MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

It is true those pictures were altered, but there still is that big a difference at LEAST. I have both the SD and HD-DVD (toshiba HD-A1)- It truly is night and day.

wow, a huge difference.
So huge, in fact, one would wonder "why do i see such a big difference, since the pics are barely SD size ?". I mean...there's no way you could see a difference between a 480p and a 720p source, in a 620x450something picture...and you probably noticed there's a huge difference in colours and contrast too; which has obviously nothing to do with the source being SD or HD.
So i investigated further and noticed for some reason, the tv speaker is also much sharper in the hd example...
Sharpening pics and adjusting contrast to make the hd dvd look better...oh, the things teamxbox guys would do...

It's probably the same guy who did these 360 rr6 to PS3 rr7 comparison shots:lol

of course, i don't doubt there's a huge difference between dvd's and hd dvd's (in fact i'm placing an order for the X360 add on right now :D ) but altering pics to make the difference more apparent in such a low res photograph is just low : )

add-on for $159 at circuit city? YMMV

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=749155

Apparantly, some people have had luck with a printed coupon getting $40 off... that's f*cking crazy... I already have an HD-A1, but since I don't have an Xbox 360 I'm not gonna shoot for this add-on for now...
Thanks. I might give that a shot if any of the CC's here in town get them in stock. I'm still waiting on my Amazon order. *impatiently taps foot*

could someone who has the HD DVD + KK , tell me if thats the same image?

because on my PC it doesnt look as good as the pics , but in fact , not that much better than a DVD .... (its the 720p demo)

kinda worried

I'm not really sure what you mean. the WMV is nowhere near as well encoded as the HD DVD. The WMV is deliberately compressed to make it a feasible download, not to retain IQ. They're not anything like each other.

I have KK and it looks absurdly good.

well but its supposed to be a HD DVD trailer , not a HD trailer , its for promotional use so i though it was almost the same quality

Can anyone answer this question for me...

How is the HD-DVD player hooked up to the 360? Does it need its own power source as well or does it simply get its power through the 360?

It has it's own power source. It's hooked up via usb.

Just picked this up tonight. Traded in some 360 games so I got it for $130 after tax and I have to say it was well worth it. Tonight is definitely movie night at my apartment...

I just got done watching The Last Samurai (very impressive) and now its Fear and Loathing. I also picked up Happy Gilmore (which is probably not a great choice for HD, but I didn't have it on DVD yet). Anyways, I love the picture quality and the menu layout, etc.

it is only 6.5Mbps and likely not hand-tuned, so no it is not the same quality

I was just reading somewhere there is a hack to get the xbox hd-dvd drive to run on a computer...any truth to this?
Not possible. There's a hack to upscale DVDs. That's it.

HD signals actually do have much better color than NTSC does. I find the color improvement to be just as striking as the resolution increase. The higher quality color is especially apparent when I'm watching a sporting event. The standard def broadcast looks almost monochrome in comparison.

We just hooked up our 360 HD-DVD player and did some comparisons between HD-DVD and standard DVDs. Sure enough, the color improvement was dramatic. Both players are connected with component cables and go through the same receiver.

I hope you enjoy your player when you get it. :)

How big is that Circut city $40 dollar off coupon in reality? what kind of paper/printer Resolution will most approximate it on a inkjet? should I print both sides just to be safe.Man I'm cheap!

I was able to print a copy of the coupon and have them retroactively apply the discount. This DVD player ****ing rocks, hopefully it will continue to get a decent level of support!!

For the Batman Begins HD-DVD owners, is the quality of the transfer this good?
Even though I’m "teh bias" when it comes to this, the movie does not have crappy resizing artifacts ;)
(seriously though, it looks stellar).

Damn for $160 I'm almost ready to make that jump.

Esp. for Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Shit, I guess if I have this and a PS3 I can ignore the format wars?

My 1080p set arrives tomorrow. I don't know what to do. =(

Give the 1080p set to me and just watch normal DVDs on your current TV. Everybody wins.

Hell my old 65" 720p/1080i set is going in the hot tub room so none for you.
Well, if you take sex and drugs out of the equation I think that getting crushed by a 65" TV while in a hot tub is pretty much the best way to go.

thread derailment total. :p

my drive should arrive tomorrow. can't wait to test it out. sadly i do not have the disposable income two paychecks would warrant my household to upgrade my only 1 year old set.

I don't know if its been the shitty weather or what, but I've yet to receive the 4 HDDVDs I've order from amazon and its pissing me off (>__<)

so at this point, the only pleasure I've had with the medium, has been King Kong. Though I should be receive Slither from Netflix in the next two days....

what the **** is this ****ing ****shit. i want this goddamn hd-dvd player, why can't i pre-order on amazon.de even though it's supposed to be out in ten days? why are all the swiss retailers still listing this as a 2007 product. SOMETHING'S FISHY HERE! WHAT IS GOING ON?

I have a question. Does anyone know how long the remote and King Kong will be backed in. My gf told me she would get the player for my Christmas present and I would probably buy KK and the remote as well. Should I tell her to buy it now or would she be ok waiting until closer to Christmas?

Dvd town review:

I'm guessing that Microsoft is somehow converting the data to the Dolby Digital datastream and that a majority of the improved sound resolution is making its way to the receiver. This somewhat waters down the statement that the Xbox 360 is handicapped by not fully providing Dolby TrueHD, but it is indeed doing something. DTS seems to be converted to Dolby Digital as well, as selecting DTS on "Æon Flux" resulted in the DTS mix being displayed as Dolby Digital on my receiver. Still, comparing the DTS mix to the Dolby Digital mix exhibited that there was a slight audible difference. At this point, I'm willing to bet that Microsoft converts either DTS or TrueHD to a Dolby Digital datastream before shipping it out the optical cable. Sound is very good from the unit and I was surprised at the TrueHD handling, but I still give a slight nod to the Toshiba, but this shows that the Xbox 360 is a very capable unit, even with lesser connections.

...reason I quoted this is because I was able to also select TrueDolbyHD when watching Batman Begins and noticed an immediate improvement :)

what better material to try out your new HD player than a movie from the Stone Ages. I bet that mono audio sounds awesome on your Dolby 7.1, too.
