Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

LOL! Whoever designed that bundle pack clearly has never played or seen anything about the series in their lives (cue the Inafune comment about how Capcom are run by people who know nothing about games...)

So at this rate, and the mysterious disappearance of MH3rd HD for Vita, are we really never going to see 3rd in the West?

I mean this shitty bundle just screams that Capcom USA know the absolute bare minimum about the series :/

Not going to happen. Personally I have given up on getting 3rd.

At this rate, I'm inclined to agree with you. Seen so many people at cons playing Portable 3rd and here I am still playing Unite. Should have imported it ages ago. :(

Yeah I am on a GO so no importing for me... I gave up on it when they said 3rdG was going to 3DS. I have put more hours into MHF2/MHFU then any other game I have ever owned, and was looking to do the same with 3rd but capcom doesn't care about loyal fans of the series in the west.

Are any of the other Monster Hunters available in Europe for PSP worth playing? I have Freedom Unite but I don't think I have any of the other ones. Are they worth buying after playing freedom unite?

Freedom Unite is the only one worth getting out of the localised versions.

MHFU has everything from MHF2 and more, MHF1 has some different mechanics and not as much content. You basically have the best version of MH outside of an import.

Bumping this thread to talk about how much better this game is on Vita than it ever was for me on PSP. I could never do the claw, so I'm really glad that this game is playable for me now.

But damn...this HR1 quest where you have to get the goldenfish in the jungle. I spent the first 20ish minutes walking around trying to find any fish. Then I got on the internet and found out they were on zone 9. Then, I spent the last 20 minutes failing the quest. I thought the small goldenfish were good enough, went back to the drop box, found out I was wrong.

Then I got 2 of the actual goldenfish, and of course that's when the big boss thing invaded the area. So my time ran out right as I was getting my 3rd one. What an annoying quest! But I am sure I'll come right back to it to make proper bait and get it done much faster.

I just got this game the other day! It's pretty hard for me, and I die a lot. Is there any real story, or do I just keep doing hunts that get harder and harder?

Maybe I don't understand how this game works but is it like Ragnarok Odyssey? Where there's like certain time limits to do quests and each area is broken up into little areas?

I always thought the game was open world lol.

yeah really annoying, almost impossible, quest if you don't make the bait. vita sounds good though, the sole reason i was going to buy one was for the monhun games i already have. but alas various life stuff came up that ate all my vita money so it's going to have to wait a few months.

technically there is a story. in practice yes, you just keep doing hunts that get harder and harder.

start at hub area, select quest, go to open-ish environment broken up into discrete areas, attempt quest within time-limit. not open world by any measure.

Yeah I have to basically do other hunts until the lady sells snakebee larva because I only have 1 in my inventory anyway. I actually caught my 2/3 with regular bait, but I don't feel like trying to go through that again haha.

And I know it sounds crazy, but I basically bought my Vita to play PSP games with. Obviously I'll be buying Vita games and using it as my multimedia player as well, but a big selling point was the 2nd analog for PSP. When you can get one, I do not think you will be disappointed at all.

Skip those quests. There's one where you have to catch 8. Even when I had and did everything to make them spawn as quickly as possible, I still timed out 3-4 times before I got to beat the quest.

I love when this thread gets bumped.

The goldenfish quests are the worst, even with the bait. Skip them and get your HR up then come back to them for the 100% completion.

I personally was never a claw user, I could manage the camera just fine but having it on the r-stick on my Vita is fantastic. I really hope more people get into the game because of this as it really is my favorite game and I get excited to see new people enjoying it.

I've played like 6-7 hours of this game in the last 2 days because of the camera being manageable to me now. I basically made do on my Go, but it definitely had its moments where it was frustrating because the camera was pointed in a shitty direction. Now on Vita it's such a fluid experience. And that's not to mention that the bigger screen and bilinear filtering make it look so much better too.

I didn't realize you could skip quests, either. I thought you had to do them all to get your HR up. I've somehow spent like 30 hours in this game just playing the first couple sets of the villager lady's missions and doing the training over and over to see what weapons I like. And of course, grinding for things to make armor. I didn't even start doing guild missions until recently lol

Yeah the guild quests are the ones that raise your hunter rank, there are certain quests that will get you the HR urgent. To go from HR1 - HR2 its the guild 3* that you need to do. You can skip the 1* and 2* and come back to them, although 1* does have a rathalos and rathian quests that are pretty simple that will help you get the hang of those monsters, rewards aren't great but its an easy way to get parts for those better armors.

If you have any questions drop me a PM. I have put over 1k hours between MHF2 and MHFU so I am always happy to lend some pointers or advice.

