Due to Death Row only having a small catalogue of albums, they would barely make any money from the streaming apps. The bigger labels with very large catalogues would be doing OK and probably have special deals set up with Spotify, YT etc.

The mid-80s was make-or-break time for Kate Bush. Since her breakthrough in 1978, she’d been gradually alienating her fans with successive ambitious but non-commercial left turns. As such, her label EMI was seriously concerned for her future as a pop artist.

However, that all changed in 1985. She returned after 18 months at her farmhouse recording studio with her weirdness intact and a song about Faustian-deals, body swapping and the power of love. And it saved her career. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God).”

Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" is charting again due to it being in Stranger Things. Looks like it will be in the top 20, maybe top 10 in the next Australian, UK & US charts. It's number 1 on the itunes charts and up to 13 on Spotify.

In 1985 it got to 3 in the UK, 6 in Australia and 30 in the US, her only song to chart in the American top 40.

Up next we celebrate Benny Mardones who passed away 2 years ago. Considered by the industry to be a one hit wonder. His one hit, called Into the Night was much more than that simple label.. It has charted 3 different times over the last 40 years including hitting the billboard hot top 20 twice in the 80s at the beginning and end of the decade. It’s one of the most misunderstood song of the rock era, and isn’t about what you think it’s about! It’s singer and writer was a special soul, who battled his demons and won, inspiring so many along the way. I was able to interview him before he passed and it’s definitely one of my most cherished sit down ever.

It's an interesting story. And the song isn't as creepy as it seems.

Not news necessarily, but I was a bit surprised that Fanatano liked the new Viagra Boys album so much. Not so surprised, as it's probably my least favorite of theirs so far and Fanatano and I have very different tastes in music. Anyway, he has an interview with the group's frontman:

In this clip, Snow opened up about linking up with MC Shan in Queens, which led to Shan finding out that Snow could rap. From there, Snow spoke about recording a host of songs at Shan's house, including "Informer," which they also shot the video for. Snow also spoke about signing a label deal before going back to Toronto, where he was sentenced to a year for an assault charge. While in jail, Snow's "Informer" video dropped, which led to inmates asking for his autograph. To hear more, including Snow speaking about a limo picking him up from jail, hit the above clip.

A licky boom-boom down!

Despite its name, Power Pop as a genre has often failed to accrue the popularity necessary to set the charts ablaze. Fountains of Wayne’s brand of detail-rich storytelling and bittersweet character study twinned with a sugary 90s alt rock crunch did little to change that.

They were the bizarro Weezer, loved by critics but underrated by the general music listening public. That was until they created the “second-catchiest song ever written about a girlfriend's parent." [Ben Greenman, The New Yorker, June 2003] By that point though, one of their songwriters had already racked up his fair share of fantasy pop gems for Hollywood. This is the Story of “Stacy’s Mom” and the Many Imaginary Hits of Adam Schlesinger.

Michelle Branch was arrested for domestic assault, the Nashville police department confirmed to Variety. The arrest took place following the announcement that Branch was splitting from her husband of three years, “The Black Keys” drummer Patrick Carney. TMZ first reported the arrest, adding that court documents revealed Branch had slapped Carney in the face “one to two times.” Branch’s bail was set at $1,000.

Branch and Carney married in 2019. Branch said in a statement to TMZ while announcing the split: “To say that I am totally devastated doesn’t even come close to describing how I feel for myself and for my family. The rug has been completely pulled from underneath me and now I must figure out how to move forward. With such small children, I ask for privacy and kindness.”

Before announcing the split, Branch took to Twitter and accused Carney of cheating on her. The two musicians have two children together and lived in Nashville.

Branch rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a singer-songwriter thanks to her bestselling albums “The Spirit Room” and “Hotel Paper.” The former album included her breakout single, “Everywhere,” which just celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. Branch won a Grammy Award for pop collaboration with vocals thanks to her 2022 duet with Santana titled “The Game of Love.”

Branch is currently gearing up to release her fourth studio album, “The Trouble with Fever,” which is scheduled to be released on Sept. 16. The musician has a fall tour planned with stops including New York City’s Webster Hall.

Sounds like a shitty situation.

She made some catchy music. If Taylor Swift made some of her songs they would have been big hits but for Branch they were just moderate hits for some reason.

There are literally the lyrics

Bigger they are they think they have more power
There on the phone me say that on every hour
Me for want to use it once and-a me call me lover
Lover who me callin'-a the one Tammy
And me love her in my heart down to my belly-a
Yes say Daddy Me Snow me I feel cool and deadly
Yes the one MC Shan and the one Daddy Snow
Together we-a love 'em as a tornado

what the fuck

For most of the 90s, Aphex Twin ran counter to what was happening in mainstream dance music. He was messing with low-key ambience during the forceful Eurodance of “Rhythm is a Dancer.” Moved to harsh industrial noise as Europe was smitten by the dreamy trance of Robert Miles’ “Children.” And when Prodigy and Chemical Brothers ruled the roost, Aphex Twin was attempting to rupture drum and bass with rapid stuttered software-programmed beats. The Aphex Twin story is similarly antagonistic, filled with fabrication, half-truths and provocation pried from the man himself. Did he own a tank, live in a bank and do a DJ set using solely sandpaper and a food mixer? Quite possibly, but picking through everything he’s said for the presence of truth is a foolish exercise. The legend is more fun than the bedroom-based music geek reality. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Windowlicker.”

Two of my favorite 2000s alt rock groups came back with new singles recently.

The Arctic Monkeys: "There'd Better Be A Mirrorball"

I count myself in the minority that loved Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, it might even be my favorite album from them as a whole, but I find myself disappointed that their new song sounds so similar to the last album. I saw TBH+C to be a really cool experimental detour and did not anticipate it would fully become their new sound. Maybe this will grow on me, but as it stands I find this new song fairly forgettable.

The Killers: "Boy"

Interesting song, apparently this was held back from their last album, Pressure Machine, because they believed it did not fit with the rest of the songs as it was more of their classic sound. Hearing that before the song released, I expected something much different than what we got. This song is really weird to me, especially the vocal effect Flowers is using, but even still it's pretty catchy and leaves me hopeful for the direction of their next album.
