"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Wow. I may be a greedy bastard for doing this, but I've found that although Microsoft would never dare give 360 owners a refund, they seem perfectly willing to hand out free copies of first party games. I've received a game for each time I sent my console in for repairs. I got Viva Pinata for the first time, and now Project Gotham Racing 3 for the second. Plus, they give everyone a 1 month prepaid Xbox Live Gold Card, as far as I know. Really, that's a very generous policy, but if my consoles continue to break down, it won't make much of a difference to me.

well, as for me, after sending it in the 3rd time they told me that I will get special treatment and can either choose a game or a new controller. and yeah, you get 1 month of xbox live every repair

repair number 4 has started spitting out DRE's.

which is, unsurprisingly, the reason i sent the pos in the 3rd and 4th time. fucking bastards swore they'd fix it this time.

I don't know how you can expect to get a working unit when they're just repairing a broken one... That is to say, from the desciption of the 360's major problems (DREs and RRoD) you can't simply make existing non-functioning hardware work again. I was under the impression that they require completely new hardware if not redesigned/revisioned hardware. Know what I mean?

That being said, my latest/newest falcon system was the first one that completely failed on me. The others would freeze and red-ring, but could ultimately boot up every once and while or last an hour before dying...this one just didn't even initialize.

Nooo...My Elite just died and I've had it less than a year. Boo-urns, boo-urns I say! Just need to vent some frustrations.

um, if msft would actually replace the dvd drive with a new one at the repair center instead of sending the console back to me seemingly unrepaired i would have a higher chance at a functioning console. the motherboard on this console was replaced in january when i sent it in for DREs the first time.

DREs probably could be avoided if msft didn't use cheap parts and labour (my first console never got a DRE). no revision necessary.

FROM PSYCHOTEXT:

A big thanks to PSWii60 for posting these numbers for me while I'm on my enforced holiday... =)

Usual Disclaimer: These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

ru7jep.png

In the figures so far are 1207 dead / replaced 360s, 6 of which were falcon models. Of the falcon models that have broken; 4 were from drive issues (oddly all present at purchase) and 2 were from video problems (image stops displaying).

This Month

RRoD: 33

Drive: 6

Video: 6

Other Red Light: 2

Freezing: 1

Checkerboard: 1

Multiple: 1

Noisy: 1

11 of the 19 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Overall Falcon Issues

Drive: 4 (Oddly all present at purchase)

Video: 2 (Image stops displaying)

Will be interesting to see if GTAIV thins out the weaker members of the herd in May or it will just be business as usual.

Mine died last week, 3 red lights, error 0102. I'm fixing it myself (it's imported and local Microsoft basically told me to fuck off with my alien 360)

Good luck with the fixing, I tried that with 2 machines and couldn't do it. they worked for a few days only.

Well, 360 #6 just died. Lasted 2 days. It was a refurb (actually it was the same unit I sent in last time). Got the same error code as the last one too: E74. Seems like they didn't even fix it. The dvd drive still won't open unless you have a disc in the drive. Good thing I just got a brand new Arcade unit last week for my birthday.

Mine does the same thing. When you press the eject button, press firmly on the disc tray approximately one inch from the eject button, and slide your finger up. After a few tries you should be able to get the drive to open. Apparently has something to do with a magnetic sensor in the drive, or something along those lines.

i take it you're under the limited warranty? i'd hot/cool cycle it because it looks to be near deaths door.
Whats a good way to do this? Its been doing this since Burnout Paradise came out. I had it once on GTA4 too. When the dashboard loads, the artifacts start coming sometimes.

So this weekend my 360 died again. It's a GPU failure. I got the same symptoms that lots of people posted here - first time it freezes, second time the colour palette is screwed, then you just lose video totally, all the while audio is still working.

Called MS and needless to say it is no longer under warranty so they wanted something like 12000 yen ($100+) to fix it. I turned them down and I'm planning to go out and buy a new one tonight. I don't think anyone has posted so far about getting licenses transferred on a Japanese system so I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes - I'd hate to lose all the time limited DLC I grabbed, like the Lumines themes and stuff :(

Why don't I RROD it? Because it's already been repaired from an RROD last October, so I imagine the machine is now RROD-proof; unless anyone has any other tips I could use.

