Pretty interesting to see how they all are doing. It looks like WoW is about to be the #1 MMORPG if it hasnt already passed L2. I thought it was pretty interesting that FFXI is actually more popular now than it's ever been.

Well I think it has to do with perception. The FFXI hate on GAF is largely unwarranted, it's a good game and it rewards hard work over instant gratification, which isn't everyone's cup of tea but IMHO is closer to the spirit of an adventure title than most of the other games.

Yeah that's probably it. It also interesting to see that most other MMORPGs actually lost marketshare around the time of WoW but FFXI kept going up.

But the best part is EQ2. :lol Blizzard came in and showed them how it was done.

I was about to get all up in your grill over this... but stepping back and thinking about MMO titles in general, you're about right.

Just the general nature of MMOs are complete suck, and FFXI emphasizes some of the best and worst traits of the genre.

Well the logic is, if all the EQ fans transfered to EQ2 and you factor for the continuing growth of the MMO market with faster and faster internet connections coming to homes all around the world...
that EQ2 would have a larger market share than it currently has.

In otherwords, WoW pwned EQ2 by stealing a good chunk of its customers.

Well one would think the Everquest name would have a little bit of clout in the MMORPG market and that a sequel to one of the most popular MMORPGs of its time would at least capture over 5% of the MMO marketshare.
 
Hell all of SOE's games COMBINED don't even match WoW and they are supposed to be an MMO company. :lol

(and this EXCLUDES the 1.5 million in China) :O :O
 
Those stats do not reflect the suppopsed 1.5 million subscribers WOW got from China.. there was an announcement a while back..

I played FFXI for a year, ran one of the most succesful USA guilds and the game was great. The reason it was popular was two fold. First, there was not much else to choose from after EQ, and also, most of the USA players played on the Misgardsormr server. This led to a great sense of community and most of us knew each other. It was great and i would not trade my experiences in the game for anything. We were the first USA guild to kill most of the HNMs in the game, and it was intoxicating.

That being said, it is a mistake for Square to release it on Xbox360, the game is 2 generations ago it is time to let it go, not to mention Square had a very bad habit of favoring the JP players.. consideirng Xbox360 will, at least in the beginning, be a bigger sell in the US, if they stilll subscribe to this faforitism, they will loose even more gamers.

As of that date EQ2 hadn't had it's official Asian release yet. Since Square-Enix is publishing it in Japan I want to see how the numbers change when it has a a SE tag behind it. I won't beat WoW, but we all know an asian (at least a chinese and korean) release significatnly helps an MMO's numbers. A japanese one usually doens't, but this is only the 2nd time an MMO has relased in Japan with the Square-Enix namesake on it.

Trust me, at launch, I'd say a good 80-90% of US were on midgard. They have opened up new servers since.
 
FFXI's lack of pvp probably turned off alot of people/guilds. The game was cool, and had nice graphics, cool spells etc etc, but it could get pretty boring when compared to WoW or even DAOC, wasnt much worse than Lineage 2 tho. Overall ALL MMORPGS these days are better than they used to be WoW right now has MOST of the basic elements covered the best though. Quests, zones, distinct art style, great music, skills, every class can do SOMETHING. gone are the days of DAOC's "hey guys im a sorcerer can i join your group?" " yeah sure just sit there man these two cabalists are gonna kill that whole spawn of pygmy goblins, we'll tell you if we need a mezz". DAOC did have the best pvp SERVER in the form of Mordred of any MMORPG that was just a harsh lesson there, great fun if you stuck it out and got a guild, Lineage 2 excelled at this also and even made you the hunted if you got brave nice touch. Wow's pvp is dissappointing not on all servers, the pve servers should be happy thats what they wanted pvp when they want it *aka when i have all the uber gear* queues are weaksauce though. The PVP servers are just neutered because blizz wont change the ruleset everyone wants open pvp / cross faction guild servers. I can walk around all day on Gorefiend and no one is even out and about everyones in WSG or AV for pvp, arghh, everyone should be running around looking for trouble AND finding it goin to town fuckin up peoples lives constant conflict with other people! I cant blame the people though, theres no death penalty for dying in pvp , in the very least it should be monetary, if you get killed you should feel some sort of loss.

Agreed. If they simplifiy certain aspects of the game a bit more, elimate some of the timesinks, add some more PvP and new classes... shit it'll get even more popular.

Runescape gained 200'000 subscribers between October 04 and April 05, and their number of players is increasing all the time it seems. It's probably around 400k by now. Pretty impressive for a Java game.

You can do all FFXi has to offer in 8-9 months or a yera if you arent that great at it. After that it is rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat. That is why alot of the original players do not play anymore. Plus the fact a whole new generation of MMOs are emerging. Personally i will join the MMO fold once again as soon the the Vanguard Saga Of Heroes beta starts. That game is going to be great.

And the reason WoW has such mass appeal is because it is, in essence, like "My First MMO". You don't need to have much, if any MMO experince to play the game, so it appeals to a broader base. Im not saying it is the only reason, but it helps. I also know alot of the top guilds in WoW who i speak with have already done everything there is to do.

