"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

RBH said:
So I was at the Hawks/Heat game earlier tonight, and I got a call from my brother. He had taken our 360 to a friend's house to play some Halo 3 and COD4, and when they connected it and were ready to start playing, the 360 RROD'd right when they turned it on. :lol ;_;

This is the 3rd 360 that has RROD'd on me. I have the Best Buy warranty plan, so I'm going there tomorrow to swap it for a new 360. The 360 I had was an early '07 (before the Zephyrs came out), so I'll definitely make sure that I get a Falcon. At the same time, I paid $399 for the 360 when I first got it, so if they give me back the $50 difference, I'll use it to get another warranty.

Microsoft should take the mountain of unsold Falcon Arcade units and just ship those to people with multiple console failures.

My Australian launch console packed it in on Friday, just two weeks shy of its second birthday. Gotta pack it up tonight and send it out in the morning. It sucks because I'm stuck just 75 points away from hitting 40,000 achievements, but at the same time, the lack of temptation to whore achievements means I'm getting lots of work done.

I just sent my 360 in. Not a RROD though, the thing kept freezing up--I assume that it's a drive problem? What's the turnaround time these days?

I'm tempted to buy a new console but a little worried. Are the Elites safer than the rest of the lineup? I was just going to get an Arcade but if those are just as faulty then never mind.

So the falcons have HDMI? Is that how to tell?

Oh snap!

Yahoo with the borderline flamebait:

Journalism or not-so stealth troll? :lol

Could be worse, at least each time I've sent my 360 back time to MS they've shipped my replacement out the same day they receive mine. Just saw a shipping notice for my latest RROD came through friday night - please please please let it be a quiet one *fingers crossed*

For the attention of British gaffers:

My friend's 360 finally gave up the ghost this morning, its a September 06 model, it lasted him since Xmas 06. He registered the failure through the xbox website, they said they'd send him a sticker to send the 360 back (I'm guessing he has to supply his own box?)

Should he have phoned rather than used the website, and does anyone know the current turnaround for 360 failures in the UK?

Cheers guys.

FALSE ALARM!

It was actually the four red lights (AV cable wasn't connected properly) rather than the 3 red lights.

I'm safe.......for now.

Two of my friends shipped back their 360s to MS because they didn't plug the AV cable all the way in.

Alright guys, i'm on my 2nd 360 now. This one's legit (bought new) so i'll be covered under warranty this time. Feel free to add me if you haven't already (NeoLeech).

It's chart update time! Will post this disclaimer from my last post:

These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

1zx2iyc.png

In the figures so far are 1108 dead / replaced 360s, 3 of which were falcon models (rs7k got 3 machines with bad drives from a store).

Next month I'm going to try and split the month's figures into refurb / original consoles that died.

Here's my story, my 05-2006 manuf'ed 360 died a week ago. Chalk me up on the board.

Sent it for repairs.. Living where I live sucks, I have to actually depend on 3rd party repairs. What a joke. :lol

There have been RRoD falcons... just none posted by NeoGAF posters yet.
Are you sure they are Falcons or Zephyrs?

Some people can't tell between the two since they both have the HDMI ports.

Yeah, the ones I have seen were 175w machines. But, things break, so it's no surprise there are a few dead ones floating around (hell, my mother has had 2 Wiis die on her).

Jesus Christ thats a lot. I don't suppose you can do that for the previous months?

It's actually higher than that... my list only contains the machines that I can put in a particular month.

Also... do what for previous months?

Ok, so my period of relief that my 360 actually wasn't dead turned out to be short-lived. :lol ;_;

I turned on my 360 to play some Crackdown when it froze on me. I took out Crackdown, turned off the 360, and then turned it back on and tried to play Madden '08 on it. It was fine for a few minutes, but then the screen just went black and I couldn't do anything, so I took out Madden again and turned off the 360. I then tried to turn on the 360 again when I got hit with an E71 system error (bottom right ring was flashing red).

I guess a silver lining for this situation is that w/ my Best Buy warranty, I get to exchange my old 360 from May '07 for a new Falcon.

My first 360 lasted from April '06 to November '06. Second 360 lasted from November '06 to May '07. And now my 3rd 360 lasted from May '07 to March '08.

*sigh*

yeah about my last repair...

i wonder... did they actually repair anything?! i've been getting infrequent dirty disc errors (the one where the blade slides out while you're playing the game) shortly after i got it back.

this is beyond frustrating. they promised me a working console plus my dedicated repair agent called only once to confirm the repair order and to let me know she was on the case.

what am i supposed to do if sending the damn thing in for repair isn't actually getting me anywhere?

did they check the unit once, find that it didn't give a DRE right off, and say "well it seems to be fine! no repair necessary, ship it back!"

i just want a working console so i can finish lost odyssey man without fear of losing a shitload of time between save points.

So I got my xbox back. (hooray)
Serial number and case are exactly the same (oh well no HDMI, wishful thinking)

However, when I hooked it up to my network, it was seen as a completely different xbox.

So I'm wondering, are they just changing the motherboards on these things now?

anyone have a similar situation?

thanks

Got my 360 back this afternoon, with a new motherboard. S/N and case are still the same, but since I got a free Xbox Live Gold month when I registered a new account this afternoon (not the included coupon, it was totally automatic) I guess they really changed everything on the inside.
Took only 9 days, which is nice.

Simple story from JAN 2006.

