MS Japan: "We will beat Sony (PS3)"

Japanese Xbox chief Yoshihiro Maruyama has confirmed that the company's next-generation console, the Xbox 360, will launch in Japan this December - and predicted that the company will beat Sony on its home turf this time.

Speaking with the press in the Far East, Maruyama said that "we will enter the Japanese market around December," placing the launch date in Japan a few weeks after the expected October/November timeframe in North America and Europe.

Japan has so far been the toughest market for the Xbox, and Microsoft has largely failed to capture the imagination of Japanese gamers with the console - which is vastly outsold in the region by both the PlayStation 2 and the GameCube.

Next time around will be different though, according to former Square executive Maruyama - who told journalists that "this time, as well as launching first, we have focused on designing the machine and the games for the Japanese market."

"We expect to win," he concluded.

I expect lots of :lols in this thread.

Anyway, sorry if old I searched for "Japan" and found nothing. But it can't be old if it's today's news, can it?

The only reason all of those Japanese developers are more willing to jump on board the Xbox this time around is because they want to have the opportunity to expand their business in America, a market which is still growing. Japan is as saturated as it's going to get, so the only way companies like Tecmo or whatever can get more money out of games is to invade America, and the Xbox 360 will be a hit there.

Too bad Microsoft doesn't realize this.

If I were a betting man I'd say no way in hell. But I also expected PSP to rape DS and look how that turned out.

The only way they have a chance in hell is if one of those 360 devs creates a game so amazing that everyone will have to buy it. It will not sell on "teh new system!", "we are first!!!!", etc

There has to be a killer app and I don't see random, nameless RPGs doing it. We'll see though.

And I will be president of the United States of America in the next election, even though I am canadian (thanks to Schwarzenegger that will (or has?) successfully proved that a law that prohibit foreign-born americans of becoming President is unconstitutionnal).

HAHAHAHAHA

What kind of weed do they have in Japan? It must be some strong stuff.

MS has shown off two games aimed that the Japanese so far. TWO. And they expect to do well?

Good idea brainiac, I hope for MS sake that this guy gets more then one "Duhh" moment every four years.

he's just setting his goals really, really high. Nothing wrong with that, imo. Xbox 360 will do much better than the Xbox did in Japan, but it won't topple the PS3 there. The only way, and I mean the *only* way Xbox 360 can take the lead in Japan is if Microsoft buys Square-Enix and makes all its games exclusive to its own platform (assuming all the talented developers stay on board).

?

"Winning" would mean beating the PS3. It's not a direct quote, sure, but the implication is pretty clear.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you somehow?

Setting goals high, wtf? This is propaganda, lol. I thought Saddam's war spokesman was captured already.

"$2 billion dollar deficit, what $2 billion dollar decifit? The mighty General Gates has led our company into the promise land. Of course we're making money!"

Well, admitting you were wrong iis the first step in overcoming a problem.

They got it so badly wrong with Xbox 1 that they need to learn that the "what is cool for the US is cool for Japanese" attitude that they seemed to go with for the JP launch was just a shambolic bumbling mistake.

It'd be funny if the PS2 got a big price-cut and outsold the 360 in Japan up until the PS3 comes out.

It would outsold X360 even without a price cut after the launch week.

no.

"expect to win" is not what the title of this thread says.

nevermind someone expecting to win is NOT calling out a guarante to win.

There's simply not enough bandwidth on this board to handle the amount of :lol smilies it would take to properly eximplify how hilarious that statement is.

I think selling more than a million units would be considered a "win" for MS Japan. I seriously doubt he meant "we're going to outsell PS3 in Japan."

Then don't "quote" it next time if you feel the need to change it instead of, you know, use quotes as they were intended.

Hmm, I get it but going from "We expect to win", through "We expect to be #1" to "We expect to beat Sony [to be #1]" isn't a big stretch. That's pretty logical, I mean who is #1 in Japan now?

JoshuaJSlone said:
Is that really such a stretch? Wouldn't lifetime Japanese Xbox sales have to be more than doubled to match PS2's first week sales?

This post just has to be a sobering thought for MS.

They will probably beat sony in terms of growth from previsous generation...maybe. Japanese gamers can be quite fickle though and it may only take one game for them to ditch ps3 and choose 360, but what that game is I don't know.
