactly blame either guy for it.

Both guys had a gameplan and stuck to it. I would care more if Overeem had a history of fighting that way but he doesn't so I just chalk it up as an odd performance from a guy nursing multiple injuries.

He wasn't doing a whole hell of a lot when they were both on their feet either. It's not like he put in a dominant performance standing up and Werdum was trying to goto the ground every 20 seconds.
This. It's like he just wanted to keep trolling Werdum, it was great the 1st round but I wanted him to go for a finish.

Fair enough. What injuries did he have at the time?

I think refusing to enter the only realm where Werdum can win is pretty simple strategy. Why play his game? It's the same reason Werdum flopped or tried to pull guard every chance he got.

Damn, Zuffa has a ridiculous amount of cards left in 2011, with some big, big gaps to fill. ELEVEN events left in the year for UFC!

12/30/2011 UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem MGM Grand Garden Arena,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

12/10/2011 UFC 140 - TBA Air Canada Centre,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

12/3/2011 UFC - The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale The Pearl at the Palms,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

11/19/2011 UFC 139 - TBA HP Pavillion,
San Jose, California, United States

11/12/2011 UFC - UFC on Fox 1 Honda Center,
Anaheim, California, United States

11/5/2011 UFC 138 - Leben vs. Munoz National Indoor Arena,
Birmingham, West Midlands, England

10/29/2011 UFC 137 - St. Pierre vs. Diaz Mandalay Bay Events Center,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

10/8/2011 UFC 136 - Edgar vs. Maynard 3 Toyota Center,
Houston, Texas, United States

10/1/2011 UFC Live 6 - Cruz vs. Johnson Verizon Center,
Washington, D.C., United States

9/24/2011 UFC 135 - Jones vs. Rampage Pepsi Center,
Denver, Colorado, United States

9/17/2011 UFC - Fight Night 25 Ernest N. Morial Convention Center,
New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Big gaps on UFC 139 and 140 to fill. And UFC 138 is one of those weak England events.

Throw in another four for Strikeforce:

12/17/2011 Strikeforce - Melendez vs. Masvidal TBA
11/18/2011 Strikeforce - Challengers 20 Palms Casino Resort,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
9/23/2011 Strikeforce - Challengers 19 Palms Casino Resort,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
9/10/2011 Strikeforce - Barnett vs. Kharitonov U.S. Bank Arena,
Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

OK, challengers is no big deal, but they'll either have another event before the end of the year or put the heavyweight tourney finals on the 12/17 Melendez card.

Lots and lots of slots to fill.

Quoted for the new page
Holy hell that's a bunch of events! And here I thought 2011 was gonna slowly plod into the new year...

I dunno how they expect Joe Schmoe to keep up with the UFC and spend $300+ to watch all this shit. I guess they're trying to pump up the numbers after a down year?

Hell what am I saying, TAKE MY MONEY!

Basically you'll see a lot of the guys who fought on 133 and Rio back in the ring. Machida/Davis, Tito/Franklin and Vitor/someone are obvious co-main events. I still think Shogun/Hendo will main event Toronto. Don't see another main event caliber fight that's possible.

Wouldn't want to be Joe Silva but I think they'll pull together some solid cards.

its time to officially change the name of the sport from MMA to UFC..

I don't get this argument. The MLB is still baseball. The UFC will always be mixed martial arts. It's a league, not a sport. There will always be other leagues. Is UFC the "major leagues" right now? Yes.

Overeem was he striker, and when he was on his feet he didn't strike or try to do anything. He looked slow, lethargic, and tired. At least Werdum attempted to do what he knows best: taking it to the ground. Overeem fought like shit, and it's his own fault he did. Nothing prevented him while they were standing to try to take the fight to him, but he didn't.

Why? Did it make your pants tight? It's cool bro.

;)

Edit: Not having the King Of Personality in the OP is a shame. No other fighter would dare take that picture.

oh my god.

Fedor vs. Monson is on the same day as Cain vs. JDS

nobody's gonna watch Fedor fight that can. This is about as hilarious to me as the 3DS add-on debacle.

Wal-Mart has them. The Boxer briefs fit nicely. I wear them when I know I am going to get some. Let the girls know what is coming.

Much respect to Overeem for taking such a difficult fight. I didn't think he had it in him, but I'm glad to see he's not content with just crushing cans in Nihon.

And I didn't even know Freddy was fighting Snowman.

Snowman by arm triangle.

Thing is, the Reem was offered the next title shot against the winner of Cain vs. JDS but he didn't want to wait that long. His original plan was for his next fight to be in October or November and this would have kept him out of action until about March. So the Lesnar fight was offered.

Brock has some fucking BALLS taking this fight. I don't want to come across anyone saying Brock doesn't have any heart anymore because the dude has it in spades. Brock could have easily taken a comeback fight against someone like Roy Nelson or even a Mir rematch and no one would have complained. Instead, he takes a fight with the best HW striker in MMA who isn't much of a slouch on the ground either. The Reem is a stylistic nightmare for Brock Lesnar. Brock has agreed to take the fight that Fedor Emilianenko ran away from more than once, and is doing so while coming back from a 2nd bout with diverticulitis.

