Movies that let you down

I was watching a terrible werewolf film with Kevin Sorbo earlier today, and it got me to thinking about better werewolf films. The strongest one in recent memory that I'd seen was The Wolfman in 2010.

When it was first announced that a remake of The Wolfman was coming, I was pretty excited. I mean, werewolves are awesome. And then I read that Benecio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving were cast. A great cast. The trailer was awesome.

However, when I went to watch it, it was... disappointing.

The film looked gorgeous, the cast was fantastic, I loved the transformation and what Del Toro looked like as the Wolfman, and I loved the second act, but the whole pace felt really off, and the final confrontation left a lot to be desired, and I left the theater feeling... empty. I haven't seen the film since I watched it in the theater, and I read that there's an extended cut that restores 17 minutes, so I'll probably check it out to see if it's better. I wish there was more of Lawrence going crazy and the rampage in London. Loved the trippy dream sequence and everyone's performances. But at the end of the day, the film... felt hollow.

Another film I was excited about, but was an even greater disappointment, was The Black Dahlia.

I was expecting something in the vein of LA Confidential, one of my favourite films and one of the best films of the 90s. The director was good, Brian de Palma, it had a great cast, and again, interesting trailer. But unlike the Wolfman, which had some redeeming features, The Black Dahlia...

fucking sucked. It was a terrible film. To this day, my friends still complain that I have a shit day in movies cause I dragged them to The Black Dahlia.

So what movies were you guys excited for based on concept, those involved, stuff like that, and then after watching it, you just felt disappointment?

Truly a movie of the fray, wading between being an okay film and an absolute atrocity. It's a character study, without any study. The atmosphere and attempted nihilistic attitude set up such a strong metaphorical theme that is torn down piece by piece by the cringe-worthy dialogue, awkward pacing, and cornball emotional outbursts. The wolves not only look terrible, but behave in such an illogical manner that they might as well have been designed by J.J Abrams. Oh and then there's the ending.

Didn't the Wolfman have a director switch after filming began? That never works well. Plus, there was a contoversy over them canning the practical transformation effects, which I think they'd shot, for the cgi.

Oh, and Superman Returns.

Public Enemies

Michael Mann turned a film about bank robbers in the 30s into one of the most boring things ever captured on film. CGI Depp was the icing on the turd cake.

I LOVED Pirates 1 since I've loved Pirates since I was a kid. That movie is up there with Terminator 2, Matrix etc. for me. Pirates 2/3 were so bad that I haven't even seen part 4 yet and probably never will.

Forreal. The only scene I liked was Depp in the theater at the end.

Oh and agreed on Black Dahlia and Wolfman.

Brian De Palma has fell off so bad recently. Black Dahlia should have been his return to grace though. Blah.

And Wolfman had a great cast (though Hugo Weaving is kind of annoying these days) but it would have been so much better if Mark Romanek stayed on board, would have been a really cool horror flick. With Joe Johnston you just get typical shit.

edit: Drive

I was expecting some awesome Thief homage. And it did start that way and I really liked the opening 10-15 minutes because of it. But it quickly just fell apart after that for me.

Loved the style and cinematography and it started out great, but I felt it took a turn for the worse after the
motel
scene, and it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Joe Johnston. Any film he produces turns to shit at some point.

I would have to go with the first one that popped into my head and that was Reign of Fire. I remember looking forward to that movie so much when I first read about them starting production on it. It had fucking dragons, how can you fuck that up? And the promotional material started being released showing this awesome battle with helicopters fighting dragons above the skies of London. Matthew McConnaughey jumping off a tower with a big ass ax flying toward a big ass dragon. And the film we get turned out to be complete shit. Terrible.

I loved 2 & 3 and still found 4 to be incredibly stupid. Avoid it.

The Matrix Reloaded

I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.

Add Neo flying away and what an amazing way to end a movie. So many possibilities. Instead Reloaded happened and Neo turns into someone who needs everything spelled out for him. It also ends with a cliffhanger that really isn't one.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Evoked no emotion from me whatsoever.

I think this is the best I've heard anyone describe that film. After all the praise it got on GAF, I saw it and was just...unmoved one way or another. I didn't hate it. I didn't enjoy it. I found it utterly forgettable.

He's trolling but still Inception probably does belong there. It's fun (for the last third of the film) but it's also wasted potential and the setup is so boring.

edit: I like how the movie spends so much time trying to make you feel for the Leo character when the emotional centerpiece ends up being Cillian Murphy. The vault scene is the best in the film forreal.

Holy shit! I bet you're fun to see movies with.

I get the Blade Runner mention, Lawrence of Arabia runs a bit long and could have been cut into an even greater masterpiece IMO. Oh and neither Inception nor Dark Knight hold up in multiple viewings.

I got it on Blu-Ray this past holiday, so I'm going to have to go back and re-watch it. I remember it being a really exciting and engaging movie. One of those movies where you just get sucked into the world, and you aren't let go until like 30 seconds after the movie ends.

The wolfman let me down too, OP.
It just wasn't as awesome as I imagined it looking at the box art.
I don't feel like it was a total waste of my time, but it could of been soooooo much better.
But, got it at a video rental store closing sale for $2, so I'm not too bitter.

This is one of those threads where we just post other GAFers' favorite movies right?

Oh, and Inception is worth it just for the sound alone. Love watching my speakers move when I have it on. :3

The sound design is indeed phenomenal, a lot of people neglect to realize just how incredible it is.

Need to work on your trolling.

Edit: I take it back . . . you got several to bite.

It wasn't complete crap but I really don't like the way they rewrote the story to have a love story between the main character and the preacher guy. That was just stupid. They took a Jerry Falwell character and made him into some Matthew McCounaghy (sp?) stud-boy. WTF?

Inception holds up to me. Aside from how aimlessly the
Snow Fortress
action stuff is shot, the movie did the trick the second time around. On the second viewing the planting of an idea was secondary to emotional journey Leo's character takes. That stuff is tragic considering what the dream machine is capable of doing.

I've found myself watching parts of it on HBO, and having to remind myself to do somethin else before getting sucked in again.
