MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

AlanHemberger said:
Yeah, no call from Aeris. Although I've never received a call from them.

Uhhhh, that kinda scares me. No one at the Gamestop seems to be too knowledgable about it so maybe the release date really isn't solid. ****, I hope that's not the case

..like I said before...this release seems really low profile =/

I honestly think they're underestimating pent-up demand. HD owners want HD content. A $200 player with a remote and a killer-app freebie (King Kong, whether you like the film or not, is a great way to play with image quality assesment and audio) is a FREAKING BARGAIN if you already have a 360.

It also mates nicely with the downloadable movies. I can rent the 720p WMV for a few bucks and if the movie is great, I can buy the HD DVD.

****in A

My friend Rudy picked his up today. I asked him to review it in 1 word and he just said "Man..."

So movies will still look amazing in 720p right?

That is my big thing. Sucks that I can't up-convert normal dvds though. But a stand alone HDplayer that up-converts would cost me near $600 so I'm not doing that.
Normal dvds don't look bad to me now, but I would like to be able to see what movies look like at a higher resolution.

Anyone know if the PS3 will up-convert dvds??

Ru--dy! Ru--dy!
..
only 10 more hours for me to get off work... and check out myself...!
23 hour work stretch sucks..! :(

ho boy yes. Both my TV and projector are 720p and HDDVD looks FANTASTIC on my projector.

You got the HD Drive? Or a standalone?

had a Toshiba HD-A1. sold it and am now waiting impatiently for the HDDVD add-on

My comment was about HDDVD generally, not the performance of the Add-on. one advantage of the US getting it first is that if its not up to snuff I can cancel and buy a standalone.

So what happened to the rumor that they were releasing a HDMI port on the 360. The HDMI should easily enable upconverting regular DVDs.

my eb told me yesterday they'd possibly have this in today, but maybe tomorrow. got a call from Aeris about gears last night but not the hd-dvd drive, but i've has stuff come in before that Aeris didn't know about.

i'm fully expecting to have to make my third trip to eb in as many days tomorrow.

i'm not complaining though. if it isn't in yet, i guess i'll just play Gears of War all night.

i think i'll manage :)

I've called 3 EB/Gamestop's this morning within range and they've all told me tommorow... I'll probably try Fry's tonight, but it's looking like tommorow for me so far! :(

No HDMI (yet or soon) and the 360 already upconverts DVDs thru VGA and will do the same with the HD DVD drive. The advantage of using the external drive to play regular DVDs is that it will be much quieter (and reduce wear on your precious console).

so it's totally confirmed i can play dvds in the new drive? nice.

called Gamestop today and said they should have them in this late afternoon....pretty much only people getting one are ones who preordered :)

my eb said 'well they're only sending them out to stores with preorders and no one has here'. i'm like... i did. they looked on their system and found my preorder, but it doesn't fill me with confidence.

after that song and dance they said 'friday'.

which makes me suspicious too... but who knows what eb are playing at lately with all the gears of war nonsense.

seems like a small feature, but that's actually pretty damn cool to me. So basically, it's like having a 2-disc movie/game changer (as long as it's not 2 games at the same time)?

Gamestop told me they had no idea now. The lady I spoke to said she expected it today and that it didn't come and now she has no idea. She's hoping it comes in tomorrow but she told me "I wouldn't hold my breath now."

Gamecrazy said the same thing. no sign of it yet. ANYONE seen on yet?

FWIW - a few people on Amazon have said that they've gotten the "preparing for shipment" notification today. There are a lot of other people that said they pre-ordered weeks ago and their status hasn't been updated. Sounds very hit or miss.

Ebgames.com shows usually ships in 24 hours, hopefully mine will ship today *crosses fingers*

edit- sweet my order is processing now, hopefully ill have it by friday.

Any idea on the length of HDDVD warranty? If it's only 90 days like 360 I think I will wait and get it from Costco.

You can get the low-end gen 1 Toshiba player for around $400 now.

Supposedly yes (via HDMI)

I gotta tell you, don't even bother asking the 16 year old kids they have working at EB and Gamestop these days about when this thing is coming out.

I went to the EB Games in Perry Hall, MD about an hour ago. I asked the kid behind the counter (I say kid because he looks like he just hit puberty) is the Xbox 360 HD-DVD was in. I'm not kidding about this; the kid looked at me with the blankest stare I've ever seen before and said "HD-DVD drive??". I said "yeah, for the Xbox 360??". He then proceeded to go to the computer to look it up, as if wouldn't have seen it come in today or even knew what the thing was.

After about a minute he actually looked at me and said, I crap you not, "I don't even see that in the computer" and started to look around the store as if he was trying to figure out what this thing was.

At that point I said "You know, nevermind. I'll look elsewhere", and headed out the door.

This is why places like EB Games and Gamestop are going right down the toilet.

Actually you can get the low end gen 2 player for $450 on preorder. They are coming out in a week or 2.

Not every employee can know about every single game or piece of hardware/accessory that comes and goes through the store. Only reason he couldn't find it is because they took the sku out for preorders.

All we know is, it ships today. Probably won't get it until tomorrow or Friday. I preordered it the first day we could on it so I'll be getting it also. Hopefully it comes atleast by Friday, tomorrow would be great since I open and leave early. Hell yea, GoW, HD-DVD drive, and my new netflix movies all tomorrow would be fantastic!!

Really? To not know about a major accessory made by Microsoft is ok these days at these stores. This isn't exactly a 3rd party memory card we're talking about here.

I guess times have changed from when I worked for EB many moons ago. :/

Did MS ever give an exact date when it would release? In fact, the preorder along with the date it would ship out was taken out of EB/GS' system like 1-2 wees ago.

Look at the entire mess with GoW, and I would say that is major game.

So what are you guys buying once this does officially drop in stores...

For starters I'm picking up:

Batman Begins (First movie I'll be upgrading to from DVD)
Corpse Bride (Heard it's a great reference piece to show off those HD sets)
Mission: Impossible III (Never saw it in Theaters but looks like another great movie to show off the player.

I stopped by the local Gamestop and got the typical "This is why you should preorder your games and accy's from us" schtick. Looks like major retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit will have there's around the 16th.

afaik, MS never announced an official street date for the drive. Just lots (or all) the retailers have had Nov. 7 or 8 as the date.

I don't want to know what the secret behavior tracking monkeys at Netflix think of queue.
If this does ship today, then I'm all set for Syriana, The Last Samurai and Grand Prix.

But to not even know what it is? Come on. If he told me "We really haven't been given a release date yet", that's fine. To look at me like you don't even know what it is?

And how is it that some other stores are saying they were expecting it this week as has been reported in this very thread? Again, we're not talking about an obscure little Nintendo DS accessory from Nyko.

I got one! Not from retail, but mine has shipped apparently (Gamecrazy) so huzzah.

Quick unscientific impression from 1080p Qualia projector and component 1080i on Bourne Supremacy. Qualia interlaced to 1080p perfectly over component. Effectively true 1080p image (for film material). Image about 100 inches diagonal.

AWESOME. Crisp colors, amazing detail. Lovely, lovely lovely. I LOVE HD. Nice retail packaging - as compact as the 360 box. Batteries and usb cable and remote included. Audio was 5.1 Dolby, you know. Sounded great. Startup was fast - ten seconds maybe? Really cool use of joystick if you don't use the remote and HD DVD nav is lovely - realtime overlay above image lets you select or use any disc feature while movie continues to play.

Sound - quiet. 360 is quieter and drive is very hush hush while playing. Tested in office with noisy AC but seemed almost silent. Will test again tonight in creepily quiet house. PEACE!

Did I say AWESOME!?
