Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

Ok, so here's the deal, I've watched the videos read the reviews, etc. and I really, really want to like this game.

But every time I download the demo, I want to have fun, but I just dont. Idk, maybe it's just the clunky controls on PSP. Because the game looks like it would be a lot of fun, if it just controlled smoothly.

So my questions to GAF are:

-Do you think I would enjoy the game more on the PS2?

-Does anyone even play online on the PS2 version anymore?

-Should I just go with Lost planet 2 instead? (I heard the games were similar so I downloaded the LP2 demo and loved it.)

-Should i just stop trying to play Monster Hunter and look for something else?

donno. never played it. that may depend on whether or not you will depend on online
-Does anyone even play online on the PS2 version anymore?
seeing as how the ps2 version is old and relatively obscure, and you need to subscribe to go online.....

i've only played the portable ones, which are on their console counterparts, and 2 made huge improvements to the playability of the game... so i suggest skip monhun 1 on ps2. monhun 2 never get a western console release.

sure, why not.
-Should i just stop trying to play Monster Hunter and look for something else?
sure, why not.

i always say, monhun has a very high learning curve at the beginning. actions are slow and deliberate and punishes you for bad actions. it forces you to learn each monster to survive. i really only got through the early parts with a bit of hand-holding. but once you get it, i find it incredibly satisfying. get it if you have the patience. get it if you can find people to play with. but i'd be hard pressed to recommend it as a purely solo experience. there's a lot of content, but that content is opened up very very very slowly by oneself.

1. No, I dont think you would like the ps2 game, because is basically the same, you just attack with the right analog stick, so, you control the camera with the same d-pad. If you can control the camera, its the same for the PS2.

2. I dont know about the online players on PS2, but some quest are only online. The psp game MHFU let you play all the quests without the need to play online.

3. If you liked Lost planet, then sure, go for it, but I think is pretty diferent from Monster Hunter.

4. If after some time, the game dont *click* on you then is not your type of game... one of the things you must learn to do:

-Gather items and combining them. You will need to make your own potions, buff ups, etc.

- Control the camera with the d-pad at the same time while your move your character. This may be difficult at first, because you *need* to use your index finger to move it so you can focus the camera on your pray.

Something like this:
2zhpe6b.jpg

Focusing the camera on your pray will help a lot to kill them.

-In monster hunter you actually need skill and not only level, (you dont actually level up, you just upgrade your armor) you need to know how a monster attacks and when to attack and when to retreat. Each weapons has unique atttacks so knowing all the attacks or combos for the weapon helps a lot.

Give it a try again, its a wonderful game and very fun to play once you mastered the controls.

I just bounce my thumb from analog to digital to move the camera. It hurts my hand to go into that claw position, which is how I held the machine when Freedom1 came out.

I usually adjust the camera during evades.

Yes, I'm being very careful. Trying to only attack the face. I needed Fang+'s to upgrade Cold Icicle to Frost Icicle. If I'm not careful I'll accidentally kill him lol.

Arrrgh, Dual Tigrex in the guild quests is so frustrating. All the mistakes are always my fault though:lol , need to get better with the hammer and timing my rolls.

I doubt it's any consolation, but it's much easier to solo the quest than it is to do the quest with someone who is worse than useless. I suppose I shouldn't be soloing other people's urgents since I'm just increasing the pool of HR6 players who don't know what they're doing.

Last night I had a G-rank turns room going and saw something I hadn't seen before. There was a guy who wanted to only do his quests and tried to help speed things up by equipping a low rank autotracker armor set, rushing over to the boss, and dying twice. The amazing thing is that he got away with it as many times as he did. I had chalked it up to a lack of skill until someone else pointed out exactly what he was doing.

I am pretty sure they shut the online down for US users on the PS2 version.

Also: IT IS MONSTER HUNTING MONDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Room will be up in J-2 around 9pm est!

Well, I'm slowly but surely making progress as my free time allows, but I fear I've hit my first really hard monster: Yian Kut Ku. Holy crap, this dude is rough!

