Jamaican reggae star Beenie Man, who achieved international stardom and infamy with songs that have included violently homophobic lyrics, has come out with a new video.

In the remarkable new clip, Beenie Man (Anthony Moses Davis) literally begs for forgiveness for his past sins, disavowing older songs with lyrics such as "Hang chi chi gal wid a long piece of rope" and "Tek a bazooka and kill batty-fucker".

Beenie Man said: "I respect each and every human being, regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief you believe in, and regardless of which sexual preference you are, including gays and lesbian people," he said:

There is no one in this world is the same as they were 20 years ago – I know I am not. I was a kid and I come from Waterhouse, which is a small community. I never know what the world is like and what the world is all about. But now I know that people live in this world that live their life differently from my life. I still have to respect and love human beings.

With this seemingly heartfelt apology, the self-styled King of Dancehall joins a growing number of prominent musicians – notably in the often swaggeringly macho and homophobic rap world (a generalization, perhaps, but a hard one to refute) – to come out in support of gay rights.

Actually pretty big news? A huge reversal anyway.

I'm astonished what the effect of Obama's endorsement has been on the acceptance of gay rights.

On the one hand it's kinda sad how people need the opinion of a high profile person to do some soul searching of themselves. On the other hand all I can say is "yay!" everytime I hear a "celeb" or organization show their support for gay rights (especially the ones you wouldn't expect).

HOLY SHNIKIES. I never would have expected this. Those island brothas are/were deadset on their homophobia. I remember Janet worked with him on a song and I had to kindly break it to her about the guy's past, and she went and disavowed him because she knew so many gay friends that died of AIDS. Wow.

His lyrics seem positively quaint considering some of the shit dmx has said in the past. As soon as the dog apologises we have really turned the corner.

Ok yeah, sure, whatever, but WHAT ABOUT JA RULE!?

I can't make a decision on gay marriage without at least hearing him out on this issue.

WHERE IS JA!?

you guys who keep making the ja rule joke are missing chappelle's point entirely. rap and hip-hop actually has a history with the issue of homosexuality. this isn't 9/11.

Yeahhhhhhh.

Can't say that I ever thought I'd see this day. Crazy times.

Sports icons are next... wonder how Charles Barkley is going to deal with this.

But at the end of the day, too little too late.

I think you're missing the point. A hip hop artist's opinion has no relevance in serious social and political issues, regardless of how many times he screams homophobic slurs in his music.

I don't agree at all. If it was something like 9/11, then yeah, who gives a shit what a celebrity thinks? It helps no one. It does no good. But part of the reason homophobia is so widespread is because of an accepted environment. The more figures that come out against that, the more it effects people's opinions.

These guys are all late, Based God did it first.

Wasn't there a lot of protest against this guy performing anywhere? Maybe he just changed his mind because it was costing him a lot of money.

guys

i'm comin out in support of gay marriage too

someone make a thread, this is easily as earthshaking as obama and jay z endorsing same sex marriage

Well, he made this statement from Dubai, where homosexuality is illegal so I'm not sure how much it would be hurting him.

Anybody else find it weird rappers are coming out and saying they support this? I wonder why..

Gays and teenage white girls are the only two demographics still paying for music.

That's cynical as fuck and I'm only half joking.
