Most Neglected DS Killer App

Pictochat. if this was online, i think the DS would have an explosion of sales. one that would take the DS to another level.

broadband phone is also something Nintendo should really look into. DS acting as a phone would make Nintendo very very rich i think. i know they're all about games and all, but hey, that's not really the case. it's only their priority. after all, they are going to make a film soon. atleast that's the plan. not to mention all the other things they dabble in to bring money in. if gaming isn't going to be the only source of income, why not go after markets that they can definitely penetrate?

using the DS as a communications device, is really something that Nintendo should do.
i think doing this would make DS their best selling portable yet. give it some PDA style applications to boot, and man, the portable electronics market would never be the same. considering what you would be getting for the price.

Dude, I've been waiting for this stuff since the DS came out.
(Probably the reason I haven't bought one yet.)

So much potential.

The strangely staggered first party online releases make me wonder if Nintendo is planning on adding new features from now until Metroid Prime Hunters appears.

For that matter, what if something is being shoehorned into Animal Crossing?

A "Universal Buddy List" is currently possible, as each DS transmits your buddy list TO the Nintendo servers when you try to make a match. If you link your accounts, it should be easy for Nintendo, on the server side, to keep track of your buddies and stats. If they made this universal, upcoming games could use your stored buddy lists -- or inform you, in game, if someone connects.

Pictochat... does anyone know if Pictochat exists in the DS's flash RAM or if it's burned into the ROM? I've heard that it is supposedly entirely located in rewritable RAM as firmware, which leaves open the (unlikely) possibility of an upgrade to a Wifi application. This seems unlikely, though, as accessing that memory generally requires minor hardware work...

I can see Nintendo releasing some sort of "PictoChat Wifi" card AND incorporating that same program into the firmware of new DS systems. The problem is that the market is potentially splintered, and the existing userbase would have to buy the card...

Wasn't there a recent Nintendo interview that kind of hinted that we should 'wait patiently a bit longer' or some such regarding Pictochat? I suspect that the redesigned DS will have a truly online Pictochat... or that even the current DS will be patched with a new one. (If that's possible).

Only one thing is certain: Elektroplankton would be the next Pokemon if only it were given the right push.

While it can be a fantastic killer app for a handful of artistically and musically talented people, Elektroplankton can never have wide appeal no matter what since for the majority of gamers it gets boring after 30mins and you never want to play it again.

he's just trying to make fun of me. although i never said anything about it hitting pokemon like levels. that would just be insane.

anyways, DS SP ending up just being DS Phone, would be pretty nuts.

Pictochat online is a sure thing to happen. Broadband phone on the other hand is less likely, but hey, seeing what Nintendo could do with its Wifi online service, everything is possible. Oh and PDA features are almost a given, I heard french marketing director mention it in a recent interview.

I'm gonna go with Phoenix Wright, though it's hardly a Killer App by most definitions...

It's the game that made me remember how badass text adventures can be, and it's difficult to find games like it these days.

Not too long and there'll only be one game worthy of being labeled Killer App for DS.

Hurry up MK! I have to wait til DECEMBER to get you! Damnit!

Oh come on.. I love this game as much as most people, but you can't claim a game that hasn't even got a release outside of Japan as neglected...

QFT

After the 2nd case I already decided i would insta-buy a sequel.
I'm at the 4th case now, and i'm still loving every second of it.

Pac 'N Roll. Excellent use of the Stylus, very fun. Lots of very basic "puzzles" to solve [basically, "You need this to cross" stuff]. For what levels they have, it uses a very nice physics engine, and explots it [Like the First Level Challenge section]. Needed another 20 levels chucked in for the hell of it, but otherwise, fantastic little game, which is neglected :(

I said it in my review on RPGFan.com, and I'll say it here. Phoenix Wright is the killer app for DS.

Just started the 4th case :-) Great game, loving it so far. But too confidential sales to be called a killer app (isn't a killer app somehow sales related?)

As of now picochat has been absolutley useless to me.

i have never met anyone else who happened to be on it ever.

online though... hmmmm.....

I have several great games on the DS, but Pictochat at E3 is still the most fun I've had with the system, BY FAR. In fact, it's some of the best fun I've ever had playing video games. I would kill, in cold blood, for an online version.

Can I chat online?

Not all games will contain a chat feature. Each individual game developer determines if chat will be in the game and how it will operate.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection games that contain a chat feature will work as follows: "Open" chat is allowed between friends who have exchanged Friend Codes. "Closed" chat may be available during play with others who you have not exchanged Friend Codes with. "Closed" chat means you can select from a set of phrases to send to an opponent but you may not type whatever you want.

One of the great features of the Nintendo DS is Pictochat, which allows players to chat using the local wireless mode of the system. At this time, Pictochat is not a feature of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Keep checking Nintendowifi.com for news of any future uses of the Pictochat feature.

I disagree on Pac n roll, Ithought it was OK, then I tried time trial and I think some tiny bones in my wrist snapped. :( it's to hard to flick the edge of the screen to make him boost. I ended up nearly beating a level and kept rolling off the side of one platform on the 4th or so boost I had to do to come in under time.

That game was a real downer for me and now I'm a bit shy of monkey ball, given how perfect the GC version was.

Put me down for IP telephony stuff, why they havent done this for massive sales is beyond me. Start talking to google dudez. google talk would be the bomb.

also more people should like advance wars. It's the best.

Well...having Pictochat online would be neat I guess, nothing more than that. It's a pain to actually type something with the "keyboard" in pictochat, and using the stylus to write something feels a bit clumsy IMO. So basically, we would have online chatrooms flooded with badly drawn genitals!

PictoChat isn't about typing or writing anything, it's about drawing, and it does a great job of that while keeping the interface simple. If you spend more than two minutes drawing anything on PictoChat, you're missing the point. By far the best feature is the Copy tool, because one person can set up a simple picture and then everyone else Photoshops it for evil purposes. I'm telling you, put together at least four people with PictoChat and they can amuse themselves for hours.

The real reason that you don't see Pictochat or microphone enabled online games is that Nintendo does not want to be held liable for children exposed to profanity, racist slurs, and God forbid, potential online stalkers. By disabling all online communication and making it purely about playing games, they sidestep that entire issue.

Hopefully they will ease their stance, because an optional Pictochat lobby before/after Mario Kart DS games would have been awesome.

or they can just set it up so that you have to have the systems number (pretty much your screen name as far as Nintendo is concerned), and have it be strictly friends only. it's what i had in mind from the start.
