Living in Vancouver I constantly see film crews buzzing around and getting work done. Later I'll be watching a movie and recognize a particular set or setup that I had walked by months before. I've seen Catwoman, Final Cut, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, I Robot, Rumble in the Bronx, White Noise, etc and recognized loads of the skyline and locations.
First time this happened was while watching Get Carter where there is scene with an internet porn place upstairs or some place. In reality it is a a cool little hole in the wall bar/club called DV8. I also saw them setting up for the ally fight between Stallone and Rourke. There is a load of other Vancouver vistas in that movie especially when Stallone goes up to the rich tech guys office and you see right out into downtown.
Since then I've seen the Vancouver Library used as the cloning facility in The Sixth Day as well as an action set piece in Ecks vs. Sever (that was cool actually as the burnt out cars and damage were sitting out there for a few days) Sixth Day also used GM Place (where the Canucks play) for a police station among other locals.
Recently I saw Blade III. There is a scene where the bad guy has a baby and is threatening to drop it off the roof of a building (really The Bay building). I actually saw them shooting that scene one day while walking around downtown.
Anyway, point being that before that there is a foot chase that leads from the core of downtown to the outskirts and back to the core. It takes them about 2 minutes of screen time to cover what is about 4 kilometers and in a big U shape to boot. Same thing happens in Sixth Day except that Arnold drives about 15 kilometers in between 2 different shots.
For you guys who live in LA or New York or anywhere where movies have been shot does it take you out of the film? Do you notice it? I notice Santa Monica Pier in loads of movies but I haven't been there or know the area enough to know what is right and what is wrong. I keep feeling kicked out of the film and the suspension of disbelief is destroyed when I see this sort of stuff.
