On mobile, can't read the article right now. Being a pedophile isn't exactly controllable in itself, but failing to resist those urges in the form of child molestation is obviously wrong though. It said only 39 of them were registered sex offenders, so how did the others get caught?

Reading through the news article, it looks like the investigation went something like this.

They found a forum where the items were being swapped and then ran a blanket search on any internet protocol addresses that had visited the forum. They issued search warrants on 833 places, collected and searched 9,172 items like computers, hard drives, laptops, tablets, cameras, photo books, phones, and so forth.

They then found everything from single pictures to people with over a million images. They then took protective custody of 127 children and then they added up people related to or around the suspects to get to the 431 children. Example: Your neighbor is discovered to be collecting child pornography. Your child is now one of the 431 children.

What's interesting about this is that you have 127 "in danger kids" of undisclosed ages and 2 allegations on a total of 39 prior offenders.

As for single picture cases? That 660 number will probably -after charges are formerly considered and filed- drop to somewhere below half of that number. It'll probably be a slap on the wrist for about half of the people caught in this net.

But the people who do end up with formal charges and prison time are not there by accident or some sort of conspiracy.

The fact that this took six months is a bit alarming though; but it might just be to "make sure" before there was any action taken. I would suspect that anything -for the good of the children- should be done more quickly. Especially if 127 of these kids were in "immediate danger."

That said, here are some interesting numbers.

64,100,000 people live in the United Kingdom.
660 people arrested.

That is 0.001% of the population.

The NCA has 4,500 officers and they worked with 45 police forces. Which means that this would be a sweep of almost the entire United Kingdom. (Wales, England, et cetra.)

I'm pretty sure that there are more instances and this is just a drop in a very large bucket. I would also like to see numbers and statistics regarding gender, sexual orientation, and so forth. I wish those numbers were available.

Good job, law enforcement! But there is a lot of work to do.