I started the game using nothing but Longsword for the longest time, but the last few two-star Elder jobs I'd switched to the Hammer, which I'm greatly loving. Then, I switched it up to the dual swords. Fun, but hard to time that opening attack. I assume these are bad bad bad for fighting the Yian Kut Ku because all of my attacks just bounced off! Sometimes I'd draw blood, but rarely. I finally got him down to where he flew off to the beach, but by that time I'd used up all 8 mega potions I had on me, so he killed me in short order.

So, when I try again, I'll probably go back to Hammers and see how they do. Any other advice for this guy?

get used to anticipating his animations. There are clues if you know how to use them. For example, if he does the two quick turns, chances are he will run afterwards. And he always does a full 360 tail swipe (as do many of the later wyverns, such as the rathalos)

Rather than unleashing a full on combo, try and peck at him; go in, hit once or twice, and then get out of there!

In addition to the "oh shit" jump, the simple roll away can be useful, and it actually does have a small amount of invulerability, but it is very quick (like as fast as a parry in SF3 if you are familiar with that). When attacking right up in some dragons face, a quick side roll is often the ONLY way you can avoid damage, depending on the circumstances.

Also, keep your weapon sharp. This is important. damage gets exponentially worse when your weapon gets dull. I keep mine the sharpest all the time, generally.

you can bring a single shock trap, and two trap tools with 2 genprey fangs to mix two more out in the field. these work wonders. flash bombs also are effective.

Most of all, be patient. Every mission lost is a bit of combat knowledge gained. And the behaviours of the Kut-Ku translate into other dragons later on, so that knowledge will be helfpul.

If your on later on MH Mondays, I will help you out :)

Well I actualy find yian kut-ku very easy, tried farming it but when I got all the materials I needed for the armor I just bought the yian garuga set :lol.

If you still use long sword, use the default attack with triangle followed by the "back slash" (whatever its called, triangle + circle attack) if you still need to get further, roll away. Actually this metod work with a lot of monsters, khezu, kut ku, cenotaur. Just dont rush your attacks. Trying to get one more hit will cause your death.

Also you can time his attacks and you can connect another attack after the first slash. Also check if your weapon has green sharpness, my LS have it, and my attacks doesnt rebound againts kut ku, also if using LS still rebound build up the spirit bar, it will decrease the chance to bounce, the spirit bar helps you alot with that matter, I even killed a basarios with it :lol

Thanks for the tips on Yian Kut Ku, I actually took down the bastard right when I got home from work, much to the chagrin of my wife (there was much whooping and hollering on my part!).

The adrenaline spike I got when the bastard started limping was like a tub of hot water being dumped on my head. Damn this game is rewarding!

Incidentally, I took him out using only 2 Sonic Bombs. The thing got stunned a few times via my cat's bombs too. I also charged up a lot, using my Large Bone hammer. That got me into trouble sometimes since I was still in animation when he's tailwhip, etc.

I really do need to start attending MH Mondays, but I haven't gotten the PS3 ad-hoc thingy downloaded yet. I'll do that this week and try for next Monday. You guys have fun!

Just got this game 3 days ago, but not my first mh. Beat kushala/tigarex/dual blangonga/shakalaka But I need to know what quest unlocks the rathalos/rathian quests in the elder's. I know they are in the 5 star quests, I just don't know which mission unlocks them.

If no one knows then I have a second question. I havent played in a while but I'm pretty sure they are the ones who give you FireWyvern Fluid right? any advice on getting some if not from them?

googling a monster hunter ingredient is your best bet for direct access to the most accurate information on where to get any given thing.

Pretty positive los/ian have it, I just don't think I'll find an answer for this exact question anywhere google would bring me.

Sucks because I need this fire sword now, and by the time I get to los I will have had to work my ass off to win the fight already.

I don't have my PSP at the moment so I can't be sure, but I think that there are 2-star missions in the guild with rathalos and rathian. You can't get all of the usual rewards from rathalos(rathalos webbings and maybe the wings and tails) but I believe that they do drop FireWyvern Fluid.

The first time you can fight against rathalos in the elder missions is in the 6-star urgent "A troublesome pair". In order to unlock that mission you need to clear the following 5-star missions:
-The Poison Seige
-The Runaway Diablos
-Ultimate Crab Dinner
-Terror of the Gravios

Thanks a bunch I guess my memory is a bit fuzzy from mh2. Guild hall it is.

