More XBOX2 HD-DVD rumblings...

As you may or may not know, I made A THREAD A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO that outline *some* :) of the stuff I heard and saw during my trip to Dolby Labs last week...

It was brought to my attention Dolby is licensing Dolby Digital Plus(which is a mandatory audio codec for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD) to Microsoft, specifically for use in "a version of the Next generation Xbox console" his words, not mine...

Basically, he was saying XENON would have an HD-DVD ROM drive, which was news to me...

At any rate, I stumbled on a Guardian Unlimited article that talks about the upcoming format war as well as(lo and behold) XENON using HD-DVD!!!:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,3604,1372274,00.html

Although most commentary has focused on films, of equal significance is the hugely lucrative games market. PlayStation 3, the new version of Sony's games console due out by early 2006, will come equipped for Blu-ray DVDs. XBox 2, the latest version of Microsoft's rival to PlayStation, will be released some time next year.

Although publicly neutral on the new format, the software giant would have to spend more to develop XBox to work with Blu-ray. It is expected to be compatible with Toshiba's system.

Note the article is stating Microsoft is expected to use "Toshiba's system" (HD-DVD) in XBOX2!!!

Don't say I didn't tell ya? :D

PS. I find it intresting that Sony approached Toshiba to end a format war but Toshiba told Sony to, more or less, shove it!!!

You would think the joint projects of Emotion Engine *AND* CELL would smooth things over between the two :confused

Also check out THIS little enticing tidbit:

Dreamworks, the studio behind animated hits Shrek and Shark's Tale, is also poised to back Blu-ray, joining Sony's own in-house movie studio and MGM.

Who cares about Hollywood studios... we all know that it's the porn industry that makes or breaks a format :P

Sony, the Japanese electronics and entertainment group, has approached arch-rival Toshiba in an attempt to prevent a damaging format war over their next-generation DVDs. Toshiba, which is preparing to launch its own high-definition DVD player as soon as next Christmas, rebuffed the offer to work together, however, setting in train a worldwide battle for consumers.

Crap, they should've settled on one format, like they did with DVD. Two competing formats will only confuse and alienate consumers, IMO.

They have filters for that stuff. Porn + HD + zoom function = success!
