MS: Xbox One 40x More Powerful Than 360 with the Cloud, Only 10x Without the Cloud

I must be living in opposite world. A reveal with no gameplay, only cutscenes. A claim that the XBone is 40x more powerful than its predecessor? Special Sauce only for the XBone? MS is pre-ps3 Sony confirmed.

All I'm getting is infinite 'clout' regarding this infinite cloud business.

It actually works out to be 4.8Tflops. Xbox One is 1.2Tflops, if that is 10x more than the 360, then 40x is 4.8Tflops. Lofty claims which lets be honest, are most probably absolute BS lol.

it's going to be a lot of computation on typically neglected things, which is what is really interesting to me

Ok MS, so what happens if there is a cyclone that shit up the cloud? is there a cloud backup somewhere?

Microsoft has redundancies and backups

Does this cloud stuff mean a developer could have a xbox MMO and use MS's servers for everything instead of doing it themselves? That could mean something I guess.

They've been talking about how it can improve AI, but I don't see how it can improve graphics. 1-10 MBps is quite a bottleneck for graphics management.

Seriously guys, this shit is just shocking. If ever there was a revelation of how incompetent this industry is at the moment, this is it.

Here is a fucking company who actively has announced things that WILL negatively impact every single consumer on the market... and then, in an attempt to muddy the waters, released literally like five or six different versions of the story to try to pretend it wasn't a problem. Oh hey, WE CAN CONFIRM that no used games is false! Wait, I mean *you* won't pay a fee! See, no fee! Don't look behind the curtain, because we're about to tell you that your friends WILL have to pay! Now hold on, what we mean is you just can't lend games without your friend payin' a fee, you can still resell games! Wait a second, we're just discussing POTENTIAL SCENARIOS. Oh wait, think of it like it's a new game... NO FUCKERS, IT'S NOT A GODDAMN NEW GAME. YOU FUCKING DIRTY NO-GOOD ASSHOLES. Goddamn, Microsoft is the worst company ever. Where were the journalists with a list of all the stories being told about this subject, showing them to the latest bullshit artist representing the Xbox One and demanding some honest straight forward answers?

Ok, so what's next? Oh yeah, hey everyone...if you use CLOUD, the Xbox One will get a billion times stronger! A trillion! A zillion! "But wait," anyone with a shred of fucking intelligence responds, "what happens if the internet goes down? What happens if you don't have as faster of a connection? How would such shit get around the endless cloud service bottlenecks? How will it do any fucking thing you assholes say? Can a fucking game journalist do their job?" Find out at eleven o'clock!

No, you won't be able to rent games! Fuck that shit, what a privilege all you potential thieves out there have had for this long! How dare you have such a right, like trying these gargantuan bloated MODERN AAA pieces of garbage out so you don't waste $60 fucking bucks playing the latest 4 hour hallway corridor generation X-Z nonsense title produced almost entirely by eight thousand board rooms across the planet. But hey, it has multiplayer guys! The same fucking multiplayer you've played in Call of Duty twenty eight thousand times, but it's there! VALUE ADDED!

No, you won't be able to fucking use your games beyond 24 hours if you don't have an internet connection, because we believe your lardy, undeveloped asses are so goddamn lazy that you're willing to actively give up ownership privileges just so you can fucking swap games around a little easier! Of course, that's all bullshit, because this is all an elaborate scheme to fuck piracy up some more, even though every fucked up DRM scheme that has been tried this past generation has reamed honest, hard-working and hard-payin' consumers so far up the ass that they have gaping holes larger than what's at the center of the fucking Milky Way Galaxy.

Now there are obviously exceptions. Some game journalists are raging. But this shit is ridiculous. EVERY major website right now should be eviscerating Microsoft. IGN should be fucking vomiting at these decisions every five second around the clock until the system launches. They should be disemboweling these pathetic PR representatives of these hateful corporations, spitting their sludge all over the faces of everyone who ever purchased games from them, denying them even a second to mislead legions of consumers into thinking the system is anything except what it is: the world's biggest fucking cock being whipped out and slapped across your goddamn face!

Oh, what about this shit? Why is your focus during your GAME CONSOLE reveal fuckin' TV? Why have you chosen your philosophy? WHY should gamers take this shit lying down? WHAT BENEFIT DOES IT HAVE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!? For the love of Christ, someone ask some hard goddamn questions! You are all informed to the tit, please use your knowledge to slash these assholes throats so that all the bullshit will spill out and we'll stop having to swim through torrents of anti-consumer diarrhea!

Rockclapping.gif. Perfect rant. Thanks for saving me the trouble of creating something less perfect.

