Most disappointing athlete (professionally) right now

Who's the *current* athlete you find the most disappointing? Not in a "damn he ran down 3 nuns while snorting coke in his Hummer" way, but as an athlete, who do you think is the biggest bust going? Remember, guys who flamed out and quit or got hurt young (Ryan Leaf retired right?) don't count, only guys who are actually still playing. Bonus marks for guys who actually do have tones of talent but just don't seem to use it rather than guys who got hurt.

In terms of ability and hype versus current performance, here are my picks:

carter1.jpg

Sure he's good (I guess, what do I know), but have you ever seen a pro athlete who looks more pleased to be sitting out? It seems half the time they show Raptor highlights on TV it starts with Vince in a nice suit sitting down joking and laughing. Not only is he an overpaid cancer in his dressing room, but his combination of fragility and apparent happiness to be in street clothes courtside while his teammates go down in flames night after night must just drive the Raps nuts.

DAIGLE!.jpg

Alexandre Daigle. Only now is he settling in as a middling NHLer, but as a former very hyped #1 overall pick who was compared directly to Mario and Bure it has to be one of the biggest disappointments in hockey draft history. The fact he did show signs of offensive flair early in his career but then just disappeared, with his Sens teamates privately labeling him a coward who became unwilling to take a legit hit, a damning indictment in a contact sport. Eventually he retired briefly afting doing nothing to justify his huge initial contract before coming back as a third liner who chips in the odd goal while happily playing small minutes on a mediocre team. Gets bonus marks for claiming he never liked hockey and only played for the money and to make his dad happy when he retired in his mid 20's.

Who else? I don't know football, and for baseball all I can think of is a guy like Kris Benson who has all the skills to be one of the best pitchers around but except for one hot streak this year (which naturally fizzled when he was traded) he's never played close to his potential.

Darius MIles-Got a ton of hype and marketing $$$ coming out of high school...was supposed to be the next KG, but hasn't done much other than being a good role player.

a_griffey.jpg

Ken Griffey Jr.-probably my favorite baseball player of all time. Its a shame how far he's fallen off.

brown.jpg

Courtney Brown-its a good thing the Browns picked him no.1 overall and let Lavar drop to the Skins, cause i haven't heard this guys name mentioned once positively since he was drafted.

:lol Dem I wasn't even going to bring up Bonsignore. Is he still in the ECHL or WPHL or somewhere? I wasn't going to count him because I wanted to list guys who totally failed to live up to expectations but were still playing in the big league (or something close to it).

Ouch, a little early for Kaz Matsui. But as someone who made a big trade for him 3 days into the season this year I can attest to his overrating. :(

He was great last year, but I have a feeling those ligaments aren't going to heal themselves. At least that's what I gather from TSN.

I'd agree with Alexander Daigle.

I remember the Pens signed him a few years back (I think they were the first team he played for when he "came back" from retirement)...I was hoping he would score like 30 goals since he was playing with Mario. I think he only had like 3, though, then was sent down to the minors.

Kris Benson is another disappointment. Number one overall pick, hasn't done much at all. The Mets are paying him like $8 million a year, too :lol :lol :lol

His wife is pretty damn hot, though:

What's that now? Third best save percentage and third best GAA in the Swedish league as of the end of November. I hope to hell he isn't injured!

Mike: you of all ppl should not be talking about dissapointing NHL GOALIES!!!
:lol

Cloutier may not have the most solid playoff record, but at least he'll be able to walk without a fucking cane for the next five years

Note: I don't know if he would still be playing, but:

Anyone who is like "fuck the fans" needs to retire right away.

Bet none of you guys remember this fellow. Like Chandler and Curry, "raw talent" really means 5% chance of becoming a star.

Diop can now be seen throwing down ring dings at the back of the Cavs' bus, while jerking off to King James' latest highlight package.

Maybe if you're not a Raptors fan, but since I've suffered through all but one of the Raptors games this season, I have every right to complain. :)

It is obvious, but why search when the answer is staring you straight in the face?

And finally.....Listen to my man Calder

Bonus marks for guys who actually do have tones of talent but just don't seem to use it rather than guys who got hurt.
Carter has tons of talent and doesn't use it, and he gets hurt...He's a multi-tool guy.

What happened to Kipper? I haven't seen or heard anything about him getting hurt, so I assumed it was just Mike lashing out at the man 2nd most responsible for turfing the Nucks in the first round.

And really the more I think of it I don't see how anyone can argue Vince Carter. If you're in Canada the Raptors will naturally be the first sports highlights on most nights (except the lockout talk ;P) and after seeing him sitting and chatting again it just looks so much like he's happier not playing. Who else in sports gets hurt so easily for a few games at a time and then looks so pleased to not be playing? It's so odd to see a guy not even *try* to look unhappy when he's hurt (and it happens so often) how can his teammates not feel like he just milks minor injuries they'd play through just to get some time off from the hassle of playing?

Potvin was amazing those early years with the Leafs

Our defence was insane as well. Potvin really does take his game to new levels during the playoffs but man he sucked in his alst few years as a leaf.

Why are you disrespecting a legend!

Probably because the cowboy needs to hang up his boots. He's the one shamelessly disrespecting himself hoping a ring's going to fall in his lap on that bench. Just deal with it Karl. Charles did. Then we could put the legend where he belongs, in the hall of fame.
