My [2nd] Dreamcast just died

It keeps reseting itself at at random times. The reader mechanism died on my original one. I've never had this problem with my Megadrive (13 years) and Saturn (8 years) it seems Sega just didn't build the DC to last like Sony's consoles.

Dreamcasts have a pretty high failure rate. I'm on my second (Black model) and my cousin is on his 3rd. It's a shame, really. I doubt we'll have very many working Dreamcasts five years from now the way they keep dying off.

Those things get pretty hot, try not to put it on carpet. But it'll still get hot. This little clear plastic piece inside mine was melting and smelled. Of course I took my beloved Dreamcast apart and put a clear yellow shell on it, and when I finished putting it back together I ended up with 9 extra screws...

The controller ports went kaplooie on one of mine. Luckily I bought a brand new backup system during the fire sale days.

You people most be rough on your sytems. I have an oriignal Dreamcast form the launch day, and it works fine. Plus a friend gave me his dremacast he bought, and it work too. My playstation 2 runs in perfect order.
The Only 2 machine I had go out on me. 1 was my orginal Playstation form the original launch date. Then it went out not becuase of system failure but becase the CD spindel got cracked. This may have been due carrying it back and forth to college, and other people from college ( like room-mates) playing it.
The other machine was my Oriignal Saturn. One day it stopped working, and I had to get a replacement, but the reason it probally stopped working was becuase of my mom at the time. she dropped it once while cleaning, and another time the system fell because she got the vacum cord tangled in the Saturn Power cord. Besides those 2 systems, All of my other systems and replacement systems work to this day.

i can second that the 'push the connectors' technique listed above really works too.. its not difficult to perform either and its not like you've got warranty :)

my DC started resetting itself after countless hours of PSO

:(

and funny enough, my launch PS2 (which i have played more than my DC) is still alive and well

dreamcasts, in my experience, are the shoddiest consoles since the nes. a shame since there are a half dozen dreamcast games i still like to play.

Stuff like this makes me afraid to play my DC too much. :(
Get a backup. They're like $20. If you get one with the random reset problem, try the trick I posted above.

My launch Dreamcast (made in Japan) had its drive motor die during PSO. To be fair, it was spinning thousands and thousands of hours. I got a replacement drive, and it still works fine to this day, but yes, the Dreamcast is Sega's most poorly made console. The made in China ones are garbage.

I still own my 9/9/99 Dreamcast and it works like a charm. I can't believe its been already 6 years.

You're lucky; I still have my launch Dreamcast, but it only lasted until 2001 or 2002. Even my second Dreamcast (currently mothballed) was a little finicky.

Well I take good care of my consoles, starting with the N64 I kept a can of compressed air handy and cleaned the lens carefully and have had good luck. But thanks to Sony I need to have a fear about my hardware failing for every system they launch. Main reason I returned my PSP, figured I would sit back and watch for a while.

Exactly... and yeah man, when I have a console in the "now playing" rotation I clean them about once a week. Open 'em up to make sure all is well and brush/blow out the dust that accumulates inside. Especially necessary with newer consoles that feature fans since it sucks dust through the vents.

My controllers get a good cleaning after every use as well. I open those up too and clean off the analog stick shavings or dirt from the gears that control them one in a while.

My stuff is meticulous and I have yet to have a system fail on me. All of them launch consoles as well.

Uhhhh...What ?

I edited it just after posting and now it doesn't make sense. I meant to say "MUCH like Sony's consoles".

Anyway thanks for the tips GAF they worked a treat.

The DC been resurrected and it's not even 2009 yet

I've owned a total of 6 Dreamcast's - two of them died. that's 1 in 3 failure rate for mine, which speaks pretty badly for DC's reliability. even my 1995 U.S. launch Playstation is still working (though it skipes like a mofo).

Funny thing is that I still see plenty of used Dreamcasts around. I could literally walk ten minutes in either direction up my street and find one or two DC's in their respective stores for 40 or 50 bucks Canadian. Meanwhile I think I've only seen two Saturn's on sale in the last couple years. They're as hard to find as Keira Knightly's breasts.

that's because your dreamcast saw this.

can't blame it

I have two Dreamcast systems as well, and one of them is on life support.

That said, it's too bad those Xbox playing Dreamcast game rumors didn't turn out to be true because it would have been nice right about now. =(

My original Dreamcast stopped spinning discs within two days of NHL 2K2's release, with said game inside of the unit. Cruel, cruel irony.

At least by then I had three other working DC's. One being the Smash Pack DC I'd gotten for the river house, and two $50 clearance units which I figured I could keep tucked away for future use or resellage. Yeah, they're still in my closet...

I wish I still had a working Dreamcast.

One day those fuckers will be worth lots of money.

They'll have Dreamcast museums that display 'Actual WORKING Dreamcast' units.

People will go "ooh, ahhhhh!"

I love the jackasses like this guy that always pop up in the broken systems threads.

Not really. It's pretty well documented that Dreamcasts have bad drives (can't vouch for the reset problem... never ran into it). I currently own a NES, SNES, 2 Saturns, 1 PSOne, 1 N64, 3 Dreamcasts, and a XBox.

Of all of those, my Dreamcast is the only one where the drive completely stopped working. I bought a replacement drive off NCS and it works now. Although I will say that my Saturn drive just started having issues ever since we moved :/

At any rate, I say this because it's not due to poor handling. The DC drive is one of the more faulty ones and you will find countless complaints of dead ones just like the original Playstation. Just because your DC works now does not mean that all DC drives are long-lasting. And just because your DC works doesn't mean that everyone else's DC that doesn't is being mishandled.

It's just that people assume broken machines = neglect but nowdays it's increasingly due to poor manufacturing

My "Made in Japan" North American DC still runs.-not that I use it often. It was bought 9-9-99.

The DC unit I purchased a year later, the made-in-china model died fast. When i looked inside both of them, I found that the mad in Japan model had a higher quality construction, while the China variant traded metal parts for plastic ones, etc.

After 10 years my model 1 saturn still runs swell. Even AFTER a botched region switch mod I performed a year back.

ALSO: edit: unlike other systems, the DC drive is very easy to replace. NCS even used to sell replacement drives. If you ever want to swap a newer model drive into an older (made in Japan model) DC, it takes no more than 5 minutes.