So the company who can't even use Xbox Live money to make sure their games are not lag fests on actual dedicated servers are going to offload SHITTONS of bandwidth for AI computing etc. at no extra fee?
$80 dollar games coming to pay for the power of the cloud!

To be fair, they did say they'd be providing dedicated servers for (all?) games at their conference.

It was one of the very few positive things they said.

Were they mounting it up on back stages as xboxers paid for Gold?

For something people call the "America Box", pimping out the cloud so much isn't exactly wise given internet speeds in most of America. I hope MS is banking on some major internet infrastructure advancements here if they truly think this could work out.

We'll see how useful it really is since it just comes across as some magical equalizer for now to make up the actual hardware discrepancies between the two consoles. It's the secret sauce re-imagined with a new name being "THE CLOUD".

Edit: I did like the dedicated servers talk of the conference but that's at least tangible for now. They really need to give real examples of the cloud in practical scenarios and hope it doesn't come across as a bait and switch. I just don't see how it's possible for the entire userbase, especially with speeds and latency hurting companies like OnLive that tried to come out before it was feasible to a large market.

And Win 8 is 200x as powerful with the cloud. Now what? It's just an assumption and theory crafting. I HIGHLY doubt it'll be viable and practical. What if you're disconnected? Will you get a worse experience because something is not cloud-calculated properly? What if you have unstable internet or slow speed?

It just doesn't make any god damn sense. Maybe for some multiplayer games, but that's about it.

You know what the punchline is gonna be? Paid Live memberships are going to be mandatory to use an Xbox One. They've been dancing around this, basically everything they've talked about, between internet required, online profiles and cloud processing all suggest to me that there simply won't be a free option anymore. It renders the debate over what is and isn't behind the paywall moot, since there won't be a Silver level to worry about at all.

You're paying 20 bucks a month for all these awesome cloud services and upgrades, not for playing games online! That's old hat!

Whats Sony offering? Free games? Who needs free games when you have the CLOUUUD?!

Whats the PC offering through Steam? No fee...and the cloud eh...

Hmm.

The sad part is that people, here even, don't understand that a lot of online business applications and physics-intensive algorithms are run entirely in the cloud today.

It's not conceptual, it just hasn't been applied to games yet. It's not even left field thinking. It's just a logical progression.

Will we see it soon? Probably not. Will it take years to culminate into something that we realize has value like Xbox Live did so many years ago? Probably, and maybe it won't amount to anything. Does anyone here have a clue what they're talking about. Definitely no.
People know enough to be wary of the way it's being marketed right now. Distributed computing isn't exactly a new concept.

My concern now is that the XBox One is going to be a subscription only console. Those cloud computers don't pay for themselves.

You're probably right, that's the only way any of this makes sense financially. They sell the console at a low price and then lock you into a subscription for the duration of the console lifespan.

Especially if live gold is required. That might mean that without live games that a user owns will cease to function if a person cancels their gold subscription.

There are absolutely a lot of things that can be run on this but a few points

Number one. Increased reliance on moving data to and from 'the cloud' relies on the network connection to do it both in terms of bandwidth and latency, as such any system that would require the cloud in order for the game to operate or operate effectively is significantly limiting its userbase. It's further true that even if a player can make successful use of such a feature generally a failure in a single instance would impact his experience of the game. Thirdly unless there is a significant effort on MSs part to educate consumers on what will and will not require level x of internet connectivity there is a real problem with confusion in the market.

Second point a significant portion of game code is currently sensitive to latency, the obvious example being the rendering process. You might argue that one could calculate some low frequency effect that changes slowly on the server side and then stream something like a lightmap back, but the data output if you want it to be high quality would be large and the input would still have to be your scene or some optimized version of your scene and it won't be able to incorporate rapid movement because the latency would be too high, so I don't think it would be very applicable to any sort of real time rendering application. If you wanted to make a pretty bullshot to post on twitter or whatever it can totally render the shit out of that though but that's not really in game. So what other jobs could it be effective at? I'm not seeing a significantly large list of things that could benefit a single-player game. I think what I would expect to see more of than anything is sort of special features type things, think Demon's Souls light and dark world tendencies but more expanded upon. Maintaining some sort of global state across all of the players of the game, stitching more single-player style experiences together with other players to make them more part of a unified game world.

I guess the bottom line is I can't see anything that would happen on XBone in the cloud that would improve performance for existing game tasks, but rather that I can see it in a role that having such a system guaranteed would encourage devs to add new and different features that might take advantage of it.

Lets pretend for a moment we live in some fantasy world where everyone has gigabit internet connections. And thus we might be able to take this cloud fib a little more seriously.

Say we have a 10 million xbone players. With 300,000 servers that is only enough for 1 server for every 33 players.

