Monster Hunter: World (PS4/XB1 early 2018, PC later, directed by MH4 lead planner)

A lot of that rumour was purely made up though.

Because it isnt. My posts alluding to this game have been ridiculed by some for months, and now that the game turns out to be real, the new spin is "but it's a spin off". It's the next major MH title. Deal with it.

"next major MH title"=/= MH5 lol

When X came out in Japan it wasnt considered MH5. It was just the next big MH title at the time as well. Not the new numbered title but just a spin off

Until I see Capcom outright say this is MH5 this is a spin off too no matter how much you want to spin it

"MH5"

Well that's wrong. It's Monster Hunter World.

"Many complicated weapons not planned for now"

Well that's wrong too.

And most of the information reads like generic speculation on what a PS4 Monster Hunter would be like. We haven't seen QTEs, but it's the sort of thing you would think up when you want to talk about "westernizing" the series.

Feels bizarre that people keep taking this rumor seriously.

MH4U is literally one of the top 10 bestselling japanese thirdparty games this entire generation* and was a top 5 game not too long ago.
1.5 million is nothing to sneeze at and not "selling like shit".

*sales in EU+US
I never follow npd. Didn't realize most games sale under 1 million. How to devs stay in business?

I don't understand all the negativity, this looks great

Except the "monsters" design looks uninspired compared to the classics

As far as bowguns go, thank fuck this doesn't play like traditional MH.

True. Bowgun sucks.

I have played MH since Portable 2 and I have not really seen anything to be up in arms about. MH could really use to get rid of some archaic stuff. I am interested in seeing more.

I felt the original, or current version(since World isn't out yet), bowguns are really fun, they also feel very in-line with the rest of the weapon selection, the game is also balanced around the fact that they aren't rapid fire weapons: takes very few hits with an HBG to kill most monsters. I say this as someone who can't use any precision weapon well in any game.

Having a minigun(according to the trailer) felt weird to me...

As someone who has been primarily a Blademaster in all the games I've played, the Greatsword looks unchanged so I'm fine.

So the rumor was Sony moneyhatted Capcom to make a westernised MH that wouldn't appear specifically on Nintendo Switch so main developers started "MH5" and after that, some Capcom members panicked about the decision and started a separate more traditional "MH5 Portable" for Switch (silly name, since Switch is also a home console)... right?

Money is the only reason I can see for this not being on Switch. It's not a pretty game, pretty sure Switch could handle this with minimal downgrades.

Because even the bigger Japanese games like Nier: Automata and Persona 5 probably have about 1/10th the budget of Call of Duty and Destiny. Probably closer to 1/100th of the marketing budget. Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's biggest, most expensive game ever and it broke even after 2 million sales worldwide.

I was sleeping during the conference. Did I miss any meltdowns in GAF after the announcement?
This might count? I'm not exactly sure what this is.

I fucking hate all this console war garbage. Go back to the fucking 90s with that shit.

Small bunch of you motherfuckers are spewing it and lol'ing about it before anyone has even said some shit. Probably don't even give a half a shit about the games. Go kick rocks barefoot.

I'm here for motherfucking Monster Hunter. Fucking bring it.

Bonus post that made me laugh:

Trailer kind of reminds me of the MH4 trailer in that it shows mostly world mechanics, but not much combat. Glowy detective thing is weird, but ultimately implies you are still interacting with the world to make your basic items. First big monster has that MonHun vibe, so that's good. Them focusing on solo play with SOS drop-in sounds a bit concerning, like they misinterpreted the reasons the Souls games do well in the West.

Ultimately I think this will be mostly MH with some nice graphics and like 25% of the mechanics tweaked towards Western audience. I think it'll do okay, and review mostly the same as other MH in the West, as I just don't think the core ethos of hunting/surviving has ever clicked with the West and a new shell and some changes won't change that feeling.

Bowgun is a precision weapon until you equip Pellet shots.

Then it's a teamfucker that would make the Longsword envious

Slowly. And you could always dodge between shots. Not a big difference.
If you used a gun with rapid-fire, as soon as you press the A button you are rooted to the ground and fire exactly as many shots as the gun rapid-fired, whether that's 2, 3, or 4, and then waited for the recoil animation. Then you could move. The only way I ever see LBGs die is when they get greedy with rapid fire, not allowing enough time to dodge. Being able to move while shooting, even if relatively slow, is absolutely a big deal. It's a game-changer. They will have to significantly rebalance the weapon. Not that I'm saying they couldn't, just that it's a big change.

