Only if the employee worked the registers. Most employees work the floor in one of several departments. "The Walk of Shame" is when a Manager will allow the employee to come in, clock in, and start working the floor before having the employee detained/cuffed and brought to the office.

The better way to do it would be a wait for the employee to show up for their shift and ask to speak to them before they clock in.

No, all the office's are in the front. The clock, break room, bathroom for use, everything.

"The walk of shame is a Target policy to purposely cause shame, embarrassment and emotional distress to any Target employee who is suspected of stealing from Target,'' the suit states. "The policy consists of employees being arrested and paraded in handcuffs through the Target store in full view of co-workers and customers.''

Holy shit!
I am so glad Target is getting out of Canada.

Who in their right mind even suggested this and what room full of people actually agreed?

I was terminated in 2008 for shoplifting, something I fully admit to doing for no reason other than being a depressed 19-year-old. The execs wanted me paraded out just like I had seen them have the cops do at least five-six other employees, but the cop actually suggested taking me out the back way to avoid embarrassment like this poor guy felt. He also gave me tips on what to say on future applications while he was processing me out at the station. Pretty cool guy.

RIP to the deceased.

Employees also steal as "payback" for shitty pay or policies.

Seriously, pay employees a decent wage, give them respect, expect respect in return.
Plus, if someone is still stealing, other employees, in said case, would be far more likely to alert someone.

I worked at Winners (TJMAX) and when employees are caught stealing (usually they have people watching the cameras after they have been accused) police are called and they are arrested for shoplifting. I mean there is no parade but if shoplifting is a crime and you commit it i suppose you are supposed to be arrested.

The most fucked up part is they say "suspected" as opposed to proven. So if they think you did some shit you could be subjected to this kind of thing.

Geez, we don't like to make a scene at Walmart. Some people actually might feel it as a badge of honor to be paraded around, or maybe they'll sue better keep it safe and keep it quiet. Employee theft is hush hush, don't talk or even think about it. The offending associate is quietly pulled into the office and terminated/arrested.

According to the complaint, police and store security met Graham Gentles immediately as he arrived for work. At the direction of two members of the store management, he was handcuffed and led before other store employees to an office, the suit states...He was questioned in the office, then later taken to the police station, the suit states.

It sounds to me like he was simply escorted in handcuffs to a back office and then escorted back out again. The complaint is clearly characterizing the event in the most negative terms possible, to support the claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress, but I think they'll have a hard time proving their case, if Target just walked him to an office and then out again.

I'm gonna that Target probably doesn't have this policy...But they had a manager that was a dick, and maybe other store managers do thus as well. Either way Target needs to get its shit together if all that is claimed is true.

wait... so are Target's employee areas at the front while Walmart's are at the back? that could be the difference in apparent parading if the front entrance by all he cashiers is legitimately a shorter route than the rear exit... either way, they have to know where their employees live right!?

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.

I could swear that most Target's I've been in have all the offices (including LP) up in the front of the store.. by the entrance. I don't think I've ever been in one where they were in the back.

The place I work doesn't work with them anymore so I'm not sure if newer stores are different.. but they were always up front.

Depends on the store. The one I worked at the employee break room and HR/etc. was "upstairs" where management and HR were able to look outside those interrogation "one-way glass" style windows. While the "lower floor" was the retail store proper. This was at the main entrance of the store where the "food court," registers, and return stations were. So I don't see why they would need to "walk of shame" someone if most stores have their management on an upper level near the front or just in offices at the front of the store. Grab the person as they come in through the front.

Yes, at the target I've worked at, and a few I visited it's always in the front.

It's that grey area that I made a circle around. That's where the break room, clock, manager and Loss prevention is at.

high risk stores are common in my district and were 'neighbors' to this store. never heard of this tactic and my position works with our AP closely. saying its policy of the company isn't true.

team members suspected of stealing require multiple incidents and clear recordings submitted before any action may be taken. bullseye blocks action unless the store possesses enough clear evidence to warrant action. my store has team members who have stolen, but only were 'caught' once and in turn can have no action taken. its common.

any incidents I've known of involving team members usually takes place when they are at work and the local authorities will come in to arrest. common practice, no "walk of shame". its also very rare unless it involves cash theft or embezzlement. a corrective leading to termination is more common yet even than hard to do on leaderships side. target takes team members side more often than not. the only group in the store who can be let go easily with any hint of stealing are contracted team members (photo, mobile, pharmacy, optical).

it sounds like the store had an AP ETL who was out of control and in turn AP members who over stepped their bounds. very sad.

also, AP office is always located next to a store entrance. any incident is visible to the front of the store.