Using MS's math that would mean 1 server is 33x40 or 1320x more powerful than a single Xbone.

That would mean 1,584 fucking teraflops per server!!

Which advanced alien race is MS buying their servers from? And why couldn't they help them build a better xbox?

If the XBone is 1.5~TFLOPS (I dunno the numbers for the CPU). Then each `cloud` is going to be 5TFLOPS?.

Really?.
Really?

:/

You do know how the cloud works right?

By NPD there are probably what, 30m 360's sold in the USA? How many actually are turned on and playing right now? 2m?

What about at 1AM in the afternoon on a school day?

That means you can be a whole lot more judicious with your computing power with cloud. If you dedicate 4X for all those 360's in the above example, that's still 8m rather than 30m.

Plus it's probably a whole lot more efficient.

This whole thing is pretty confusing. Gonna be fun though.

The damage control in here is hilarious. Everybody so skeert.

1. I agree. Xbone new convoluted scheme has zero benefits to gamers.
2. American media is biased for Microsoft. Sony would have been blasted to hell if tables were turned.
3. Dopeyfish working overtime.

10m xbone's are never going to be online at once. some small fraction is.

unless you think everybody in the world who owns an x360 is playing it 24/7. great logic.

no, 95% of them are sitting under the tv turned off at any given time, just like your ps3 is right now while you're posting on gaf.

Oh and btw, didn't they say 40X more than 360, not 40X more than Xbone? Yeah, they actually did. It'
s 4X Xbone, so redoe your math with division by ten for starters. Good thing we can keep our facts so straight while bashing MS for dishonesty.

I look forward to the Digital Foundry articles.

"So in conclusion, the next chapter for the Need for Speed series clearly takes the lead on Xbox One over Playstation 4 during the times of 1-5:25AM PDT, during mostly weekdays. Expect lighter weather conditions in game and heavy framerate issues into the coming weekend."

This is an Xbox One...
And this is an ascended Xbox, or as I like to call it, Xbox One [with the cloud]...
And this.. is to go even further beyond! ... AAAAAAAAA

Even if you scalled it down to your pathetic 5% of a mere 10M players being online. That is 500,000 users.

And that would mean each server would have to be 66.6Teraflops. Still well in the range of alien technology.

BTW the fastest super computer in the world right now according to top500.org (the Cray Titan XK7) is only 1.4Tflops theoretical max per server node. But it has 18,688 nodes.

Isn't the whole point of the Xbone that it's always on, always being used? That would mean that you'd have millions (ideally for MS) of xbones at a time accessing these servers, uploading and downloading, both for common stuff like friends list AND complex computational cloud power.

I question MS's ability to pull off that significant of a server network.

I agree , and i really fear for the future of gaming :(

Literally back to back. Listen cloud computing is a real thing we get it, but let's be real it is never going to make the Xbox 40X more powerful or even a fraction of that. It is, for this coming generation at least, a wolf in sheep's clothing and nothing more. It gives companies like EA a perfect out to make their games always online.

(MS Shill here, so disregard if you think I'm all da bias).

Yeah, that's the troubling bit. Azure is very very very cool. Developing for their mobile services was incredibly easy -- it took me about 2 hours to implement easy uploading of database tables for a mobile app I'm developing on Windows Phone.

Azure's toolsets and the xbox team's trumping of these services makes me very intrigued at what they actually have cooked up. They've been hiring a LOT of xbox live service guys lately (two people in my team of ~ 10 got sniped in the past 6 months alone). If they can make developing routines very simple for gaming, then this cloud power thing has some real legitimacy of offering up a lot of benefit and longevity to the console.

It's also an incredibly easy for a sim-city pseudo-online requirement b.s. That is certainly troubling.

My hope is that the xbox team implements a really good used-game marketplace that benefits consumers and publishers by both enabling easy reselling of games for CASH (ms credit that can be exported out of ms ecosystem) and giving publishers a cut of that profit. If implemented well enough (and is used), hopefully that would tide that sim-city bs from getting pushed by big publishers.

Dude... Stop defending the bullshit.

I have fibre, it sends me data at 4.5MB/s maximum can you explain to me how the fucking hell MS is going to fit all that data in my pipe, which is a big pipe in the grand scheme of things.

I'm surprised they are actually continuing with this farce. Are they hoping to get all the bad blood out now and people will just forget later?

I know, but they know the mouth breathing bottom dwellers will lap it up. When you can't compete on physical specs you go to your virtual specs - which get better and better each time you tell the story.

Every single thing MS is saying about the AWESOME benefits of Cloud screams bullshit.

This, this, this, and this. It's sounds like they're banking on tech that hasn't been finalized. I've said it before and I'll say it again: There is such a thing as too forward thinking.
