More than 70 killed, 250 wounded in terrorist attack at Sufi Shrine in Pakistan

The bomber blew himself up among devotees in the shrine of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in the town of Sehwan, in Sindh province, police said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack, which has been claimed by so-called Islamic State.

A surge of attacks this week has shattered a period of improving security in Pakistan,

The shrine was crowded as Thursday is considered a sacred day for Muslims to pray there.

The blast, in one of the country's most revered shrines, is the deadliest in a string of bombings in Pakistan this week, claimed by the Pakistan Taliban and other Islamist militants.

At least 250 others were wounded, a senior police official told the BBC. The only hospital in the area was said to be overwhelmed.

ISIS attacks in Pakistan?

I figured they'd be preoccupied with defending their diminishing territories in the ME; didn't realize ISIS was active in South Asia.

Wow, Pakistan has been getting hit really hard in the past 2-3 years with ISIS. A real tragedy. Didn't they attack a school last year, or was that Al-Qaeda?

Really despicable.

Pieces of shits, Pakistan still have to deal with the Taliban ontop of ISIS and AQ. Terrible burden for the government.

Thing is, these sorts of attacks are often because of their diminishing territories. You need an army to defend land, but only a few men to detonate a bomb; one also shows you losing, the other appears strong.

Condolences to the families of the victims.

they attack the Sufi because the extremists don't think they're true muslims. the ignorance and violence, they are doing the work of evil and they are fools if they think it goes unnoticed.

This is absolutely terrible, I hope the love ones of the fallen find peace and the injured will make it.

I can already imagine that Trump will use this to booster his hatred of immigrants and refugees. Expect a Twitter post soon.

I doubt this was orchestrated in Syria. More likely it's just a local Wahhabi terrorist group using the ISIS banner.
Like the Al Qaeda banner before it.

Isn't it the case with these attacks that it's usually local people radicalised through the internet, commit the attack sometimes without suport from the main group, then the group claims it? (Not in the case of more coordinated attacks such as those in Paris)
In any case, as always this is horrendous and I cannot wait for radical sunnism to finally being erradicated.

This happens way too often in Pakistan. This is why i have never gone back to visit. The country simply refuses to take terrorism seriously. There was even talk of negotiating with the Taliban recently. Like are you fucking kidding me?

Don't be like that please.

I'm a Pakistani living abroad too, news like this literally breaks my heart. There's little the government can do. They've been waging operations for years which only deters slightly, negotiating and trying to make sure there's no more attacks on civilians is not a bad course of action.

R.I.P to the victims and hopefully their families are able to get through this difficult time.

Incredibly sad. I can't imagine this being a reality in my home country. My condolences to the family of the victims and those who must live amongst this danger.

Sometimes the problem of Islamic extremism seems completely unsolvable. I don't know how a human can be capable of commiting such an atrocity upon innocent people.

Quite a lot of terrorist attacks are orchestrated from Syria or Iraq using encrypted messaging services. The two attackers in France who murdered a priest never met until they were brought together for the attack by their ISIS handler.

That Saint is one of the traditional figures of South Asian Islam. I've read and listened to his poems. Beautiful beautiful stuff.

The Wahabbi/Salafi ideology creeps in and turns people against their own heritage, the very heritage that is the reason they are Muslim in the first place.

RIP. So long as Wahabism remains and spreads we can expect more of these attacks. Unfortunately the cradle of Wahabism is in bed with the USA and is sitting on one of the largest oil and natural gas reserves on earth.