Do 360s tend to encounter any issues when set up vertically? Disc drive related or whatnot? Question may seem silly, but I normally have my 360 horizontal and I'm fightin' for room.

I have mine vertical for months now, no problems at all. A friend has it like that since launch.. no problems there either.

Lovely. Thank you, sir.

Edit: Now that I think of it, the question seems even more silly. After all, I had two 360 dvd drives fail and one 360 RRoD. All of which, were horizontal. I guess if your 360's going to croak... it'll croak.

OK Dr. GAF - I need a prognosis:

Launch 360 - it's been problem free since then, but tonight I turn it on and the screen is jittering back and forth to the left and right, and I am getting "noise" running on the left side of the screen.

So what's the story doc? Do i take Old Yeller out back, or is there still life left in the old girl?

I've tried to look through here, but I didn't see anything in what I found....

Has anyone experienced a failure in the wireless chip inside the console? I've tried two different sets of batteries now, one definitely near death, and one fine, and in both, the console will start up when I hold down on the controller, but will say "reconnect controller," while all 4 slots on the controller will continue to glow.

It could be that the second set of batteries are bad, but they do read green on my GBA, which is my only other test that I can perform here at college.

I might be panicking a bit here, but I'm almost certain my warranty is expired, since I bought a used near-launch unit, and I really don't want to have to pay for something this unlikely (at least, I think it's unlikely)

Bad controller maybe?

Well, I've tried both it and the Guitar Hero controller, and both gave the same flashing ring, even after I hit the reconnect buttons a few seperate times. So....I'm really hoping it's batteries.

Reconnect your video cables just to be sure.

It looks like what Dot50Cal has got going, but less intense, and only on the left side of the screen. What is far more annoying is the flickering/wobbling of everything going left to right and back...

I was getting violent shifts left and right as well, and a blue line of them appeared down the right hand side of the screen. I'd say your screwed, like me. I'm contemplating just calling up and saying I got the RROD. Has anyone done that before?

Just do it. If they whine say it RLOD on you before sending it, so a bump or something may have temporally got it working.

Okay, right... It seems my call to MS Support was cut off and my repair request didn't go through. Finally did it today (damn my 12 hour shifts).
What's with supplying my own box? Is that usual? Has it always been like this? And I can't use my 360 box either? Wonder what they'll think if I use my PS3 box?
All seems pretty awkward and irritating. I did think of getting in touch with Amazon and getting them to replace it. But after 6 months would they?

Well... getting the same type of weird artifacting that Dot50cal is getting. This is my 2nd xbox, got this one in Dec and it had a bad dvd drive that trashed a copy of GH3 and Mass Effect but considering that this probably won't 3RROD and instead give me some other error I am sorta dreading trying to deal with MS support to get another refurb without paying anything.

Dot50Cal, mine did that randomly since I was playing Half Life 2 last year. Lasted another 7 months.

Then today I try to play some GTAIV and get this

systems.jpg

It's about 18 months old or so. I got my system for Gear of War so October 06. Looks like now I get to enter in the MS customer service world which I hate already. Had a problem with a Live code that was expired already before I used it last summer. 4 service calls 2 promises to call back and never did the problem was forgotten by MS.

You're killing your 360 keeping it in that tiny place..

Launch european consolem bought December the 2nd 05

manufactured 1-11-05 (november 1)

#1 May 15 08

3RRoD After playing GTA 4 (I bought it yesterday)...

I'm back! RROD! 360 number two is now 6 feet under. I even saved my coffin from the first one. I hope this means I can send it back faster so I can get it back and e-bay this bastard.

My launch console = 3 RROD. Sending the console to repairs tomorrow.

Debating whether to buy a Falcon and sell the launch one when it gets back from repair.

I just got a 1/27/06 model here from a friend of mine with a single red light (I think Ana or is it Hana) died, however I just passed it to MS with a message saying that it's RROD'd. When this one gets back I'm going to EBAY it (I currently have 2 360's and don't see the need for a third)

not enough space for it too breathe :(

Well, my 360 just died. Bought it back in November last year, 3 months in the hard drive failed, and now the system won't read any disc. No red rings of death, just won't read any fucking disc. Not even my Family Guy DVD's. Piece of shit. Called them up, I should get the shipping label thing within in a day, hopefully they don't take too long to fix it. I've barely got to play GTA and I had just got Mass Effect from Gamefly today. Lame.

