My coworker might get fired for a racist comment.

Why are people feeling bad about her being fired? That means somebody else who is better at jobs and isn't racist can get a new job. Instead of thinking a racist lost a job, you should be thinking how a non-racist gets a job.

Company would be better off without a person this monumentally dumb. Imagine she says something like this in front of a client, customer or business partner?

Sometimes someone will say something horribly racist to me with a *winkwink nudgenudge* and I'll ask myself "What is it about me that makes this person think I'm going to share their racist opinions?" Do I look like a racist? Have I ever said anything to this person before to make them think I'm as racist as they are? Or do they just assume everyone's secretly racist and just run with it?

That's weird. Do you live in an area in which people are a minority? They might assume you're racist like they are just because you're white.

I wouldn't be surprised if most racists believe all people of their race are secretly racist.

It's pretty much a 99% white midwestern community, so you're probably right.

And nothing of value was lost.

@backslash: The right of free speech is guaranteed in the Constitution; it's a right that the government cannot infringe on.

Those are really shitty things to say. You did the right thing OP.

To be fair, I did not call up HR. I don't want to take the credit for R's actions. He was the one who immediately informed the higher ups, like, probably within 2-3 minutes of it happening. HR through their investigation reached me over the phone and I talked to them about it.

She is actually nice to everyone, including our Jewish boss. She chats it up with him from time to time. Like someone mentioned in the thread, she doesn't think what she is saying/doing is a mistake.

Do you think she would she treat him with the same respect if he wasn't her boss?

But perhaps she thinks that he's one of the "good ones".

I was actually thinking today... If you think racism is well and dead, ask a room full of diverse people if they honestly have ethnic preferences in their dating life.

I'd honestly the guess the "I'm perfectly open to dating people from any race"- and they really mean it - is a minority opinion.

That's the racism which is very much alive and well in 2014.

Its always surprising to see people pop in these threads like.

"You would rat her out for that?!"

Or

"That shouldn't be a fireable offense!"

I always wonder where the people come from that do or say something silly like this, and then have the nerve to be shocked when the consequences are humongous. Its interesting to get a look at them prior to an actual shitstorm. They should take this as an FYI. Yes referring to other races as 'sub' white or whatever publicly at work is indeed something that may cost you your career.

I don't think that's racism at all.

She is an idiot and said a stupid thing. Did she harm anyone? I'm not sure.

How about if she said no poor nor ugly person? This is offensive too. Would it cost her job?

Anyway I wouldn't rat on a colleague about her morality or job performance unless it was a life / safety threatening case, wtf.

Im always impressed when people like this manage to have a job for as long as they do anyways... like... how hard was it for you to keep your bigot, racist mouth shut for however many years you worked at company x before you finally put your foot in your mouth in front of the wrong person.

wellbye.gif indeed...

...being racist isn't the same as calling someone ugly.

...she's not being ratted on by a colleague. The dumbass said this shit in front of a manager.

Correct, letting someone spew racist garbage right in front of you and not doing a fuckin' thing about it IS a "wtf?" sorta situation if I ever heard it.

So she wasn't joking, and continued to be an idiot out in the open.

Fuck her.

That's what I thought. Even if she meant that first comment, if she would have been smart she would have backed out of it after seeing people's reactions... But noooo. She just kept going. ???? She deserves punishment. I don't know if that means firing her but she deserves something.

Reading that I immediately though it was a reference to the family guy golf joke. The fact that she thinks that is w/e, lots of people think lots of dumb shit. The fact she said that in a work setting is completely baffling though. In what world do you think you can say obviously derogatory statements at work and not get in trouble?

And her boss is Jewish too, I'd fire any employees dumb enough to pull something like that.

Hear far worse on a near daily basis. Rooting for someone to lose their job is never going to sit right. You can be a dumb racist asshole and still work hard and need your job. Maybe try to speak to the lady instead of sitting on the Internet Horse and condemning.

It's the very definition of racism.

Maybe one could argue that it's reasonable racism?

Reasonable racism for sure. But it is racism. It's saying that out of the hundreds of millions of people of a certain race, their personalities and their looks do nothing for you. I find it to be absurd and quite frankly moronic.

It's never nice to see someone lose their job but like, I'd fire her too. You're just a liability to me at this point honestly and like, any sane person shouldn't have to deal with that bullshit in the work place.

Good for you, OP. The best way to deal with racist comments is to let the person know its not funny or an acceptable thing to say. Hopefully she will learn from this and stop being a racist.

... I don't get it ._.? What does oil have to do with any of this? I feel like I'm missing something.

I would assume its a reference to cooking chicken.

You're telling me everyone gets fired the first time they fuck up? What she said was wrong, but she wasn't directing it at anyone at the company or customers. I understand the idea you want to curb this behavior, but instantly sacking someone like this without a warning will only punish her family and just make her more resentful. Give her a warning, give her sensitivity training, try to fix the root of the problem instead of just sweeping it under the rug.

L am going to be home late today honey, am being sent to sensitivity training for being a racist and also poisoning your mind as my daughter and ruining any worthwhile relationship you may have in the future, see you in the evening and have a nice day today.

Well personally I'd root for her to see the error of her ways and make a heartfelt enough appeal to HR and maybe even the 2 people she offended and save her career and maybe she can even go talk to her family about the way they've been acting.

But, if not that.. then she should be fired and I don't feel bad, and that sits right with me.

Now R is an indirect manager. He gets up and excuses himself out and informs the higher ups.
I know that was objectionable shit she said, but is the best first reaction to march up to the main office to have them fired?

Shes an idiot for sure.

I don't get the whole "my mom has two rules...." Thing though you make it seem like it's her mum who said that.

Mm, yeah I dunno. I'm not so self-righteous I get a kick out of saying 'fuck her' because she just sounds stupid and she's still a person and people need jobs, but at the same time there are plenty of good arguments to be made for getting rid of someone who would say things like this obliviously.

Congrats, you showed that 50 year old bigot what's up. The fact that she will have to eat cat food later in life due to this should make her change her ways.

well I don't think sensitivity training would really cut it. and if she might end up in a position of leadership, that wouldn't be so hot either.

I'm thinking that termination would be the most appropriate, but also with $500 towards some racial sensitiviy training, post-firing. Get right with God, and maybe you won't be a liability to your next employer.

Good on you, OP.

I work with a woman from NY who has zero filter and awful sarcasm. We were meeting about a couple of the residents in a nursing home and one of the residents was having problems with dandruff and staff wanted to have something ordered to help.

Now, about 75% of our employees are Black and most of our female residents are Black as well. The group home manager is also Black. This woman is white and deep into middle age.

She says bluntly, "Well why don't we just give her some Crisco?" She tries to laugh it off and goes as far as to explain the "joke" to the home manager who just nods silently avoiding eye contact.

While I wanted to say something along the lines of "that's really uncalled for" but I haven't been there long and the situation was awkward enough.

Still, people need to have some sort of filter when they're at work, especially when it comes to race, religion, and politics.

Whats the racist connotation for Crisco?

I'm just glad people like that are getting dealt with accordingly, decades ago saying something like that was like saying good morning.

It's pretty racist and she sounds like an ignorant for sure

but

why does she need to be fired for that ? I mean, if she's not sucking at her job and if her position doesn't require working in public (representing the company) or dealing with black/jew customers ?

can you fire someone for being a prick ?

should you ?