I got a 360 at launch by waiting outside of Best Buy for 24 hours with a friend. Months later I was playing Perfect Dark (Jungle Stage) and all the graphics became corrupted on the screen and the game froze. I turned it off, waited a moment and then turned it back on only to get the Red Ring of Death. (There goes 360 #1)

Back in those days MS would overnight a coffin so I sent mine out and got it back about 1 week later. I noticed the new unit had a different serial which had me thinking if they were just swapping out units to fix their problem. I played my new unit for a couple of minutes and then turned it off because I wanted to clean my apartment. About an hour later I wanted to play some more 360 and guess what? The disc tray refused to open (There goes 360 #2).

I won't be buying anymore Xbox products if I can help it. (which I can)

Whats up with a game disc spinning real fast for a moment, then going steady, clicking...and a whole bunch of other shit?

360 is such a piece of shit...Its fun though:lol

That's the drive having problems reading a sector on the disc. When it cannot read a sector, it spins down in an attempt to re-read it at lower speed, which yields a greater chance of success. If it still fails, it slows down even more, all the way down to 1X. As a last resort, it recalibrates its head (the clicking) and attempts reading again.

Once all these fail, you're screwed and you get the dirty disc blade. If any of these do succeed, the drive gradually spins back up to 12X and resumes normally.

I'M FUCKING DONE WITH MS. This is complete horseshit, what assholes!!! I finally get my console back today again after 2-3 weeks for my second round of repairs. MS sent me the exact same refurb back and the exhaust fans still make the goddamn fapping noises!!! They did absolutely nothing for the past 2-3 weeks. Wait I can't say they did nothing because now I am the proud owner of a giant ass dent on the front of the DVD tray while they were taking care of it. I'm glad to have sent my console back for repairs, not to have it fixed, only to get my refurb back further damaged then it already is.

I'm writing a complaint to the Better Business Bureau as we speak. After I'm done I am packing up my Xbox360, all the accessories, and games for it and going to GameStop tonight to trade it in for a PS3. I have reached my wits end and MS can kiss my ass I'm never buying hardware from them again and I'm going to make sure everyone I know is aware of what I went through.

this is what the drive in my 360 does all the fucking time. stupid fucking pos did it before i sent it in for repairs and it's still doing the same fucking thing.

i'm convinced they didn't fix shit.

My last one was sent in with that problem and it came back exactly the same. I imagine the Xbox repair center to be like those commercials where the monkeys are running the business.

Seriously though, that sounds like a pretty shitty experience. Hearing horror stories like this is part of the reason why I opted to get the Best Buy warranty, and even though I have to pay more, it's saved me alot of headaches.

I'm talking to a friend online and he suggests I fly to MS's HQ, go in front of the main building, put my Xbox360 on the ground, pull down my pants and take a giant dump on it. I would be taking a symbolic stance in showing how shitty their hardware is and how they treat their customers like crap.

God I'm so pissed right now.

That's HORRIBLE. If mine comes back and acts up, I swear I will be plenty pissed.

Illuminati, your 360 could have gotten dented in shipping...just saying.
Not with how it is packed. Those styrofoam place holders create a bigbuffer between the DVD tray and the wall of the box. Not to mention the fact that box is in perfect condition too. I could care less about the dent, I just wanted a goddamn system that worked and fans that didn't making loud ass fapping noises. I'm almost done getting everything together to trade in, I'm cutting my losses and wiping my hands clean of this shit.

Great info - thanks! Sometimes when it clicks I get the error, but sometimes it recovers. Interesting to know why.

So I still haven't been able to get my disc drive to work properly (it always opens itself) and I think I'm going to go ahead and call MS about it. Does anyone know if they'll do anything about it?

My 360 does this, and it has done it since I bought it last April for Guitar Hero 2. But the only time it ever does it is after playing a downloaded song in GH2, GH3 and Rock Band. It's like playing something off the HD and then going back to the disc causes its brain to melt. 30% of the time after I finish playing a downloaded song, it freezes on the score screen before it saves and gives me the unreadable disc error.

It's been especially annoying lately since I have a lot more downloaded songs with Rock Band. And now the problem has extended to where just scrolling down the song list causes it to happen.

Stupid machine.

It actually seems to have slowed down considerably, we've been on this page for a long time now

......or people just stop posting about them :lol

edit: doh, stuck me on a new page

I haven't really played mine lately... too damn paranoid. :(

I suppose I should use it more often though... hopefully it breaks before the warranty is up.

I have a feeling that my 360 is slowely moving towards it's death once again. Today while playing Virtua Fighter 5 the disc drive was acting up. The drive was constantly changing speeds in order to load and everytime it slowed down the music in the game stopped for a couple of seconds.

Well my xbox died a few weeks back. No RROD but it had no video, nor would it sync with controllers. I sent it in thinking, that the website that states a two business day turnaround was correct. Then i recieve a email from microsoft that the turnaround is now @ two - three weeks.

Are the really that backed up with bad xboxes? how long does it usually take?

My 360 finally gave up the ghost tonight. Manufactured in June of 06. I had Lost Planet in there last night, and suddenly it sounded like it started to scratch the disc during a multiplayer match. What do you know, I take it out today and it's got small circular scratches in it. Not enough to ruin the game, but still. Anyway, popped it back in, and I'm playing single player and suddenly it's graphical artifacts everywhere. GPU must have come unstuck from the board.

Was a good 15 months. Will be sending it in sometime this week.
