PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
Here is how it will play folks, list a few movies you enjoy, and try to recommend movies to other people that you think they should see given their tastes. And get some arguments/conversations running while you're at it.
LETS DO THIS.
My little DVD collection of favorites:
Clerks
Perfect Blue
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2
Ocean's Eleven
The Wall
Reservoir Dogs
Time Bandits
The Dark Crystal
Dude Where's my Car?

Currently in theaters:
Primer -- Go see this, because I know that there will be a million posts concerning this move next year.
Sideways
Closer
Motorcycle Diaries

Recently out on DVD:
Maria Full of Grace

These aren't my favorites (well some are), but movies I think people should pick up and watch.

Grave of the Fireflies - Saddest movie in existence.
Boiler Room - Kind of a more modern and edgier take on Wall Street.
Iron Giant - An american cartoon with a lot of heart.
The Hurricane - One of the few movies where I think Denzel was actually amazing in. I would have given him an oscar in this over Training Day.
The Beach - I don't know how to explain this well, just check it out.
Life as a House - Not really a great movie, but some of the performances in it are great.

I'm not sure if I'd call Primer lame, while it wasn't the best film I've seen all year, I was impressed by this film considering what they had to work with. I added it to my list because you know that we're going to be flooded with Primer threads when this thing hits DVD, much like the Requiem for a Dream, Memento, etc. threads we get.

I loved Election, I hated About Schmidt. I remember seeing trailers for this film earlier in the year and I didn't think much of it. I saw this a few weeks back and was absolutely amazed at how much I enjoyed it.

It was a great film. Can't say much more about it than that.

The movie that immediately came to mind when I read the topic was You Can Count on Me. Seriously, the most underrated movie of the last ten years.

Fantastic film. Anything with Laura Linney is wonderful, she is an incredibly talented actress.

Rent:
The Celebration- jaw dropping Dogma film that elevate family disfunction to nauseating heights. Audacious and brilliant.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls- the Russ Meyer/ Roger Ebert collaboration from 1970 that features an all girl rock band, pre-Roe V. Wade abortion, a beheading, lesbian sex, and a slew of bizarre and colorful scenarios plus great original music.

Safe- Todd Haynes' second full lenght, a meditation on disease, wellness and 80s Los Angeles is a haunting masterpiece. Julianne Moore brilliant with a quietly restrained yet utterly memorable performance.

In theatres:
Bad Education- Almodovar's latest film and one of his best. A noir picture, Bad Education's doublings and multiple perspectives make for a captivating hall of mirrors in this beautifully shot and strangley sexy movie.

Just out of curiousity, why did you hate About Schmidt? In my opinion, while I love them all, Payne has gotten better with each subsequent film. Citizen Ruth < Election < About Schmidt < Sideways

As for recommendations, here are some of my favorites off the top of my head (grouped by director):

Stephen Frears: The Grifters, Dirty Pretty Things
Todd Haynes: Far From Heaven, Safe
Danny Boyle: Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later
Terrence Mallick: Badlands
Mike White (writer): The Good Girl, Chuck and Buck
Todd Solondz: Happiness, Storytelling

Man, I just did not like this movie. Most of it was just absolutely absurd...and not in a good way. Plus, I found the editing really distracting. There are so many cuts that I was literally dizzy after just a few minutes of one of the party scenes.

We aren't getting Bad Education here in Seattle until December 22nd (same day as Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement), but I'm very excited to see it.

I'm not sure why I disliked About Schmidt, it just didn't sit right with me.

Nevermind, I shouldn't un-recommend those. Just be wary of Minotauro recommendation of Happiness and 'Chuck and Buck'. Both movies can be very disturbing.

Heh, yeah, I guess I should've mentioned that those two require a strong discomfort tolerance level.

EDIT: edited to include Tabris's edit.

Donnie Darko
Garden State (in cheap theatres now and soon to be on DVD)
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Ichi the Killer
The Royal Tenenbaums
Suspiria
Brazil
Freaks (the original 1932 version)

there that's a collection of film you probably wouldn't normally see listed together.

Donnie Brasco
Hoop Dreams(documentry)
Nick of Time
Duel

These aren't necessarily my favorites, just ones that I liked that I don't hear people talking about much.

The Five Obstructions: This is an absolutely brilliant film by Lars von Trier. I think it is available to rent now.

Sunrise: Silent Hollywood cinema at its best, with a touch of German Expressionism!

The Man With a Movie Camera: Think there's too much editing in films today thanks to MTV? Vertov OWNS MTV. :lol A loveable piece of self-reflexive cinema.