Brock Lesnar has more heart than Fedor Emilianenko. U mad, Fedor fans?

Dana would break Twitter all on his own.

Who has ever said that Brock lacks heart? Like, do people actually make that claim? Even after he got his ass beat by Steroid Shane and not only answered the bell for round 2 but quickly tapped the juicer out?

PS: Overeem is also taking the fight Freddy declined. Both men are showing what a coward Freddy Lenko truly was.

How is being on the same side of the bracket in the Strikeforce tournament "running away" from Overeem? He probably would've got his ass handed to him, but still, you're reaching here.

I don't know if he lacks heart, but he definitely does not like to get hit. One good shot and he goes into retreat mode. I think Reem should take that fight with relative ease as long as he keeps his distance

THAT is Brock's problem - especially if the reports of his training partners being prohibited from hitting him in the face during sparring sessions are true.

please no brock/reem injuries delaying the fight

I'm really nervous about injuries affecting the onslaught of awesome fights that we have lined up. Hoping everything goes according to plan.

I'm talking prior to the GP. Reem called out Fedor and they turned him down in favor of Werdum, which is why we had Brett Rogers, a guy who was coming off a loss to Fedor, getting a title shot. Reem called out Fedor in the cage in his post-fight interview right after tossing Rogers around like a rag doll. Werdum shocked the world and beat Fedor but also sustained an injury and would be out for quite a long time. Reem called out Fedor yet again and was declined. Reem then said fuck this shit and signed on to the K-1 2010 World Grand Prix. Fedor's people of course have ties with FEG and found out the moment the deal was done, and decided to THEN call out the Reem on Facebook knowing full well that this K-1 deal was already signed. Never mind that Fedor didn't want to fight Strikeforce's HW champ from the get go on CBS preferring to fight Rogers instead.

All of this happened before the HWGP was even conceived.

PLEASE tell me how I'm reaching. Fedor clearly ducked The Reem twice during his Strikeforce stint.

Yeah, I kind of always thought everyone agreed that Freddy, at the very least least, directly sidestepped Overeem's challenge.

I'm not denying any of this is true. I'm saying he could've easily taken the soft side of the bracket if he was ducking Overeem. The bracket was designed as a title eliminator, but they ended up not having title fights in the bracket. He was heading straight for Overeem, not "running away" from him. Would you agree?

M-1's weird like that. Dave Meltzer used to tell a story about M-1 asking Zuffa to write Tim Sylvia into Freddy's contract as someone he wouldn't have to fight, then they turn around and fight Timmy anyway.

Yeah...who do you really think was afraid of Overeem, M-1 Global or Fedor? It's a fucking shame what his career has become.

I don't know sien. The papers Affliction filed in their lawsuit certainly indicated that Freddy has some control of M-1 Global and you would think that he could steer and influence the decisions they make. But they're also crazy Russians so who really knows.

All I know is taking a fight against Snowman (is this confirmed?) is kind of sad. What comes after that? Freddy Lenko vs Ricco Suave Rodriguez?

I still contend he fought the best available fighters outside of the UFC after Pride died. That said, he should've still eventually gone to the UFC.

I know he needs to get back on the horse after a 3 fight skid, but fighting Jeff Monson is laughable.

Consider this though:

Freddy could have fought Randy Couture to unify the PRIDE and UFC titles.
Freddy could have fought Brock Lesnar for the UFC title and the "biggest contract in UFC history."
Freddy could have fought Alistair Overeem for the Strikeforce title.

It's hard to deny that there's a pattern here...

I would've loved to have seen all 3 of these. Fedor became a marionette in M-1 Global's poorly orchestrated plans to make it big time and it fucking sucks. His legacy is already chiseled in stone, but they're doing their damnedest to tarnish it with all this backroom negotiation bullshit.

Who can Fedor even fight at heavyweight outside of the Zuffa banner? Not much comes to mind.

I'll be honest, I'd pay $65 for Freddy Lenko vs Kimbo Slice.

Infinitely better than fighting Monson.

All of those shitty fights we booked in the old thread seem closer to reality than ever before.

There's literally no fight outside of Zuffa that will satiate Fedor haters. To give you an idea, the highest ranked guy is Pedro Rizzo. They'll be banging the same drum until he retires.

M-1 has always said that they always act on what Fedor wants. If M-1 wasn't acting in Fedor's interest he could have dropped them. You can't just blame M-1 and leave Fedor in the clear.

I am not a Fedor "hater", I just hate what he did to his career and am fully aware of the limited options outside of Zuffa for him. He should have come to the UFC when he had the chance, the whole landscape of the UFC's HW division would have been different than it is now.

I simply think it's hilarious that his career has come to fighting Jeff Monson.

If you take M-1's word for things I don't know what to tell you. He probably thinks Vadim is acting in his best interest to this very day. They're supposedly close friends.
