Nothing is going to change. If anything such shootings will only drive up gun sales. People stocking up guns for the fear of being caught off guard. None of the presidential candidates will do anything about it as well. It is a sad day for America.

My dad, a Louisiana native, suddenly got way into guns a couple of years ago, it went hand in hand with him start going to church oddly enough. He's gone so far that he told me today that the government is conducting military training to take our guns away, starting in Texas. He honestly believes this shit, I'm just like...... Yeah ok anyway.... I don't know who he is anymore, he didn't give a shit about guns his entire life and now he thinks everyone is trying to kill him and the government is going to take away his guns. My wife and I are vehemently opposed to guns and he knows yet, yet he still preaches to me about it whenever I call him. He scared my younger brother and sister into getting guns also. Really not looking forward to thanksgiving this year.

Was making this while the other thread was being locked.

Didn't think I'd have reason to post it again today...

Yikes. Accurate.

Still deciding whether I should laugh, cringe, or cry.

Gun culture and gun ownership is ingrained into American society. The right to own guns is included in the U.S. Constitution, and if the government ever decided to start confiscating or even implementing more stricter gun ownership regulations then there would be a big risk of armed conflict. Fact is there are a lot of nut jobs out there who would rather die than to hand in their guns.

So we either accept these mass shootings as part of American society or risk another civil war
Fight a civil war then? The Feds would win easily.

The thing is, you can't really do anything about it with parties like the NRA involved.
You also can't just erase the millions and millions of firearms in people's homes right now.

Yes you can. Any other civilized county would sort this shit out. Trouble is in America, money buys politics

What the fuck is happening?! I go to work out for an hour and more chaos breaks out? Fuck this country and its bullshit gun laws man.

Do other civilized countries have tens of millions of citizens that would rather die than to hand in their guns?

You can't compare America to other countries, most countries don't have the right to bear arms in their constitution

It's really not. A lot of those mass shootings in the calendar are probably gang violence related.

It's not just about these shooting though. You have also got police brutalization, rampant racism, corporate shenanigans...

It's sometimes difficult to believe that gun violence is actually at an all time low in this country, but apparently it is. There was a lot more of this in prior decades. A lot more.

It's just that news travels faster and wider now.

edit: doesn't make it any more acceptable, for a developed country, the per capita of violent crime is unusually high in the USA. We have things to improve on.

Which also happens in other countries. Don't get me wrong, the US has lots of problems, especially worrisome gun violence, but it's not a war zone, people are not afraid of their lives going out of the house. The majority of Americans who don't live in major inner city areas end up living very peaceful lives.

I have no idea what the American government is supposed to do at this point. There are hundreds of millions of guns in private hands, meaning that gun laws would probably do nothing -- and even if they tried passing something it'd get shot down in the senate. Besides that, the whole "They're taking our guns!" line that the NRA peddled to the public seems to have found an audience and that audience seems to be more and more eager to open up on whatever federal officer comes a-nockin'. What could get people to start giving up guns? More buyback programs? Although I remember reading those don't even work... Besides, the real loonies would never give their guns up.

Statistically mass shootings are related to domestic violence, not gang violence. It's usually a white dude in his thirties killing his family.

The 3 specific problems you mentioned are issues in most of the world as well.
We definitely have a unique situation with guns here though that is tragic.

I don't know any other place where cops gun down civilians in the name of law. Racism is something that I can probably agree with (but still much more in US than other developed nations) and then you have got some of the biggest corporate here who will try to lobby as much as possible to fuck us consumers.

I looked it up, you're right, but only when counting murders (4+ dead), domestic violence is 57% when defined that way.

It looks like that calendar is counting both death and injured together (any shooting victim), which the majority in my small click through seems to be related to gang violence.

Why the fuck are guns even still a thing? Why is it necessary to have an instrument that can kill someone instantly? Fuck.

To be able to defend yourself against government tyranny. The original reasoning. It was great when it was just muskets vs. muskets, like that one Australian comedian said.

Consider the possibility that he's developing a mental illness. I don't mean that negatively, but that kind of sudden change in behavior in someone I know would make me concerned for their health.

I don't understand the logic here. I mean do people really think that in a hypothetical case, they can fight the US govt... I mean army could probably wipe out regions in minutes.

Of course not, but it's their excuse and they're using it. They probably just plug up their ears when anyone gives a response explaining why it's stupid.

I agree. Something needs to be done. Another guy in this thread said hes scared to leave his house. This shit should not be happening. Wake up America.

While its not really a defensible argument to say a local population could defeat a well trained army over a long period of time, it is reasonable to say that the government is less likely to implement ... vexing ... laws if they think the people will rise up in arms against it. The recent Clive Bundy standoff in Nevada is a good example, the govt backed down from confiscating some cattle because the civilians were heavily armed, it would have looked terrible if a shootout started ala Waco, etc.

And the military is not going to want to go around exterminating fellow country men. If they know the people are just armed with knives and bats they have pretty effective control and aren't going to be worried about getting into drawn out conflicts. If everyone is armed then it can escalate rapidly and they will not want to get involved, period.

Lastly its been shown in the world time and time again that insurgents can effectively fight a long withdrawn war with small arms against large military powers, and even "win" by forcing the occupying force to withdraw since the other side isn't going to start nuking or carpet bombing everyone to fight back.

This is exactly how I would summarise the challenges of implementing laws and why it hasn't happened yet.

I would actually support such zones. Like, Christian conservative zone here, liberal crazy zone here, pockets of different immigrant countries here, there, and then a zone that's just normal America. And moving costs and such would be subsidized.

Never happen.

What the hell that's a retarded idea.

You're just pretending the problem isn't there and worse, you're trying to solve it by creating open discrimination.

Enact harsher gun laws America. Your situation is a parody right now.

Unbelievable news day. RIP to the officer and the woman he stabbed. Hopefully this scumbag rots in max prison the rest of his life.

That's terrible. :(

What goes on in a person's mind that he/she can kill another person without any regard?

Rest in peace to the victims.

People seem to be really going crazy. These mass shootings mixed with all these crazy conspiracy theorists. Something's gone bad. Feels like we're slowly descending into madness.
