Peterborough’s mayor is calling an arson attack on his city’s only mosque a “cowardly act” and says his church and several others are offering worship space for displaced local Muslims. Meanwhile, a crowd-funding campaign has raised more than $73,000 in pledges to help restore the Masjid Al-Salaam mosque following the weekend fire, which is believed to have been deliberately set.

Police and firefighters arrived at the mosque on Saturday at around 11 p.m. after receiving a call of smoke coming out of the building. Peterborough police have confirmed that the fire was deliberately set. “Offences such as this, committed in relation to a place of Worship are taken very seriously and the Police Service will make every attempt to determine who is responsible,” Peterborough police said in a prepared statement. No one was injured, but the interior of the building was heavily damaged. The Kawartha Muslim Religious Association praised the community for its support in the wake of the attack.

Update:

The FBI says threats made against two Tampa Bay-area mosques in the wake of terrorist attacks in France have been deemed not credible.

Threatening phone messages were left Friday night for the Islamic Society of St. Petersburg and the Islamic Society of Pinellas County.

The FBI's Tampa field office spokesman, Dave Couvertier, says the calls came from the same person, who was identified and interviewed over the weekend. Couvertier says investigators found no actual plans to carry out acts of violence.

Hatem Jaber, a volunteer and teacher at the St. Petersburg mosque, says the caller threatened to "firebomb" the mosque and also said Friday's attacks in Paris were "the last straw."

In Florida, two mosques received bomb threats by phone.

“This act in France is the last straw. You’re going to f—king die,” said voice mails received by the Islamic Society of St. Petersburg late Friday night and early Saturday. “I personally have a militia that’s going to come down to your Islamic Society of Pinellas County and firebomb you, shoot whoever’s there on sight in the head. I don’t care if they’re f—king 2 years old or 100.”

A second message said: “I’m a red-blooded American watching the news in France…Guard your children. I don’t care if you’re extremists or not…Get out of my f—king country.”

The FBI is investigating the threat, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

A news release from the Council on American-Islamic Relations reported that another Florida mosque received a similar voice mail that threatened to “bomb the location” and shoot people “at will.”

Other threats

Meanwhile in Orlando, a Muslim family came home from a charity event for the homeless Sunday morning to find a bullet hole in their garage door.

“Just a little bit of a black hole in a beige garage door, when we parked right there,” Amir Elmasri told Click Orlando. “So, it’s in front of my eyes and I said, ‘What is that?'”

It was the result of a bullet that had gone through the garage and into their master bedroom.

The women of the family wear traditional hijabs in public. They, as well as their neighbors, believe they were targeted for their faith.

Michigan police are investigating a Twitter threat made Saturday afternoon.

“Dearborn, MI has the highest Muslim population in the United States,” the now-deleted tweet read. “Let’s f—k that place up and send a message to ISIS. We’re coming.”

More in the links. There are posts in Facebook articles about the Peterborough incident encouraging to burn even more Mosques. I hope the police investigates these threats. It's really disgusting that these are happening.

Shouldn't be surprising after the dog whistles from right wing politicians over the weekend. They're partially responsible for this.

Well, in the quoted article in the OP, we have people threatening to blow up or shoot hundreds of people, discriminate of age. Those are terroristic threats. Do we ignore those comments until someone actually makes good on the threats?
 
Good on the Peterborough community for working to help replace the damage. Helpfully the assholes who burned down a place of peaceful warship within the city will be brought to justice

There are 1.6 BILLION Muslims in this world. If they were all terrorist, we would all be dead.
 
When the Ottawa attack happened a mosque was vandalized as well. Locals came together to support the Muslim community and show that Canada is better than that, and I expect the same here. Of course, this shouldn't happen in the first place. I just want the arsonist to know that it's him and his values that don't belong in Canada or anywhere.
 
The only difference between ISIS and these idiots is fortitude (I really need a better word). Throw them wherever we'd throw an ISIS member if captured. They deserve each other.

No! But at the same time I think we can differentiate people being angry at the situation from murderers killing hundreds to terrorize the world.