Holy shit theres been a lot of deaths in the past few days. GTA4's tail?

I bought GTA for the PS3 because I was worried about this... haven't used my 360 much since January.

I shut off GTA and I decided to watch a movie on my 360 it and it died when the movie started. Shut it off and turned it back on and got the RROD.

Now it seems to work okay again... I'm going to call them and have it sent in... I really hate to give up on the 360, but I'm really considering selling it once I get it back. I just need to find a good place that I can trade 1:1 MINT copies of my multiplatform games (COD4, AC, etc). :/

Mine just died. Made it all the way through GTA. Bioshock killed my 360 (second playthrough).

Fuck you in your shitty face, MS.

I had a launch unit.

edit: It's back alive now.....should I still send it in? I am thinking yes.

Sent my coffin to them yesterday. Guess I'll play Uncharted while I wait.

Its hard to tell but my 360 was angled so it was about 2-3 inches from the side of the entertainment center on the left, only the Wii on the right, nothing behind it and my air conditioner is directly behind the whole setup. Can't put it on the other side since my receiver creates heat, and the cable box and PS3 are in the middle, so that's the coolest area around my TV really. Besides my Wii is never on when I play 360. I tried the 'towel trick' to get back to GTA but it last all but 4 minutes before it froze and RROD on restart again.

Like I said it's been like that for quite awhile, did have some color defects like Dot50Cal's screenshot all the way back to Half-Life 2's release but only happened about 4 times total.

I know there is dust but in my area it's dusty as hell here in northern cali, I have to clean my TV every few days. You should see my car with all the pollen after a week.

My 360 (Launch, bought on Nov 22nd 2005) had started to act up and give me 2 lights lit up (both on left side of circle) (overheating)

Since it was out of warranty i decided to fix it myself, and tear open my Xbox and find out what was wrong. Turns out one of the fans wouldn't spin AT ALL and the other fan would only kick on about half the time. I ordered the 25$ Whisper Max fans from divineo and everything is working perfectly, and my xbox is running better than ever.

My launch 360 lasted nearly 2 years before falling victim to RROD..

And now my second 360 just stopped reading discs altogether, All I get is "Unplayable disc" no matter what disc I try .. I would open it up myself if it didnt void the warranty ..Instead I get to wait nearly a month to get it fixed, I was having so much fun with GTA IV to.

Gotta love the reliability of MS's console! ....

Well, I was hoping never to post in this thread, but my pro unit that I got at the end of '06 (manufactured August '06) just bit the dust last night. Two weeks ago I got my 1st freeze ever on it, and things just snowballed all of a sudden last night with 3 separate lockups within 30 minutes of Halo 3 MP, the third resulting in a red checkered pattern across my screen, but no RROD. Also, whenever I shut the console down it didn't do any Background Downloading like I had it set to. And this was with me always using this thing with either a fan stand or that Pelican Air Flo cooler attachment (which also worked when the console did Background Downloads), along with removing the harddrive whenever I shut it down (when I wasn't doing any d/l) to let even more hot air get out. Fortunately, I was paranoid enough to pay for an extended warranty, but the store I have to take it to is over an hour away, so I can't do it till the weekend. And I managed to find an X-Port for $10 so I was able to at least backup my gamesaves. Still more than a little irksome considering that I'm really jonesing for some Halo 3 right now. Yeesh.

Well.... here I am... posting in this thread for the first time. I'm sure you can guess why.

:(

On the positive side, I do have an extended warranty from Future Shop so that eases some of the pain, but goddammit MS, what the f**k? I was trying to finish off Mass Effect in time to start up GTA4 and I was all pumped for Ninja Gaiden II. arrrgghhh!!!!!

Are they sending back refurbs still or are all returns new models. Some GS employee is trying to tell me MS only sends back new models now. Also, if possible does anyone have a link to proof?
