Morpheus murdered in The Matrix Online...

'Matrix' Saga Continues Online — Without Morpheus

05.26.2005 9:13 AM EDT

Neo's butt-kicking guru met his bitter end in multiplayer game 'The Matrix Online.'

Say what you will about the "Matrix" saga, but don't call it predictable. Who would have expected Keanu Reeves' Neo to meet his end in the trilogy finale? Who would have expected so many fans of the first film to be critical of the sequels? And who
would have expected one of the biggest characters in the movies to be murdered not on the big screen but in the new "Matrix" video game, two years after the movies supposedly put an end to the sci-fi saga?

Wha? Details? I've never heard that story.

In his own words:
OGR: Give us a recount of exactly what happened, from your point of view.

Rainz: The servers had just been taken down to prepare for the huge influx of players for the speech Lord British and Lord Blackthorne were giving throughout Britannia. When the servers came back up, I strolled through Britain with Helios, my fellow guild member. We headed to Blackthorne's castle where the first speech was being given. LB, Blackthorne, and their jesters were up on a bridge orating to the masses. Unfortunately I wasn't playing my mage character, so casting spells from a spellbook was out of the question. Luckily my character was a good thief who had high "stealing" skill. I desperately searched the backpacks of those around me and eventually came upon a fire field scroll. After that it was pretty simple, I just cast the scroll on the bridge and waited to see what would happen. Either LB or Blackthorne made the comment "hehe nice try", can't recall exactly who. It was a humorous sight and I expected to be struck down by lightning or have some other evil fate befall me. Instead I heard a loud death grunt as British slumped to his death. After that it was just pure mayhem, Blackthorne or another force summoned 4 daemons into the castle and people were dying left and right.

OGR: After the deed was done, what was your next action?

Rainz: I hauled b-lls out of the region like there was no tomorrow.

OGR: What has Origin, and Lord British, said to you regarding your actions? Has any action been taken against you?

Rainz: To make a long story short, Origin considered my style of gameplay to be detrimental to the nature of the beta test. I had previously played a character of evil alignment who slaughtered hundreds, this type of role playing was denounced by certain OSI members. After they had a discussion with me I erased my evil "Aquaman" character that same day and nailed his coffin. I thought that this had brought an end to the whole ordeal. Instead, after slaying LB, an OSI member informed me that I had come to the "last straw" and was now banned from "all further Origin World Online games."

Man, you guys were probably too young to remember 1997. It was a different internet. You weren't supposed to attack him, so it wasn't necessary to make him invincible. He just had a whole lot of life. Ditto for the guy getting banned for having the audacity to pull off such a stunt. Now this world is so full of jerks that Origin's actions are considered mean.

More details on the Morpheus thing, for those interested.

He lived his life in search of The One and once he met Neo it seemed his vision
was complete. But, Neo's death brought on a new mission and a mystery - to retrieve
his physical remains from the Machines and bring them back to Zion; why wouldn't
the Machines cooperate?

In a 'Live Events' spectacular week-long adventure in The Matrix Online (co-published
by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and SEGA), "The Hunt for Morpheus"
began with Morpheus' obsession with the Machines not giving up Neo's body. His
rampage began with setting off virus-encoded bombs around The Matrix MegaCity
threatening the very fabric of The Matrix. Machines panicked; he had to be stopped.

The Assassin appeared in The Matrix and he went after the beloved captain.

The final showdown took place in a wastewater plant. While planting a code bomb,
Morpheus noticed a buzzing fly, which disclosed the porcelain-masked Assassin.
The Assassin took shots at Morpheus who managed to escape down a dark alley.
But, The Assassin was able to catch up by bending the rules of the Matrix. In
the end, Morpheus was trapped and even he could not escape the hail of bullets
that ensued.

Unbelievably, Morpheus has been ambushed and killed. It is now up to the players
of The Matrix Online to solve the mystery of this giant cliffhanger.

Pfft. Most text based MUDs were smart enough to make their admins and gods invincible or somehow mute spellcasting/combat in certain areas for various events long before UO was around.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like people constantly being assholes online trying disrupt everyone's enjoyment of the game, but this was just plain stupidity and lack of foresight on Origin's part.

EDIT: Just read the transcript. If he was indeed banned for repeatedly exploiting bugs during the alpha and beta testing, that is understandable.

All is well. :)

Heh, that's because Ultima RPG series > any other RPG series including, well, just about everything from Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Wizardry, Baldur's Gate, The Elder Scrolls etc.

Ultima 7, the greatest RPG of all time...

Time to further the UO trend of this thread.

I can remember first starting to play it I must have been 11 or 12 at the time so long ago heh. My first character was a baker and I'd sit in the bakers in Britain trying to sell bread to people that randomly passed by. I thought 1000g was a lot of money.

Then after many failed characters later I fell in love with theivery. No other game has come close to the fun to be had from stealing things from other players. The best thing about it was how other players started developing backpack layouts and strategies to stop thieves. Being a disarm thief was brilliant. I'd randomly steal something from some1 making me perma grey to them, I'd then go hide for a bit come back target their weapon, they attack me and I'd disarm them and steal it in one swift motion. Of course most people were smart enuff to carry weapons that were too heavy to steal. It was so much fun though.

Then the house camping, thats where i made my fortune, the simple act of running around looking for houses approaching the stage of collapse then when it gets to the day of the collapse sitting there for hours then it disappears and all hell brakes loose. I made 18million in a few hours one day :D

Also the constant fear from getting pk'd made it even more exciting legging it between areas with something on u that u didn't want to loose.