Been playing this again on my vita it is still a lot of fun. About to upgrade to eager cleaver and only using giaprey armor while wrapping up the 3 star quests. Long sword is my fave.

I think I've compared this game to Demon's Souls before, and just like the Souls games I can tell I'll have to keep checking a wiki and asking people for help on forums. The only thing I don't like about this game is that it's keeping me from Vita stuff haha

I know. Its almost perfect on the Vita. One bit of advice. Its not all about being dedicated to a certain weapon. There are certain weapons that will make certain monsters easier to hunt. I CAN use a GS on Plessy but outside of the training school there is no need as I can use a LBG and shoot the crap out of it in about half the time. You'll start to see that the higher you get in HR. I can't use anything but a hammer on Rathalos. Head pound and stagger will bring down a G rank Los in about 5 minutes, with hr7-9 gear of course.

You could charge attack Tigrex all day, if the raw damage of your GS is good enough. What in particular that troubles you?

I GS Tigrex after each of his attacks, positioning myself at the left side of tail - start charging when the tail flicks and release then attack when he turns to face you. Roll away or block and repeat.

That's exactly what I'm doing and I'm able to kill/capture him everytime thanks to a large stock of mega potions. I'm just trying to figure out how to avoid being hit. Often times I'm being hit and he clearly didn't touch me.

You're probably too close, just position yourself near the end of the tail.

You can also charge attack near his left paw... When he runs at you, with practice you'll be able to roll under his armpit (w/o evade).

Worked like a charm (I was too close). Now I'm crushing him with ease. Many thanks!

Picked this up on PSN for Vita... now I don't play Vita games :(

Up to elder 2* urgent now. What's the point of hunter rank and should I not bother with guild quests until I finish elder stuff?

Hunter Rank allows you to open up a new tier of missions (indicated by the *) to do (with newer/tougher monsters and upgrades of earilier ones).

Guild quests is where the fun is since that is when you can party up with other people to hunt monsters, etc (you can still attempt to solo them if you want). The elder stuff is basically a tutorial of sorts to prepare you for the guild quests so you could do them first to get a hang of the game or get some friends and go for the guild quests. Its up to you really

There are some monsters that only show up in elder and some that only show up in Guild, so keep that in mind too. Also as HR increases so does the quality of the rewards which increase the quality of your gear. While it is fun to clear out the elders in high rank gear its also fun to do the elder quests with gear that is on par for that elder *.

I can't believe i forgot to write this :/

So is the long sword a good weapon for a beginner? I kinda like it because it's big like the great-sword, but faster, and the size of it gives me a certain margin of error with my attacks, so that I'm not totally screwed over if I miss or anything. Also: Are helmets suuuuuuppppeeeeer necessary? I kinda like my guy's flowing blue animu hair.

Man... this game is pretty fun. :)

Between this and Dark Souls... omg... not enough time in a day.

I would say the best for a beginner is Sword and Shield. You can block (no blocking for LS), use items when blocking as well. High elemental affinities, and its fast. Chaining combos is pretty simple for an SNS user.

My problem with sword and shield was it didn't have much reach, but I suppose I can give it a shot again.

Ok, I guess I'll stick with elder for now since I don't know anyone who plays and am not sure how psp online works with vita

As a fellow noob, I ended up using hammer... my reason is that the low dmg weapons made my fights drag on which increased the chance of me being hit (also time for sharpening etc). With a hammer, I charge and let go for huge dmg when I see an opening. A lot less chance of me missing a dodge if I kill mobs in 2 or 3 hits.

I'm starting to learn/like new weapons now.... like long sword

Yea i went with Long Sword due to the reach it had plus i like to be mobile rather than blocking so i didn't mind the long sword not being able to block.

Now i'm using a hammer for some variety and also because its so satisfying to KO/stun a monster :).

Yes it does reduce the length but with the added ability to block. Usually you will end up under the monster's legs just slashing away at them to trip them up, while blocking as they turn.

Hammers are great (I mainly use Hammers or GunLances) for stunlocking monsters. Bash that head a few times and stun it.

Like I have said many times there are certain weapons that make certain monsters easier. LGB or Bow for Plessy, Hammers for Ian and Los, SnS for Kirin. GS for Tigrex if you can get your timing down.

Don't feel limited to one weapon, all are fun. Also if you are more comfortable with LS over SnS don't make me change you. heh

This should be law (though Plessy is supposedly fixed in 3G now).

As in it comes out of the water more? I have noticed that in the elder quests aside from the frequent slither move it actually is out of the water more then in the high or g rank quests. I'll still take LBGs to a plessy fight, it's in my DNA now.
