Monster Train 2 is a masterpiece. It is a unique concept, brilliantly executed, and something anyone interested in the genre should play. It is designed in a way that lets the player do incredibly strange and powerful things

Let's hope the conductor doesn't come through because Monster Train 2 is a truly first class ride through deckbuilder heaven.

I adored the first game and would put it right there with Balatro and Slay the Spire. Sounds like this is a banger. I didn't play the demo because I knew I was gonna buy it anyway. Between this and Slay the Spire 2 this year us deck building bros are eating good. Looking forward to getting into it tonight.

Been waiting for this, really loved the first game. Not sure how much time I'll have to play it though with all these other great games coming out recently / today.

Had no clue this was a thing until the GP announcement. Monster Train is awesome, fully agree with OP that it is up with Balatro and Slay The Spire in the card-based rogue lite Mount Rushmore.

Will definitely check this out

I'll give it a try, but deckbuilders is a hard pill, I feel like it was generic and overdone years ago. Still, this seems top tier in the genre so worth paying attention to.

Monster Train OG is brillaint I want to play but I need a free 150 hours... Switch 2 gets priority sadly.

Send the mob after me if you must BUT....

Slay the Spire >= Monster Train 1 > Balatro.

I did play all these quite a bit albeit Balatro I played far less then Spire or Train.

I thought Monster Train 2 was out in August, I don't know why, but for some reason that date was stuck in my head. I bit on Fantasy Life I yesterday (it is fantastic so far) and now with this out I may try to burn through MT2 before getting sunk into Fantasy Life.

IMO buy if you like:
Strategy that forces you to a adapt your approach across multiple runs.
Skill ceilings that raise with you as you get better at the game.
Very little time commitment OR blowing a multiple hours pushing runs as far as you can take them.
Hardware conscious game that will scale with hardware (steam deck to PCMR).

Waaayy too much for that kind of game. Also an indie game. $24.99 at most......
Apparently the first game was the same price at launch but I got it heavily discounted on sale for PC. I had some decent fun with it. Some people would be happy paying full price. YMMV.

I have not bought the second game yet as I'm not a super card game fan. Will get it on sale later on like I did the first.

This slipped under my radar, I had no idea it even was announced. What a great surprise! I loved the first one.

Just got this one on Switch. Won't really have a chance to sink my teeth into it for a couple days, but it seems like more of the first, which is a great thing.

I hope the full release is much better than the demo.

It is. I won't spoil anything but there is a moment in the progression that really had me like 'wtf'. It's basically a very refined and expanded version of the first game. I think I have almost unlocked everything, but I really loved the first game so YMMV.

This has become my go to, to kill time after meetings, when I need a break.

It's so addicting, but easy to put down when you need a hard stop.

I've been having a lot of fun with MT2, the new clans are a lot of fun and the new mechanics that have been added are solid additions to the overall game. I've been getting into the "just one more game" loop several nights in a row going on for hours every time I play.

Been playing since release and really like it. Again, sometimes, very rarely, it has felt like once I get to the last boss / level, it's set up that no matter my build I'm designed to lose. I could coast through the entire game and then at the end get just demolished and not really know why. I have beat several runs of course, but this has cropped up enough to make me notice. I go into the fight and after 1 turn just throw my hands up and think "well, this run is dead" (not talking about high covenant ranks either)

Overall though, I am really enjoying it and if I was asked, I would easily recommend it. It was a little over £13 on cdkeys too and that's some price for this quality of game. I also love some of the small crossovers with other games like Inscryption, nice wee bonus (did see people actually complain about this saying they should focus on making the game and not partnerships.... fucking twats)

Yea the cameos are cool. The
balatro
one had me laughing. Did you unlock all the decks?

I've had this experience as well - I've probably played 100 runs so far, and only actually finished two. I can cakewalk through all the first seven fights, then get absolutely wrecked by the final boss - even on the "no covenants" mode. Dude has like 5,000 HP and hits like a truck.

Maybe it's a balance thing, and they haven't quite got that part sorted out, hopefully.

Yea the cameos are cool.
I got the Inscryption one with the weasel and it was whack

I got to that cameo actually and picked the banana relic that actually did the 10% chance thing on my 2nd fight, but then later got an upgraded version that lasted a whopping one fight. Feels like Balatro RNG for me because that game never showed me mercy.

I have not unlocked them all no, but really looking forward to seeing what's up next.

Unlocked the last faction and damn it's so good. I miss my imp decks tho.
If you keep playing, you'll unlock the original factions from the first game

I tried it for a bit and refunded. It doesn't come close to the greatness of the Bazaar:
I've only been playing the Bazaar since a few months. I'm now 250 hours in and can see this being my main game for years to come. The game is the brainchild of Reynad, a former Hearthstone pro with a M:tG background.

Tempo, the dev team refers to the game as a "hero-builder". I'd say it's a mix of deck-builder, auto-battler and rogue-lite with asynchronous PvP. If any of these genres tickle your fancy, I'd recommend checking it out, but be warned, the game's learning curve is huge and the new player experience is pretty hardcore/terrible. It took me about 200 hours of just playing 1 hero, Vanessa, to finally start climbing ranks. Once you're at the level where you can consistently hit silver or gold runs, it's one of the most fun & rewarding games.

I am really enjoying it, happy to see them have some success again after Inkbound which didn't do too well.

Struggling a bit now at higher covenant ranks, but it's good fun. One of the best games I have played this year. I really enjoyed the first one and this is just a great upgrade. A bit addicted to Underborn. Fun guy and /or decay builds. Lazarus League is also great. The others I haven't really figured out how to play yet.

Monster Train really manages to feel unique. Builds can really be wild, they let you get crazy OP sometimes. And the strange music is somehow great. It's like STS on Ketamine. Even if the small story parts are not great.

The only thing I miss a bit is the infusion madness and the risk/reward bets you made in the DLC, but I guess it might make sense to remove it for balancing.

Also great to see that this game is in the OpenCritic "2025 Hall of Fame" currently as #7 for the year.
