MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

for those interested in a toshiba hd dvd layer, I found them for 368 dollars shipped...was going to get the 200 dollar 360 one, but now may spend the extra money and just get full player.

from AVS - a guy with standalone player AND 360 add-on. useful comparison.

I just picked one up from Gamestop near my office. Walked in and saw 5 unpacked brown boxes behind the counter and 2 boxes opened with bubble wrap still hanging out. Asked it he had any Xbox 360 HD-DVD drives and he paused and then said yes. He had 2 that just came in. Went to the back and grabbed one for me. He was keeping the other for himself he said. Didn't asked if the pre-orders were fulfilled or not, so don't know if the store had only 2 or 2 after pre-orders were fulfilled.

Mine came with the Drive, Remote, and King-Kong HD-DVD. No upgrade CD though. However, it downloaded the driver when I logged into Xbox Live. I have both my xbox 360 and my Toshiba A1 hooked up to my Sanyo Z4. The Toshiba is hooked up via HDMI and the Xbox 360 via Component. Comparison wise, both looked fantastic. I honestly couldn't tell a difference in PQ between the two players. Even though the Toshiba is HDMI, Xbox 360 is Component, it looked just as good as the Toshiba A1. If I'm able to get another King Kong HD-DVD and do a true A-B comparison with both playing at the same time, I will let you know then if I can tell a difference. So those with component, enjoy the marvelous detail of HD-DVD.

On a side note, the Xbox 360 load time is night and day faster than the A1. Took literally 5 secs after inserting the disc before it began playing. I'm seriously considering using the Xbox 360 HD-DVD as the primary player in the theater room now just for load times. However, I would lose TruHD Sound. Oh the dilemma!

If you like Firefly, then Serenity in HD is a must-have.

One that is definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of classic cinema is Adventures of Robin Hood. I hadn't seen it until I got it in hi-def, but it's a really good film from the 30's, and I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Can't wait for Casablanca next week.
 
Why? I have a dvd player... and soon I will have a blu-ray player w/ hdmi. The hd-dvd player can't be used for games nor has hdmi, and costs too much. Why buy a third way to play movies? No sense.

You want to spout off like others have, then wait until a member starts a thread that asks that question. You are blatantly trolling those in here that are very comfortable with purchasing this. I might purchase one after Christmas but as it stands now, I have way too many actual games to buy instead. That's a good problem to have though. :D

The drive is really quiet and the movie looks amazing! However as you guys can see I suck at taking photos. So I'll leave the screenshots for someone else.

All these glowing reviews sent me to the gamestop to pick the beast up...

And they dont effing have it. Best buy still lists it as preorder, so where is everyone getting it at?

Side note *at least they had the wii up and running and i got to give it a shot*

I just called my GS. They did not get it. Two days in a row. DAMN. They told me tow days ago they would have it the next day. Not yesterday. Not today. WTH!! Did anyone get it from a GS or EB?
 
Just got mine too, really easy to setup. The movie looks amazing, running at 720p, that is the native resolution of my TV.

I tried a regular DVD, but it downscale the screen to 480i, unless I'm doing something wrong, it does not up scale to 720p or 1080i/p over component.

Yep, that's unfortunately how it's working.
How stupid is that? You can watch a true 720p movie over component (and thus I could easily capture/reencode it with my HD capture card), but you can't upscale a DVD that anyone out here can rip in perfect quality with his PC. Brain dead it is.

Another thing regarding the question of putting a 360 game in the HD-DVD drive, I don't think is going to work. I haven't tried personally, still looking for a place for the drive in my entertainment center, but the HD-DVD comes with an update that makes the 360 recognize the drive, but another thing it does is in the dashboard, the circle to open and close the tray, it divides it in two, top half to open/close the 360 tray and the bottom half to open/close the HD-DVD tray.
