Monster Hunter Rise |OT| A Whole New World

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Personally I haven't used WR to damage monsters, I just ignore them or launch them into a wall and get off. My two buddies are dealing more damage than any ridden wyvern :/
I used to do that in the demo, but it's much better to use it to attack the other monster because that makes it to drop a lot of materials.

I mean yeah it's not the worst thing ever, but I liked the previous mounting minigame as it was less intrusive imo.

I tried out a bit more of the Lance and SnS, but for now I'm just going to stick with the Hammer. I'll have to try out all the weapons more before picking my secondary.

You know what I'm gonna say: don't be greedy for mats :p

I mean, if your goal of getting mats faster is to play Fashion Hunter, then Wyvern Riding attacks doing more damage is helping you get to that goal efficiently.

Or would you want WR attacks to do less damage than your own???

I agree. Game is great and very fun, but a lot of the chllenge of previous ones is gone. You no longer need to prepare before a hunt, and hunting monsters is basically following their icon on the minimap, as you no longer need to know which are their favorite zones to hang around or where their nests are.

Also, fuck wivern riding. I really hope this is the last iteration we see of that mechanic. It breaks the pace of the fight and it trivializes having two monsters on the same area.

Aside from that I'm having a lot of fun tho. Gameplay (aside for wr) is the best ever, and a lot of the new monsters are cool as fuck to fight against.

Despite dumping some 600+ hours into World I always felt like it was somewhat the end of the Monster Hunter that I knew and loved. While you could definitely argue that a lot of the quality of life changes in World were for the better and reduced the tedium - I still couldn't ever shake the feeling that it somewhat compromised the old MH formula in order to appeal to a larger, more casual audience. When I started World I couldn't get over the fact that you could go back to camp and access your entire inventory while on a quest as it entirely removed the need to plan your item loadout. Gone were the days of slowly watching your potions get depleted on a quest and the tension that was added because of that.

With that said I'm having a blast with Rise and I think I may ultimately like it more than World. Maybe that's just because I've come to terms with Monster Hunter becoming a AAA IP and I've learned to accept the concessions they've made in order to appeal to a larger audience - or maybe it's because my codgy and probably pretentious ideals of what old MH was have been reconciled with how much fun it is to just wirebug around like a maniac. Although I do think they need to ramp the difficulty up a bit to counter balance all the new tools we have - hoping the post release content (and hopefully G rank in a year) will help with that. All in all I'm pleasantly surprised at how fun it is to play Rise - even just moving around the map.

Yeah, World was a half step back for me. I preferred GU. Rise is my favorite over both.

Ok eventually I'll make a survey after most people have had time to fight most of the monsters available, but I'm just curious in the interim, MH-GAF.

  • Main weapon
  • Sub weapon
  • Favorite monster to fight
  • Least favorite monster to fight

For me it's:
  • Switch Axe
  • Insect Glaive
  • Bishaten
  • Tobi-Kadachi

Totally agree. Rise is such a great foundation too. Considering Capcom's history of post release content for MH titles I could easily see Rise becoming my favorite of the series.

I haven't really played around with anything other than SnS and dual blades yet - but goddamn are dual blades strong in this one. Been using the Dango dual blades with sleep. Waking the monsters up by slam dunking a mega barrel bomb is something else.

Goss Harag is such a menacing looking monster. Looks so sinister - can really see the yokai influence in his design. Would be right at home as an enemy in Nioh.
Basarios is a little bit less of a pain than usual but still feels like you're fighting a fuckin rock.

It's funny, I think the built-in Mind's Eye on SA's sword mode has trivialized Basarios for me. He's just a big HP sponge. But with other weapons and the constant deflects, I could see him being a huge pain.

Yep, they help me get to my goal faster... but gameplay wise I don't like it and I would just prefer to WR to be gone. I'm weird I know. ^^u

I totally agree with you man. I miss old MH but this one is just too fun to play, so much that I almost don't care about it being casualized.

And regarding difficulty... Well, village quests where a breeze, but hub LR solo fights are a bit more challenging, and I can see myself having problems soloing HR fights. We'll see.
  • Main weapon
  • Sub weapon
  • Favorite monster to fight
  • Least favorite monster to fight
  • Charge Blade
  • Gun Lance
  • Goss Harag. Sword bear is very cool, he has cool attacks and being able to fuck his swords up adds some cool strategy to the fight.
  • Basarios. Rock dude is a pain to fight and not very interesting.

