Most underrated game this generation?

AndoCalrissian said:
I'll probably take a lot of flak for this, but... Doom 3.

My initial thought upon reading the thread was Doom 3 as well. I just don't understand the hate this game gets. Yes, it's fairly repetitive, yes it's somewhat samey, but it's also one of the most immersing game experiences I've ever had. Hell was one of the most mindblowing levels in the history of videogames, imo.

Doesn't underrated mean that the game got bad reviews? People here are just listing a bunch of titles that sold poorly.

For me, it would have to be Galleon. It averaged 6's and 7's across the board with a few exceptions. Absolutely loved it and it really makes me hopeful on the next installment of TR.

Secondary consideration: Breakdown. Very cool game that can be hard as nails at time.

Rygar: The Legendary Adventure

a DMC clone done right silly plot and laughable voice acting aside the game had a pretty good battle system, a great soundtrack and amazing graphics.

Quantum Redshift and Sky Odyssey were both amazing games. Curly Monsters was supposed to be making Quantum Redshift 2 Online before it folded :-(

WaveRace: BlueStorm The only real flaw this game had was the fact that it was more of a remake then an actual sequel (waverace 1.5 so to speak) which was a little disappointing. Complaints about the control are pure rubbish IMO. Controls are spot on. The trick is to find the racer that fits the type of control style YOU like and tweak it from there. I don't understand why this was a problem for so many... Anyway. Awesome AWESOME racer. I only hope they put more time into the next one and really expand upon it. Then we may have something truely special.

1080 Avalanche: Another game that could have benefited from more development time. If only for more content. It was short but VERY sweet IMO. Great control. Extremely fast. Excellent courses to race. I think what put people off of this game was A: lack of content (especially when compared to SSX 3, which debuted around the same time), and B: the focus was racing and not tricks. Not that this is even a bad thing (imo of course), it's just that people expected it to play like SSX, and if you go in with that mindset you'll obviously be disappointed. Time attack mode turned out to be a nice surprise.
I was actually very impressed with how well done it was. It actually added another layer of depth to the game and brought back some freshness after I beat the hell out of the main mode. Oh yeah, the avalanches were a great touch. I'd like to see this expanded upon in the next one. :)

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

THE BEST action shooter this gen IMO. Definately deserved more purchases and even higher scores then it actually recieved. I think all of the hardcore gamers here on GAF can agree. :)

Eternal Darkness: Most people either never played or attempted very little of this game and passed it off as a crappy RE clone. Mainly because it started off in a generic mansion. It's too bad, because ED is also one of my favorite Cube games. I absolutely loved playing different charcters through various era's in history. The story was awesome. the magic system was fun, and believe it or not, this game looks fucking fantastic in progressive scan (minus a few areas). An absolutely awesome AAA title that got burned by the gaming public. Some sites like gamespot gave it the score it deserved (9.4 I believe). Others scored it in the 8 range. Some completely hated it for some reason. I happen to think gamespot nailed it with a 9.4. If you're looking for a cheap and great game to play, give this one a shot.

Hell, most of the games in here aren't even close to being overrated. All of you are just picking your favorite games.

As far as real underrated games go...

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (truely underrated)
Obi-Wan (second half of the game is great)

Ridge Racer V. Got many average (sub 8ish) reviews when it came out. Screw those idiots, this game is still the best arcade racer of the generation. Fuck crash-a-tons, the Burnout games fail as racers. Completely.

Wave Race: Blue Storm gets a special mention. :P

Everyone missed the point of this topic.

From Gamerankings;

Bad Examples;

Rygar PS2 82.4%
Eternal Darkness GC 91%
SSX3 92.6%

Good Examples;

Rumble Roses PS2 66%
Circus Maximus Xbox - 64%

Why does Buffy always get mentioned in these threads? It got 8 out of 10 all over the place, and I wasn't all that impressed by it. Buffy felt like Lara and Lara never handled well.

And yeah 1080 is generally underrated and misunderstood. Somehow SSX became the ONLY type of snowboarding game allowed this gen and other more race or sim orientated games were ignored. I enjoyed 1080 more than SSX3 and I like Tricky. I'd put Tricky > 1080 > SSX3 in my book(haven't played much amped), just one track design alone. 1080 had multiple paths and enviroment triggers. People played the duel races and thought that was it when that's not even the meat of the game.

I know there's a better "most underrated" game than 1080, but I can't think of one right now.

Kudos to anyone who mentioned a game or games that came out during the first year of the PS2's launch.
