Thanos is a boring villain. We get almost no character development. All he does is show up and beat up everyone around him with no setbacks.
His motive are dumb AF and his method are even worse.
I find his purple skin and godlike powers more believable that his motivations.
Yes he is powerful but he isn't scary, he isn't intimidating and he isn't even smart.
He is some of the worst thing from the avengers movies for me even if I like the actor who played him.

Joker represents elements of society, such as anarchy and insanity, which we see and understand. He is human and part of the system, rather than someone from the outside.
We cannot relate to other villains like theatrical purple potato man talking about rocks and balance.

Didn't even need to check the results to know Joker would be miles ahead with Thanos a trailing second. It's not even close. The sheer amount of Joker related merch, memes, spoofs etc. that came out of The Dark Knight would win it, let alone the standalone movie later.

TDK Joker, because in this movie he was the perfect villain for Batman.
He was not scared of him, all of Batman's strengths were useless against him and in a way, he even won, when he corrupted Harvey Dent.
Batman had to become this fascist version of himself to beat him by using surveillance technology. Which in a way would have been the perfect thing for a real sequel. Batman keeps the technology and starts to become the real Dark Knight. Bane in the role as some kind of liberator, but like in the French Revolution is even worse than Batman.
In the end, Batman has to sacrifice himself, that society finally can take over again. The state as the enforcer of laws, not some self-proclaimed superhero, and neither a self-righteous liberator.

If you only knew him from MCU movies i can understand
MCU Thanos is heavily nerfed, weak af almost died from scarlet witch and getting hammered down by Capt America with Mjolnir, Marvell comic he can tank Skyfather Odin and Galactus its almost like a different entities

I’m surprised Voldemort doesn’t have more votes. He’s pretty much the biggest villain of the 2000’s pop culture. The books and the movies. Harry Potter is a billion dollar industry.
The Dark Knight Joker would be a very close second for me. Heath Ledger nailed the role as the best Joker and TDK is a perfect film. Joker as an icon? That’s a win for 20th century’s Batman: The Animated Series.

Yeah I only know him from the movies so I will have to take you at your word.
He didn't stand on his own that much and the huge cast means he didn't get that much character development in the movies.
I mostly read Franco- Belgian comics when I was young, superheroes comics aren't really a thing in Europe, at least a lot less than manga in France that's for sure.

Best villain and the best movie of the 21st century.
I'd argue he's the best terminator, since T2, he can't be bargained with, he doesn't feel pity or remorse,and absolutely will not stop, ever, until u are dead
Obviously he's more complex than that, and he has got a code he follows, in his own twisted way
What makes him even more iconic than joker in my eyes, but the joker is still high on the list