Fun hunting R6Rider R6Rider , Man I wish the chat wasn't so terrible in game. It's not just that it's 'point to letters' typing, it's that there's so much lag from when you press a button until it registers. It's so frustrating. I've never in my life used D*scord, but I'm seriously considering it just to make communication easier.

If anyone in GAF is interested in doing a lobby with us, we usually seem to be good after 4PM pacific. It'd be fun to get 4x people.

The chat is awful and it goes away too fast so I constantly have to open the the chat log and check if I missed anything. On top of that when the keyboard thing pops up it takes up the whole screen so you can't see if other players are responding.

Also, that Tetranadon lagging in place was hilarious.

Yea I have to start remembering to hold that share button. I guess just like PS4/PS5, the Switch will record the past 30 seconds if you hold the screenshot button down. I've had some really awesome/funny looking things happen but I always forget to take the video clip.

I'll have to try that out. I've just been using my Elgato. See if I can upload it really quick.

Wait, PS4 can record the past 30 seconds? I thought PS4 can only record after you press the share button, not the past x seconds.

It's always recording, you can set the button behavior too IIRC in settings on what a press vs. a hold does. Default is hold to capture last 30 seconds.

*edit* here's an article about it. I guess by default it records for 15 mins backwards.

A different article about Switch says:
If you want to record Nintendo Switch Gameplay without Capture Card, you'd better take full advantage of the Capture Button on your Nintendo Switch Gameplay. To long-press the Capture Button on your left gameplay handle, then you can capture up to 30 seconds of Gameplay and then you can view the captured videos on the Albums on your Nintendo Switch.

Woah, I didn't know about that feature on PS4. Thanks!!

Yep, I'll be around today hopefully. The weekend is mostly clear, but I might bee around sporadically. We can coordinate in the #gaming channel of the GAF Discord. If you need help figuring it out, I can fumble through. I'm not very hip to Discord myself.

There's voice channels too that we can use to coordinate the hunt.

Ehhh, I can kind of understand; you want more mats but not in a way that requires WR. Feels like you're succumbing to FOMO (fear of missing out), unless there are essential mats that require WR to drop, then I'd agree that's not good.

One other thing I love about WR is that now I get to play as the monster; all those years cursing Rathian's tail flip since MH3U and now I get to use it to slap some other ugmon, it's like revenge 10 years in the making.

One of my favorite things about online on the switch is no chat. No messaging either. I just want to nerd out to some videogames, not coordinate a battalion in real time.

There’s so little point to ‘friends’ I don’t usually bother. I can’t clarify who is who anyway. Lists of strangers are useless. I just use matchmaking.

I do think it’s stupid that nintendo charges people for nothing, but whatever, $3.

How necessary is a headset and microphone for a 4 player smack-around, really? Mostly honest question...

There is no audio chat function as far as I can tell. Even in the Nintendo Switch app.

Yeah for stuff like this you just go in and kill the thing. Use your own brain when it comes to the weapon types other hunters are using and acknowledge when they are using status strategies like para/poison/stun/exhaust.

*laughs in HBG*

No talking necessary. I only speak in daka daka.

Wii assets, extremly low polygon count.

The switch chipset was ancient at release, of course there are going to be some background assets that don't look great. The monsters in the game look fantastic.

Also pokemon shit had N64 assets so this isn't nearly as bad.

Lol, just fought Tobi-Kadachi and really focused on the counter morph switch skill for the CB. This seems broken fun. I guess this is how you tank stuff for the pew pew guys.

Super clutch though, I can morph counter and dodge my way to full phials, then charge my shield/axe or unload damage.

The spinning axe skill is also tits mcghee, and doesn’t seem to need a charge.

I keep forgetting I can also absorb an attack with the wirebug. Fun.

Just got into high rank. Guess the tutorial is over and the game starts now uh. :goog_relieved:

Btw holy shit the Apex Arzuros. I thought I could easily solo him but he put a good fight. Wish I could fight him in the normal maps but whatever, the defense area felt like an arena anyways.

Add another 4 Magnamalo hunts over lunch and still no gd plate. I should probably just give up for now since HR Magna will likely have increased plate drop %. I need to go back and solo through the 1-3* hub quests. I like having that red checkmark next to all quests.

No 3% from carves/quests/breaks 1% from cats. I just wanted to use the upgraded Magnamalo SA for early HR hunts but this frustration isn't worth it for something I'll grow out of anyways. I'll just craft the ore one and move on until something better opens up.

Maybe try to capture Magnamalo, I got the plate from capturing reward.
