Most daunting games?

Just picked up Makai Kingdom. I have all those Nippon Ichi games even though I haven't played more than 30 minutes of any one.

These games just overwhelm me with how much depth they have. The type of gamer I am, I just know I'll never be able to experience the full game as they were intended.

GT4 is the same way. I mostly mess around with License Mode since it's pretty straightforward. But I'm no car junkie and know nothing about tuning and they're subtle effects so I usually only get about 2% complete.

Any other games with that insane amount of customization and depth that you just humbly put it back in it's case knowing you'll never get through it?

Off the top of my head, PC Flight Simulators

For consoles, I would agree that stuff like Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, and Nippon Ichi stuff is daunting because of the amount of item and personnel management

Star Wars Rebellion

I remember playing this to death when it came out. I found the CDs couple of days ago and installed it again, but the amount of things to do is quite overwhelming. Not having a clue about what to do isn't helping very much either

I was slightly overwhelmed by Jade Empire in Chapter 2, simply because it seemed I had a ton of Quests to finish, and I assumed the entire game was going to be like that.

Boy, was I wrong.

OFF-TOPIC: To people in the states-I'm going up there in a few days, and I'm wondering-what is the price Disagaea is at now? I've never played a Nippon Ichi game because i've never found onw available for rent, and didn't want to speng 60$ on a game I never played.

It's actually really difficult to find in brick and mortar stores at this point at any price

Yeah Nippon Ichi for sure. I started playing Disgaea and it was really cool, but then I got a bit deeper into the game and started doing the item world stuff and transmigration and I was like, whoa.

San Andreas

I made it out to Angel Pines and did a bunch of those missions and then I just gave up because I knew there was still a ton of stuff left to do.

Dragon Warrior VII

I haven't even begun to get stuck into it (something insanely lame like 20 mins on the save) but I know it's going to be an entire shitfest. Any RPG that is over 40 hours long has to be insanely good otherwise I just won't bother.

Falcon 4.0 >_<

The manual is a freaking bible, i bet you could litterally fly a real F-16 after mastering this game :lol

Disgaea et al. Some really cool concepts, but I can't be bothered negotiating through it all. Comments about Makai Kingdom forming a more staid progression/experience does whet my curiosity though.

Oh and Dark Cloud 2. I couldn't wrap my finger around dealing with photography and several other gimmick parts to fully enjoy the parts I do love such as mecha construction and dungeon crawling.

Wargames for bearded gamers win this thread.

Compared to any of of these, the learning curve on console games like Disgaea is cake.

Nippon Ichi games for me, too. I still may have to give Phantom Brave a shot, if only because the dialog looked so good.

NI games never seemed that difficult to me, there's a hard cap of 'max' stats and items you can get. On top of that, there's also usually some gimmick you can abuse to powerlevel your way to the top after you spend 30 min or so figuring out the system.

My vote goes to VF4, or Korean Starcraft/Warcraft.

I can't play RTS and squad-based games to save my fucking life. Someone recommend a virgin's RTS that'll ease my fragile tenderness into the rough stuff. (And, just in-case, I already play and love Pikmin and it's easily my favorite thing out of Nintendo since Super Metroid.)

Edit. Dai Senryaku 7... Its scope arouses me. I could spend a year on a single map if mortal life expectancy wasn't so flash-in-the-pan.

I agree on GT4, or just the GT series in general. I'm not a huge car fanatic either, so the game's setup -- race and race and race just to get a better car -- is what turns me away. It doesn't help that I can't get into GT's brand of driving. If I want to have to drive realistically, I'll go for a spin around the block in my car, not play a video game.

Also agree on VF4... I can't wrap my head around its hidden depth.

Pretty much any Koei game ever that isn't Gitaroo Man or Dynasty Warriors.

I was just gonna say the same thing.

And not that it is so complex but... Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. The boss battles in particular. Some are just easy as pie. However, others like the Matador fight to start with, let alone some of the ones later on in game...

I'm afraid to go further at times, just because I do not want my will to play the game to be crushed evern further.

Daunting as fucking hell, alright.

Add DMC3 to that list too. The boss battles, are real, well... Daunting.