This game is completely amazing and anyone who has never played a Monster Hunter needs to play it

It's the best parts of a bunch of games, and its freaking enormous

It does have some negatives, but they are far, far outweighed by its strengths

Ok, im stuck again...
Im HR2 and basarios is giving me a headache just like khezu. My LS keeps bouncing, but this time ALL of my attacks bounce...

My sword is a Eager Cleaver, it has green sharpness and thunder attrib, and my armor is, the same Melahoa Set.

But right know there are no new weapons, i cant upgrade because the next version needs more advanced materials and there is no LS with better sharpness at the crafter...

Should I change my weapon to fight it or there is a way to kill it with LS in my currect situation?

Anyway, to make High level armor (like U or S) it will need Low level materials? I havent bought a new armor set because I cant decide which one or if its ok to spend all the rare materials like ears, wings, etc...

To get high level armor can I buy a low level, and ugrading it with armor spheres it will become a high level armor? or i need to craft it when it its available?

Whats the best way to get Garuga Wings? Is there a way like Kut Ku ear? throwing a sonic bomb after ripping its ears?

Damn, a lot of questions :P

A very good tip for fighting Basarios is using a couple of bomb+ to tear up his belly. It will leave him with a big scar, which you will never bounce against. And it deals a lot more damage.

Need motivation to continue. Reached a point where it just is to difficult for me, HR3 and fighting the urgent 8* or 9* (dual big bloses). Do I really need to start farming for low level U / S armors to get the armor needed for these quests? I have 300 now in my diablos armor (autotracking, fast eating and earplugs). Mainly uses swords, inn all the combos they come in. All my weapons aren't going to get upgraded befor HR4, and thats just to far a head.

Innitially thougt the black diablos in HR3 was easy, took his tail and horns, but he just never died (the only thing I miss is a energybar for the monsters..) and when there was five minutes left, I just attaced him every chance I got, and then he got a lucky hit and killed me while I was stunned.

Sadly I can't connect to the internett with my PS3 so linking is a option. So I guess this was it for me until (i hope) tri gets to the psp...

I send trenya to the forest / desert with 300pts (my max currently) and it brings me a lot of Firewyvern Fluid, give it a try.

Last night's session's turn-out was pretty light.

kassatsu and I did a treasure quest. oracrest showed up and we decided to get kassatsu up to HR 9.

It went pretty well up to rathalos, which was the last quest needed to unlock the urgent. I was K.O.ed while I was trying to find where I put the cool drinks in my inventory so that I could give a couple to oracrest. I didn't notice the los charging all the way from the other side of the map.

I was pretty annoyed with how that los quest went, but I made my share of mistakes I suppose.

kassatsu left.

oracrest and I did a g-rank teo and that went pretty well. We broke the horn and got a repel.

A random HR 6 pub joined us and we did gaoren and akantor. oracrest left. I remained to help with dual hypno, but I had been tempted to leave and head over to the more busy J lobbies.

I kind of think that we should have ignored him and done more g-rank teo quests.

I need some help with HR6 Urgent.
I am up to akantor. . . . lots of flash bombs and a good group!

I should be on tonight if anyone wants to help out. J-2 as always

PSN-add: mummite

I might be down to help. Around what time.

Should be on around 9:00 pacific time. I am usually on almost every night at some point. I use my PSN friends list to find and meet up with other hunters. makes it easy to find people on AD-Hoc party

Just hit HR6 (100% single-player). What a pain those 2 Tigrex were, 1 by itself is simple, but a few times in a row they just stuck together in the top-most zone and stayed there.

I decided to exit out and plan to end this nonsense faster. So to the eternal dismay of several high-rank Khezu and Gypceri, I went on a hunting spree to build a Khezu Shock Blade.

And that was that. Come next mission, took only about 20 no-nonsense minutes to kill1/capture 1 of the dual Tigrex. And fortunately they never stuck together for long this time.

100% single player? There's a man I respect. Guess you main GS? or do you switch it up with every weapon type? I try to pick a weapon type per mh and stick with it throughout the game.

Yeah, among melee GS is my main, though close behind is LS depending on enemy. Tigrex and Gypceros for example are two that based on how I play I do much better GS for the first, LS for the latter.