So this isn't a mainline MH game? Still hoping for MH5 Switch.

MHW is for the West. That's who the main target is, it's Capcom's attempt at getting a big seller outside of Japan. Its gameplay systems are being changed in order to reach that goal.

Traditional MH will continue on portable systems.

I think it's still mainline. But yeah traditional format seems to be sticking with Switch.

Loved Bow Hunting. Cannot wait to see what they have modified from the combat.

Increased mobility makes it already way more interesting for me.

Also open world means actual tracking of monsters, not just paintball and look at a minimap

The majority of gameplay we've seen has basically been world traversal.

It's baffling they didn't provide more combat footage.

I'd assume so, but reading this thread, it seems like a lot of people wanted open-world gameplay where you tracked the monsters like that. Having a seamless world, to me, implies that the process to do a hunt won't be as fast as we're accustomed to, unless the world part is just for show, and they just auto-teleport you to the monster locations after you fight them once and identify their habitat or something.

The easy-in/easy-out nature of the portable renditions of the series is something tailored to the gameplay loop they've established with the map/hub design of those games.
My thoughts on this after pondering for a while... The monster tracking to me just seems like it's an extension to how you would look for the monster at the quest start before you start memorizing the starting zone(s), and mainly created to aid the player since there are no longer any numbered zones. And even though the map is zone-less, you may still just be dropped off at designated points, from which the layout, monster locations, etc. are more or less predetermined. I doubt that Capcom has gone as far as making maps evolve or have significant randomization, and it'll probably be not the huge leap in gameplay that people are afraid of or are excited about, but rather just the same basic game but with a fresh coat of paint and new twists.

Everyone keeps talking about all the new features as if they were mandatory and the only options.

"Oh you HAVE to stealth."
"Oh bowguns are now exclusively machine guns."
"Oh you HAVE to use the grappling hook."

Like, no. They show the player cooking meat in every MH trailer. I stopped cooking meat ever since they let you make your felynes cook it. I never use the portable spit ever. Just cause it's in the trailer, doesn't make it mandatory and the only option. They wanna show new stuff because its NEW.

One thing that seems weird to me, and IMHO gives some credence to the initial rumor of Capcom being uneasy with a deal with Sony is the PC release.

If Capcom was laser-focused on a takeover of the west with the MH franchise, a PC sku is a very important and Capcom has been the best Japanese developer to support the PC. So, why is the PC sku delayed? I would think that World was indeed the future of MH, and PC is a lesser platform in Japan. But then, Capcom (among others) were caught by surprise by the initial success of the Switch and the less than stellar performance of the Ps4 in Japan and scrambled to put a MH there in order to not burn that bridge.

MHXX looks like a rushed port to me, as even Wii U's MHU3 had updated fonts, that the Switch port lacks.

But why exactly?

On the contrary I think if they just made it look like dark souls they'd sell alot.

I'm excited for the ability to move (slowly) while shooting as long as the weapons remain relatively balanced (no reason to expect they'd not balance for this change).

As for the lamentations of the death of precision aiming: you've literally seen 8 seconds of footage featuring a gun. If all you saw of MHX was the mega nuke of the HBG or the crazy backflipping anime style mega smashes of the hunter arts would you immediately assume the standard combos were gone?

In this trailer we see one downward chop, one upswing, and a mounted swipe. Are those the only attacks for the GS? Are there no other weapons to use? Why the immediate jump to GAME IS RUINED?

If that was how they decided to market the game then yes, I would assume that X/Gen was about the flashy stuff and didn't have traditional combat. We can only go off of what they decided to show us and what they decided to show us was a machine gun LBG.

Capcom doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt considering the crap they've pulled with their other franchises.

The trailer for this in development game didn't show every single weapon and move, so it's safe to assume they're not in the game and bowgun can only be in minigun mode.

It's made by the main team. It can't be any more "main line" than that, whatever that means.

Monster Hunter needs evolution. With success of "hunting" games like Dragon Dogma and Horizon Zero Dawn, I don't see how the direction MHW is going is the bad thing.
