Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Playstation 2 version)

I’m going to pass judgment on this game even though I have yet to complete it because I already know that I don’t want to. So if you think that dis-credits this review, then don't read it.

I’ve come to realize something in games, if a game is going to have cinemas, they better be good or don’t bother putting them in at all; because the bar has been raised so high in terms of in-game cinemas/story telling that if I see a crappy in-game movie, it hurts the story, it hurts the pacing and it hurts the over all quality of the game!!!!!

Such a shame, the intro to Shaolin Monks is indeed INCREDIBLY ENTERTAINING!!! In fact, it’s one of the best game intros EVER CREATED; but every other cinema in game sucks and are no where near the quality of that intro. This game needed a bigger budget and it started off well, but doesn’t ever live up.

I’ll be straight forward with this: the graphics SUCK! The character models during cinemas are down right UGLY!!! On top of that, the model for the same character changes in style from scene to scene. For example, the intro movie has one version of Liu Kang (skinny, cool looking), then you have your real-time in-game model (beefy looking dude, that doesn’t look that bad but nothing like the intro model), then the pre-rendered in-game cinema (UGLY AS HELL and doesn’t have the same symbol on the pants).

The music in this game sucks as well. The intro had great music, but that song is never used again anywhere in the game. The music is actually very cheesy sounding and most of the time is just ambient type music that blows.

The gameplay, despite the bad graphics, is actually very good. The whole idea of a one hit kill fatality after charging your combo meter is a lot of fun. The combo system is pretty easy to learn quite fast and works really well. The background elements also add a fun element to the fighting because in some cases you can punch enemies into a spike wall and instantly kill them or knock them off a cliff. On top of it all, it’s 2 players!!! Just wish the Xbox version was 2 players online too. There are puzzles in this game that don’t do anything to make the game better and in fact stop the pacing, so I really don’t like them but at least they are very easy to solve. Games like this should be non-stop action. WHY, WHY AREN’T MORE GAME DEVELOPERS MAKING MORE BEAT-EM UPS??? This genre is really over due for a come back. I just hope some one makes a good one (The Bouncer was too shallow, Urban Reign is only 1 player, and Shaolin Monks has crappy graphics).

GAMEPLAY: 9 out of 10
MUSIC: 5 out of 10
VISUALS: 5 out of 10

FINAL JUDGMENT: 6.3 out f 10

So if this dis-credits this review, then don't read it.

I stopped reading right there... and it wasn't even from the fact that you didn't finish the game.... Regardless of whether I think your review is accurate or not.

you missed the best part though, gameplay got 9/10 but the cinemas were not good so overall 6/10.

Bahaha. 9/10 for gameplay...but 6.3 overall? Incredible.
people don't understand how weighted reviewing works. either that or graphics and sound are just as important to him as gameplay, in which case "graphics whore" stands.

he understands just fine I'm sure, but he also finds it stupid.

Hydro_Alexis:
I want to, but I'm just too busy.

The Faceless Master:
I didn't find that to be a problem. You realize there is a lock-on button right?

borghe:
You forgot that I'm also a music whore and gameplay whore and if all don't work in harmony then it hurts the game. You can't have one without the others. I don't know about you, but graphics, music and gameplay all matter to me equally. I'm an everything whore :)

levious:
Music sucked and the graphics sucked so bad that yes it takes away from the over all enjoyment of the game, CORRECT!

dark10x:
The "rooms" are big enough. Load times are not an issue in Shaolin Monks.

yup

graphics on this game are decent.c´mon ppl this is the only decent double dragon style game this gen

Zer0:
Name a game with worse graphics on PS2? It's the best 2 player beat-up this generation so far, but that's not saying very much because it's one of the only one's out there. How ever, there are far, FAR better single player beat-em ups.

Are you joking? The game isn't that bad looking at all (based on the demo). I could come up with truck loads of inferior looking PS2 titles...

dark10x:
Then come up with 5 titles from your "truck load." In the same repect I can come up with a truck load of games that look better, so what does that mean? I bet I can name more better looking games than you can name worse ones!

Just five? I'll do you several better...

HAHHAHA, wow!!! I don't recognize a single game there, lol. Yes, those look pretty darn bad. I'll admit those look worse, but I still think I could name way more better looking games. I'll go ahead and do that:

Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry 2
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance
The Bouncer
Zone of the Enders
Zone of the Enders 2
Onimusha 3
Resident Evil Outbreak
Twisted Metal Black
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 11
Zillzone
Gran Turismo 3
Gran Turismo 4
Matrix Path of Neo
Viewtiful Joe
Okami
SSX
SSX Tricky

I could keep going for longer than you could name worse games.

...that's not the point.

The question was is this the worst looking title for the PS2... answer... not hardly.

I don't care. This isn't a bloody contest. Nobody expected AAA visuals out of this game, but to make a comment suggesting that they are THE WORST you've seen on PS2 is going way over the top.

The visuals are slightly above average. Some decent lighting, water, animation, lighting, and 60 fps work in its favor. I'm not sure exactly what you feel is wrong with them, but they certainly aren't anywhere near as bad as you are implying.

He's probably talking about the horrendous faces and such in the CG. It's art is bad as the kids would say.
i dont know but the game is looking fine forme, also the animations and little details are very good

DarienA:

No that's not the question. Who asked that? I never said that either. I'm sure there are worse looking games, that's why I didn't give it a score of 0 for visuals. My point is that Shaolin Monks is one of the more ugly games out there compared to whats being pumped out by other game companies this gen. I just under estimated his knowledge of games.

GDJustin:
Tell me why and I might give you said some credit.

Razoric:
Sorry you settle for sub-par graphics.

Musashi Wins!:
The game is fun to play, just not fun to look at or hear (other than the usual well down sound effects from the MK team).

Zer0:
I don't have any problem with the animation during gameplay, but the cheesy in-game cinemas and the poor animation during those really stands out. If you want to see good animation that's pretty wild and unrealistic, look at Devil May Cry 3.

Bataman:
Can't expect everyone to agree, but this game doesn't deserve a high score. People here can't seem to accept the fact that graphics matter too and if you agree with that then this game would rank really low in that department compared to what's out there now. 3 things make up a gaming experience, GAMEPLAY, SOUND AND VISUALS! I weigh them all equally, sorry if this disagrees with the way you view it.

really?

NO WAY!!!

the in-game tutorial didn't mention ANYTHING ABOUT THAT!!!

i'm talking when there are multiple enemies in close range and you want to attack them all so you don't get from the side or back... attacks just whiff for no apparent reason...

The review is horrible because its written really poorly. It seems like a review I would have written in middle school or so. If you're around the age of 13, I take it back. It isn't horrible, and you have a lot of time to hone your craft, etc etc. I'm sure my "reviews" didn't look much better, at that age.

On the other hand, if you're an adult, well... I dunno what to say. I could get into specific phrases/words included that are no-nos in reviews, as well as grammatical errors, but I don't really think that's necessary.

Sorry, but the game is just fun. FUN. The graphics aren't mindblowing, but they are good enough to not take away from the overall enjoyment of the game. When I checked this out the other day I couldn't believe how much fun the game was, not how average the graphics were. When the first thing you start to bitch on is the graphics that is normally when the gameplay isn't up to par. Well, the gameplay is up to par in MK: Shaolin Monks. It's not the graphics that are horrible, it's your "review" that is. Go play Final Fantasy XXXVII or something. At least there you can get your pretty cut scenes and no gameplay.