I also switch to bowgun frequently, though that is now evenly split between light/heavy. Some lights like the Melynx Helldoll (rapid Fire element shot) can kick some serious tail.

Whose is that? Is it yours?? It's awesome! If there was a huge flute/shakuhachi looking thing, I'd definitely go Hunting Horn!

This is a bit of a shameless plug, but if anyone would like a different take on the whole music video of the hunt thing (none of that Linkin Park shit here!), I just finished my first experiment. Couldn't upload it to Youtube because of copywright issues, so a good friend kindly hosted for me.

If you're interested, please check it out!

Just managed to get myself a pale khezu steak while on my break at work :D Took damn long enough.

Made my True Devil S. and at lunch gonna try and take out those 2 bastard Monoblos for the 7*(IIRC) Elder Village Urgent Quest :D

Still havent played this online yet but once i get a bit further and some better gear im gonna give it a go

I just started playing this over the weekend. I've only scratched the surface compared to you guys, but I'm having a lot of fun, and I'm hooked. :D This is my first MH, too. I may get myself set up for Xlink Kai soon (Adhoc Party would be difficult...I'd need an external wireless router to hook the PS3 up to).

Man, I know this question's gonna sound dumb, but how long did it take you to get that loot? It's not starter equipment, right?

I've tried to get into MH numerous times, since it seems like it's a game right up my alley, but I always give up because I never feel like I'm making any progress. I spent a few days with MHFU and it felt like such a slog. I think after 6-8 hours I'd upgraded my sword once or twice and only managed to make one new piece of armor. Never made it to HR2. It just felt so grindy. It felt like I was definitely playing it wrong, that I was so close to figuring out the proper way to tackle the game and progress, but it's just never clicked. I tried playing on Adhoc Party a few times but it was hard to find dudes at my level, even in rooms named "HR1" and stuff. Ended up with guys way stronger fighting beasts that one shotted me. It sucked.

I'm looking forward to MH3 though. I'll probably have an easier time getting into it since the PSP cramps up my hands pretty bad.

I just topped 15 hours, though I probably had most of that stuff at 10-12 hours. I just got the sword. The armor is mostly from materials available in the mountains, and maybe a bit in the jungle. I'm still on HR1. I've barely touched the town quests, but I've cleared all the 1-star snowy mountain guild quests and a couple of the jungle quests. It's grindy, yeah, but it doesn't feel like a slog to me, for some reason. (To be honest, it feels a lot like Colosseum: Road to Freedom to me... it's got a similar sort of rhythm, except MH is a lot more polished.)

(Man, I've really put 15 hours in already? I guess being on vacation makes that sort of okay...)

I also, used the same low armor (melahoa set, upgraded with armor spheres from the farm) until I needed to fight monoblos / white monoblos at the LV4 stars quest (HR2). Armor helps, but if monsters dont hit you, well, any armor can do it. i find better to play the game and after a couple or quests or a new monster quest, check the crafter ans see if a set is there with skills / def you like. It it is, just check what do you need to make it, most of the thime you will have already like 50-60% of materials, so you only need to get the rest of materials to make it.

I also thought on getting online, but I better fight the monster offline until Im rank 4-5. That way I will now how to fight the mosnters and their moves.

But right now my psp broke so no MH for me :(.

I am just starting to utilize the roll right when you get up. If you execute it fast enough, it simply elongates the invulnerability time of the stand-up. I have been able to avoid a lot of wyvern charges by rolling through their legs just as I stand up, and they are past me by the time vulnerability kicks in again.

Well, since i cant play monster hunter because my psp broke, searching for someway to fix my psp instead of buying one, I saw these clone limited edition monster hunter psp housings on ebay.

a5hov8.jpg

And since I liked that limtied edition they sold only on japan, I'm in love with one of these :lol Since I need to open my psp to fix it probably I will change all the housing too :D .

Question time!

Does anyone have bought one of these housings?

How does the platic feels? cheap? good?

Is it clean plastic, or its is scratched like some low quality plastic?

Is it hard to change a full housing? I know the faceplates are easy but the fullhousing you need to tear apart all the psp...

Well I hope some of you guys have saw one of these or have one... A high res photo will be appreciated :lol
