Mobile gaming: Am I just missing out?

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
It's been a rage in Japan for awhile now, and I am seeing lots of mobile game reviews go up on sites like Gamespot or IGN, but why don't I give a fuck? Looking beyond weak aesthetics, this subset of gaming is starting to garner a modicum of respect, and all the jazzed up cellphones make it their bizness to deliver enough power to handle a slipshod rendition of Splinter Cell.

As big a gamer as I am, and as often as I use a cellphone, you'd think I would do more than play some freebie bowling game 2 minutes a year on my cell. But that is the reality. I'm more interested in finding some polyphonic Ms. Pac-man theme-song than ACTUALLY playing Ms. Pacman.

Do any of you actually mobile game?

fuck disregard. are you talking about mobile CELLPHONE gaming? UGH.

It's still too early, but it's going to get big.

EA will have 15-20 mobile games in the next fiscal year. Ubisoft will have 10 or so. Activison another 10 or so.

I was recently playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow on my phone, and it's actually really good. It surpised me what can be done in java.

Give 2D N-Gage games a try, as they will be slightly better than the very best cell phone games out there. If you don't like those, mobile gaming has little to offer beyond Tetris or Pac-Man.

It's all the rage in Japan because their distribution system is much better than that of NA. I've never really had a reason to care for cellphone games though. I've played demos of various mobile games on my cellphone, and most of them, although entertaining for about 15 mintues, just weren't worth the money. If there was some kind of subscription service where I paid X amount of dollars a month, and I could download a certain groups games as much as I wanted, then it would be fine.

I find it impossible to control, the pads are WAY too small and inaccurate. I can never see myself adapting to mobile gaming; if I really need to play a game on the go, then I'll bring my PSP or DS.

I play games on my Treo (PalmOS phone). But not the same games as on consoles and handhelds. I play time-wasters like Solitaire.

I play them a *lot*. But it's while standing in lines, or waiting for somebody, etc. It's not like I sit down to play, or have a game to work through. It's a different kind of gaming altogether.

I think cellphone gaming is a waste of time, but I'm starting to really get into handheld gaming on my DS and my PSP.

With the exception of my recent love affair with Area 51 (I'm the only guy in the world that loves this game), I've found myself playing my handhelds far more than my consoles. And out of the handhelds, I find myself playing the DS in particular far more than the PSP.

I think Nintendo really struck gold with the touchscreen idea. I agree with some posters who say that they probably should have foregone the top screen and just made one larger touch screen, but the whole idea of touch control is great. I love Yoshi and Pac Pix, and I can't wait to get my hands on some of the online-enabled first person shooters. Hell, I'm anticipating Metroid Prime: Hunters more than the new Zelda game for the Gamecube. And then I'm anticipating Animal Crossing to Go! more than Metroid: Hunters.