You sort of ignored my reply. You mentioned things in terms of JP favortism and such. Due to recent changes in the system, it's certainly not this way anymore. NA's are doing more things now as well. Plus, I HIGHLY doubt you can do "all FFXI has to offer" in 9 months. That's why I still play, and I am an original player. =) Besides, couldn't this be said of ANY MMO? Can do everything is has to offer in 9 months?

It doesnt suck away your time, it doesnt require a ton of MMORPG skill / knowledge, it helps you out whenever it can and its a game first, an "MMORPG" second. And because of this is the reason why even new MMOs like Vanguard and whatever else will not even touch WoW's marketshare. WoW will keep a huge majority of its fanbase while the hardcore MMORPGers will continue to hop from MMO to MMO bitching and moaning along the way.

Exactly.
Simple yet complex.
20 minutes or 20 hours in.
FUN.

Plus it's really close to a real Diablo 3 game and you can't do wrong with a Diablo game.
 
Wow, Star Wars Galaxies as of July only had 250,000 subscribers? I'm kind of not suprised to hear that since I hear a lot of people left because almost everyone can be a Jedi with a little grinding and the combat upgrade.

If you say it has changed ill have to take your word on it, most players i still talk to say the JP still get the HNMs due to the latency and still get favored by GMs.

Yes, the hardcore MMO players like myself like to be challeneged ridiculously liike back in EQ where some mobs were literally considered unbeatable - until we beat them that is. :) Personally if i am playign an MMO, i have no problems learning or teachign specific aspects of that game, but when i have to teach a party member tank that his job is to keep the mobs off the mages or tell the combat mages to watch the nuking because its hard to keep the mobs of them if they chain nuke, and when i have to do it everyday, it becomes a nuscience at best.
 
Bah that kind of stuff doesnt even come into play for the first 44 levels, You really dont have to go thru instances doing the formulaic technique of tank healing nuking in WoW. I blew thru just about every instance in the game till Zul Farak just beating ass, kill everything, no real need to worry bout aggro. It was actually fun ,well more fun than the usual im a tank let me get aggro BS as a mmorpg players of 4 years i can let that go personally. Thats one of the awesome parts of this game, shit wanna do an instance 2 druids a hunter rogue and paladin sheit ok, 2 hunters a rogue a warrior and a druid hey whatever. Swap in a mage , warlock whatever in there and its still possible. I think thats great because it didnt exclude classes atleast in the first 40 levels unless you had elite dickheads that didnt do an instance without 2 healers 2 tanks and a mage.
 
Well, I'm glad to see that FFXI is still doing great. It will never reach WoW levels of subscription rate, but out of all the "lesser" MMOs on that chart, its doing the best, and its continuing to draw new players. Its enough to keep the game alive, and that makes me happy.

That's definitely changing. There's no more stalling of the Jeuno/King HNMs otherwise you WILL die (they will go into Super Saiya-jin mode past a certain time then WAX anything in their way. Ever seen a 7k Spike Flail? =D), the claiming system has been tweaked a bit, etc. It's a pretty level playing field.

He wont spike flail if you stand in the correct spot.. we held it once for 13 hours to bring it back to usa time.. i know they instituted a 24 hour zone policy where u have to cycles zones but i havent heard about this super mode.

It is alwasy the tanks job to take damage i dont care if you are level 10 or lvl 60.. certain classes have certain jobs, the party may work without doing it correctly, but it will work better when it IS done correctly. I guess thats why i perfer the hardcore sect of MMO playing, im very methodical, cant stand those parties who go around dying and laughing all the time. Gets under my skin.

I know he won't spike flail if you stand at the right spot... Well, you're pretty out of the loop on a lot of things now anyways. Check out some of the new patch notes on the official site sometime. But how about a little screenshot for some fun?

The average server post PC launch was handling anywhere from 3000-5000 people at any given time so unless FFXI only happened to sell 7000-9000 copies, your numbers are totally off. Also, only 3 servers have been opened in the last 2 years to alleviate server congestion since launch as I recall (Remora, Hades, and I think it was Asura but I really can't recall for sure).

I've heard starting it starts after an hour for most HNMs that are affected by this but I haven't gotten any solid numbers.

Youch. Most of my fights with Nidhogg while I was still playing would've gone over that limit. And we were the best NA LS on the server. And those fights were started prepared!

I guess what it does is force you to have everyone there before you start fighting, instead of letting a few people hold with some select jobs.

The Kings probably have a higher time limit. ThoseGuys, which is now one of the more prolific linkshells on Fairy, takes Nidhogg out in about 90 minutes I think so it probably is a bit longer for those Kings.

Incorrect =) The limit for KB, Nid, and Aspid, as well as their NQ versions is exactly one hour. The jueno HNMs are 20 minutes. Thoseguys destroys Nid in under 30 minutes.

lol true, but was before the patch with /blockaid too =P 30minutes is the norm for them nowadays. I don't go since as a MNK, not much for me to do sans some weak support. If I chi blasted, it would steal hate from most tanks anyways, so meh.