Housing! UO housing was perfection amazed me the stuff people cud design just with the materials around them. UO's huge scope in the way of items made it possible. I dabbled in a spot of roleplaying with the undead's (wore skeleton armour and used the letter s a lot) having big battles with guilds we were at war with, good times. (I have found this to be unique to UO, no other mmo has recreated it or come close)

Then Trammel came along the excitement died and things just steadily got worse :(

ahh that was a nice recollection

The Shadowclan Orcs started in UO. There are Tusken Raider guilds in SWG as well.

I love how only a couple people in the thread even give a shit about the Matrix online and everyone else went out on a Ultima Online tangent. I hated Ultima online by the way. I picked it up like a year or two after launch. Just started a character, never even had a chance to really see anything or get a feel for the game and 5 minutes later was killed instantly by a bunch of archers in some bushes. I had nothing on me, it was pointless. Uninstalled game and never had an urge to play it again.

yeah, that game was a bitch.

ok manabyte I'll play swg heh but only if i can find a free trial somewheres

I don't play anymore. I only have it still installed because it's included in StationAccess, but people make some awesome houses in the game since it's basically the UO housing system in 3D.

There are some Tusken Raider guilds. To wear Tusken stuff you need to be a male human. Basically they all go Rifleman/Swordsman so they can use both the Tusken Rifle and Gafi stick. They live out in the wilderness on Tatooine and act like Tuskens like the Shadowclan Orcs did in UO.

""The Matrix Online" enjoyed strong if not stellar reviews when it was released earlier this year, and is suffering the growing pains of occasional server troubles"

7's are stellar now?

hey mana not to derail or anything but I kinda wanna read up on some of the cooler things like the lord british incident that happend in mmos

is there any sites you know that capture these moments or recount them for future readings

like for instance in WoW its rumored the dark portal in the blasted lands will be a world event that will open a new zone (or an exp) that will only obviously happen once per server one time only, are there sites that have stuff like this on video or pics (kinda like that dude who was caught cyber in EQ2 :lol )

The best are Fansy the Famous Bard in EQ1:
http://www.notacult.com/fansythefamous.htm

And Ceciliantas who was caught cybering in EQII because he forgot to lock his house door and a rogue stealthed in and took screenshots of him cybering. Just do a google search for Ceciliantas and you can find the images.

It's one of the golden rules of munchkin gaming. If it has stats, you can kill it.

Ah, another Thief veteran, (Shadowbane here, aka Early UO 2). Play them well, and it's a great story every time out, ain't it? :lol

Stealing random people's mandrake root before blasting them with Vas Ort Flam, Corp Por, Corp Por in Deceit Level 2 are among the best memories I have of any MMORPG.

Pure theives were the scrubs of UO. :) What made the game truly great was the pvp/pking... before it was ruined. It was such a groundbreaking game though. It took years for the 3d mmogs to even come close to what UO had allready done. To this day i cant think of one that can match scope of the world or the variety of things to do in a game that was released 8 years ago.

I remember reading the UO page even before the beta, and it was so exciting to think about the possibilities. Origin wasn't just trying to take the easy way out (like...say, Everquest), they were truely ambitious and wanted more than just a graphical MUD. Their fuckup was assuming that everyone wanted to play the game the same way, and I don't think they at all anticipated the amount of development that was necessary after the game's release.

The problem with todays MMORPG is that eveything has to serve combat in someway. Theives no longer steal, they backstab etc...

How does a artisan class that just makes house furniture serve combat?

Errr... isn't the entire point of alpha/beta testing to FIND exploits and bugs? One would think that if an exploit was found in beta that end-user players shouldn't be able to use, they woud--y'know--block the exploit. Rather than shooting the messenger.

I used to code for a MUD, and there were a couple players that were my biggest assets because they had a knack for breaking the game.

is that SWG? I guess thats the exception, but my experience is that your class has to have a good combat skill to be worthy of anything in PvP and thats all most people care about.

On a slightly different note, how is SWG these days? I bought it launch day and played it for about a week and stoped. It really sucked back then.

Nothing ever came close to UO, as much fun I had with Everquest and other MMORPGs, nothing will ever be like UO again I think unless they make an updated 3D version of it with the old golden age rules and nothing of this trammel shite.

galeninjapan said:

It's not just SWG. UO had carpentry skills and while they could make and sell shields and staves, they were primarily furniture makers. In games with a player-run economy there will always be those people who just play artisan classes.

There are people who play MMORPGs and never touch a combat class at all.

How cares. If the game had come out around the time of the films then great. But two years on...

How has SWG Evolved anyway?
I bought it at launch, and got my $50 worth, but i've been thinking about trying it again.

Does it still have a sizeable player base, did they flesh out the content?

I don't play anymore, and if I ever log in it's just for space stuff, but they redesigned the combat completely and pissed off all of the afk-macro players, botters, and template stackers so they quit the game because they couldn't macro their classes anymore.

'97ish era UO was truly great stuff. The crafting, guild system, skill system, PvP, world design, housing, ect. You can go on forever.

It's amazing how much shit UO did perfectly that's not cloned in any games at all. Goddamn you, Everquest.

Also, Camelot's RvR wasn't the precursor to WoW's Battlegrounds. It was all about Color Wars back on the Abyss shard (Origins wacky test server) in UO. So much rox.

EA sucks ass.

That sounds like a real shame :D
I might install and give it a shot.. i've wasted $15 in worse ways before.
