Monitor recommendations for gaming?

If this thread is against the ToS, I'm sorry, but I couldn't find anything about these threads being prohibited. If that is the case, please lock.

I'm gonna be unemployed when I come home for the summer and my sister's gonna let me borrow her Wii so I can have something to do for three months. Problem is, I sold my TV and all that jazz before moving for school. I'm wondering if you guys have any recommendations for adequate monitors or even cheap televisions that would get me through this summer?

I remember hearing something about one of the ASUS monitors being used for Street Fighter tournaments or something, but I can't find which one specifically.

Any help would be greatly recommended, and again, if I violated the ToS, please lock rather than ending my GAF life prematurely. :(
 
Got a VH242H after recommendations, and I must say it is amazing. It is the only screen I own that doesn't lose contrast when the sun's rays are all over it.

Are there any major discrepancies between the (marginally) larger one over the 23"? Built-in speakers is a necessary requisite as I have all my sound equipment down here and won't have the money to ship it back/bring it with me. All three seem to fall under that category.

One thing I did notice is that these don't seem to have component cables, which I thought was the highest a Wii would go? Any advice in this regard?

Only bad side is the heavy weight. My 19" CRT was a pain to move around. Can't imagine what a 24" will weight.

I noticed that the resolution on all those monitors are 1920x1080. Do PC games not run at higher resolutions, e.g., 1920x1200? If I were to get a 24" monitor, I'd like it to be 1920x1200 resolution rather than 1920x1080.

Yeah I just noticed that he asked for 24"... and speakers. Go with LCD, otherwise the money you save would probably go to medical bills in the future anyway. CRT would be best for Wii gaming though!

Built in speakers on these cheaper LCDs are going to be so godawful you might as well just plug in some headphones.

They support them. 1080p has kind of weaseled its way to being a standard.

When you watch movies they are at 16:9 aspect, I think most companies made the monitors with that in mind for people to watch them with no borders on the top and bottom.

I have a 24" with a 1920x1200 16:10 ratio, love it.

I hate the 1080 resolution even on my work ones with 16:9 ratio and like 20".
 
So far so good as far as input, though that Sony monitor seems obscenely expensive. The reason I'm opting for a monitor is to have something to use temporarily during the summer months until I can afford something more substantial.

Also, my question regarding input into the monitors aforesaid seems to have gone unrecognized, what would you suggest as far as connecting the Wii to this device?

Just order a VGA cable from the net and your good. Not saying it's the greatest thing or anything, but it'll work.

PS: I have an older Asus I got a back in 09 and love it. Cheap, vga/hmdi/dvi, and descent looking considering it was only $150 shipped for my 21.5" from newegg.
 
Just about any Monitor should have a low enough delay time for fighting games if that is what you care about.

Get an LCD or Plasma for HD games, and a CRT for anything else. MAME on a CRT is the only way to do it IMO, LCDs don't handle variable resolutions anywhere near as well.

I think you'll need a VGA adapter then, not much other options than that I think.

I personally have a Iiyama pro-lite, I can't compare the image quality to other monitors but the 2ms response time is nice.

They are also a bit hard to calibrate, I could never find my crt's "sweet spot"

Not true anymore, I've been debating making a thread about this for a few days since I've been surprised that they aren't being talked about, but I guess this is as good a place as any to point out that there's a new IPS Asus monitor available for ~$230 and an LG for ~$260. Surprisingly for such affordable IPS monitors, it's hard to find much information about them, but supposedly the LG uses the same panel as the Dell U2311h.

It'll be interesting to see reviews for them come out. Hopefully more affordable IPS panels come out in the near future, the prevalence of iPhones and Pads with IPS screens is going to increase demand I would think.

I've been waiting around for a couple years. My current CRT is having some real issues and the 120hz models are pissing me off to varying degrees. It's seems like they keep having the input lag levels rise with each success generation and when I finally got excited about the new 27 inch model from Acer finally releasing, and talk myself into the 699.99 price, Digital Versus came out with their review that was pretty terrible.

184.99 for a true 24 inch, 2ms, and low input lag is good enough for my current needs. I'll go 3D later this year with either a projector or plasma.

EDIT: If I screw around for another 6 months, I'm going to get stuck with a garbage LED lighting.
 
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm interested in purchasing a gaming monitor but know nothing about the subject. As the last few posts are from April and we're now in July, what are the current best and affordable monitors (23" or greater for $300 or less)?

I had it and back then widescreen monitors were pretty rare.

Unfortunately through the years it went all blurry and the repair shops all said it was a goner.
 
what is the difference between the VH models and the VE models anyways? Coming from a CRT I would only describe the VE I got as adequate.

Agreed, I want a 16x10 or even a decent size 4x3 LCD and they are hard to find and expensive when you do. Not everyone uses their computers to watch movies so we could care less about 16x9

Yeah, I love my IBM P275 CRT but the flyback transformer is shot and even if you can find a shop that can repair it the parts can't be found. It really sucks for those of us who still want the CRTs.
 
I'm thinking of getting rid of my iMac with 1920x1200 screen. Finding options for 1200p+ screens to be pretty limited, and often pretty ugly! I have a 1600x1200 from almost a decade ago here, it's frustrating that 1080p is a new cap.

I guess 1080p is just such a popular size now you're paying a premium for anything else. :(
 
Dell u2711 here, 27 inches of factory color calibrated glory @ the crispy-ass res of 2560 x 1440.

The downside is you will require a beastly video card to pump games at that res. This monitor has the same panel as the 27" imac's, so far I haven't come across a similarly priced monitor that comes close color-wise.