The fact that two people have already mentioned Dai Senryaku VII, even though it sold about 27 copies total, is telling...

Dai Senryaku is daunting, yeah, but you should really see Combat Mission in motion.

Do I want the soldiers to walk, run, crawl, sneak into a house? Oh, wait, the commander's radio is shot, so these guys might not get the orders in time.

It's rough.

If you mean daunting=difficulty I'm gonna go ahead and announce my weak-saucedness and say Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. I pull that game out once a month and still cant get past the first boss. I'm looking forward to Ninja Gaiden Black just to be able to see more of the game.

Though, going with daunting being difficult, I'd say this:

All of the above occurs in 18.5 seconds. The entire song has over 1500 keypresses in two minutes.

Recent generation shumps like Mars Matrix and Ikaruga, I just can not understand the appeal of games that work effortlessly to crush ones ego and self-esteem.

Master of Orion 3 (MOO3). One of my friends is obsessed with the MOO series and he wanted me to try it. Then, he mentioned a 100+ page instruction booklet that's mandatory reading before you play the game. And I'm like, no thanks, I'll stick with shmups and RPGs. =P

Total Annihilation is another pretty daunting game. It's an RTS with hundreds of unique units (plus more you can download) and battles that could easily go back and forth for 5+ hours.

I got lost just trying to sort out the links system in Siren, at times I just had no idea what I needed to do in a level to finally complete it.

Pokémon. Seriously.

Bah, maybe if you wanna catch all the little bitches and then painstakingly train them based on all sorts of obscure variables.. But the core game (gym leaders, etc.) is easy as hell. Though, I usually get bored after that part, so what the hell do I know?

This man speaks the truth. Christ on a motherfucking bicycle. A certain someone I know will spend HOURS hatching BATCHES OF EGGS and then spend MORE HOURS deciphering which pokémon is the most viable of the bunch, and then adds them to another box of other "viables" and decides FROM THAT BOX WHICH IS THE BEST OVERALL TO TRAIN.

He has charts and notes that could make up a Poké-fucking-bible. And the websites. It's absolutely insane.

I could never do that shit, personally. In fact, him going on about it nearly ruined the games for me.

And somehow, I STILL beat him on one-on-one matches. :P

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Just getting one character to the highest rank in quest mode seems like an impossible task, I can't even concieve of doing it with all of them.

Frequency/Amplitude/Guitaroo-man/other modern music/rhythm games. I used to play this genre a lot last generation, but now they've gone way beyond my capabilities. I can't even get Cool ratings in Parappa 2. :/

Nippon Ichi games. As mentioned already, there's just too much. I managed to do everything I wanted in Disgaea, but I ended up giving up on the demon lord titles in La Pucelle.

Gran Turismo 4. After I finish Dynasty Warriors 5 and Tenchu: Fatal Shadows, GT4 is next on my list. I'm scared. ;_;

Dark Cloud 2. It was daunting, but I managed to do everything, including talk to every monster in the game. I'm sick. :X

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Good god the game was huge. I did get 100% in the end.

Ring of Red. Some of the battles took forever, but it was one hell of a game.

And of course...

Nethack. Will I ever ascend? :P

defintely!

i also have maps, guides, charts etc, using training methods passed down from the great sages! taking into consideration effort & individual values, breeding and training the best pokemon i can, it's a very complex and thorough undertaking.

the thought of pokemon diamond and pearl is as amazing as it is daunting!

Ya know what else is daunting to me? That decal editor in Forza. Like most of the games mentioned here it seems damn cool.

But I can't be bothered to figure out layers and pixels and stuff. So I just slap on a premade decal, move it up and down the door and out the garage I go.

It's not actually a game, but Adobe Illustrator. I make it into a game by playing "How long can I try to do what I want before I rip out my hair in frustration?" I swear, working in vector graphics goes completely over my head.

Ever since I was 12 years old ........ brain still hurts day after day.

Great game though :)

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

The Gamecube is gonna get smashed into a billion little pieces the next time a boss hands me my own ass, or I've gotta trek through certain infested parts of the dark world.

Ninja Gaiden - as above but worse.

All RPGs. Don't have the time anymore :(
