"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Are they sending back refurbs still or are all returns new models. Some GS employee is trying to tell me MS only sends back new models now. Also, if possible does anyone have a link to proof?

They are still refurbs, but they are putting new dates on them, i.e. the date the refurb was manufactured.

The one I got back in December is doing pretty well so far, although the fan is annoyingly loud compared to my original 360. I had contemplated trading it in for one of the new HDMI models, but they finally fixed the DRM issue so it's a much tougher call.

My xbox live is up for the year the system tells me. I got a month free card, so I want to use that. But when I try to sign in, it just doesnt do so.

I start a game, try to sign in from there. System goes to acct. mgnt. But it locks up for whatever reason. I try again, but this time opening the tray, system tells me it cant read the disc.

Two problems; I cant access Xbox LIVE from the dashboard and I cant access it in-game.

Any help?

sounds like your cc got rejected, call microsoft.

Well, it happened. My 360 died on me last night (RROD). It had been making funny noises for some time, and I did get a lot of disk read errors. I’ve already called the support desk, but they ask me what colour the light on the power brick is. I didn’t pay attention last night. And since I’m currently at work I cannot check it.

Could someone tell me what colour light the power brick has when a hardware failure occurs? I'm guessing green.

I want to handle this a soon as possible since I hope to have it repaired before Ninja Gaiden II comes out.

Lately while playing Lost Odyssey, the game freezes up for a few seconds and when it starts to work again but the music cuts out. This has only been happening for a couple days now. Then just today it freezes again only this time the game doesn't start again and it locks up completely. I'm too afraid to play the game now because I lost over an hour of level grinding and I'm close to finishing it too. My question is, is my 360 dieing? How long till I see the three rings of death?

Got my 360 back from repairs with a 1 month xbox live card. 7 day round trip to get fixed. Not too shabby.

My first one took over a month back at the end of 06. :( I just called in my second one and they told me about a week to receive my coffin and about 2-3 weeks for the repair. I don't know why they call it a repair when all they do is send out a refurb.

I always tell em green when they ask that.

On my second xbox no less. But I got the product replacement warranty through best buy(again) but this time I'm going right to the store instead of sending it in to them and waiting three weeks like the last time(thats why I paid an extra $80, right?)

My question is, Will they let me keep my harddrive or are they gonna try to take the whole thing?

Well, another 360 doomed by the red lights. This one only made it to 9 months(compared to a year plus launch console). I have a BestBuy warranty, but I doubt I will trade it in for another 360. Debating whether to use towards a ps3 or something else.

When my first 360 went down, they wouldn't let me have the harddrive. Even though I told them to take the new harddrive from the replacement 360.

I figured since im waiting for my 360 to be returned from MS I would try fixing my original launch 360 in the meantime (it had died from RROD), I used the .pdf guide found in the first post here with success http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=599216, its been working flawless for 3 days now. I used arctic silver 5 thermal compound on the GPU & CPU.

This thread here (link) shows some pics which might help but I wouldnt use the hardware requirements listed in it, its better to use the .pdf's part list due to the extra washers.

p.s. of course this fix is only recommended if your 360 is out of warranty.

I ended up transferring all my saves from my HDD to a friends MU. Then when I took the system back, there was another person that was swapping out an elite and they were switching the HDDs w/ a new one @ the customer service desk. So maybe they changed their policy?

Well.... here I am... posting in this thread for the first time. I'm sure you can guess why.

:(

On the positive side, I do have an extended warranty from Future Shop so that eases some of the pain, but goddammit MS, what the f**k? I was trying to finish off Mass Effect in time to start up GTA4 and I was all pumped for Ninja Gaiden II. arrrgghhh!!!!!

How did your extended warranty thing work out with Future SHop. My first Xbox 360 had the extended from Future Shop as well but when it broke they (as in FS) told me to contact Microsoft. Strange as I bought the warranty from FS to avoid contacting MS.

Anyhow, MS had me send it in and I got back a refurb. Well I was not happy to say the least since the extended warranty from FS stated that if my original was unrepairable I would get a new machine. Well after much complaining and actually showing the employees at FS the exact words within the warranty I was able to trade in my refurb from MS and get a new box (of which I upgraded to an Elite). What gets me is the employee at FS stating that she was doing me a favor with this whole exchange and not to expect it to happen again. Of which I replyed that she was not doing me a favor at all and perhaps she should reevaluate her comment to along the lines that I was doing the company a favor by actually being in the store.

Long story even longer :lol , I did not get a new warranty from FS and instead picked up the extended warranty from MS. Which I had to put to good use as my Elite died last week. Sure I will most likely get a refurb, but this time I will be expecting it so know big deal. My Elite last about 10 months dying with graphic freezing and a RROD.

I remember reading on here(and other places) of people having no trouble getting their HDD switched. And of people having no luck. I guess it depends on the BB you go to really. The BB I went to, told me it was MS policy(to have everything shipped back to them). But I called up MS the next day and was told everything but the HDD.

My April 29th 07 launch Elite just died on me :( Guess it's time to go to BB in the morning to swap it.

My Dec. 07 falcon elite died on me in March... It was my 5th system and consequently the last straw. PS3 has become my primary HD console by default.

My april 29th elite had an HDD failure in Sept. swapped it at EB (warranty) and now I'm getting a shaky drive with disc read errors... Hopefully I can get it to last through the summer, get a refurb and probably sell it and buy a new one at BB before gears 2 comes out.

My 360 just died :(. Froze during GTA, and I knew what was coming. Sure enough, I booted it up and it froze on the startup screen. Once more an it was the three light salute.

It was a launch premium I think, so it had a good run. I bought it used from a friend... and here's the part where I'm an idiot. It's modded. Not anything that will get me banned from live, but it has a custom fan and light inside of it, so the warranty is void. (It was a good deal at the time, and this was before they had the replacement system)

So. Will Microsoft accept such trifles, or should I do the swap trick at a retail store?

Just see what happens when you sent it in to MS, they don't check all X360's. Most are being piled up and replacements are send out.

# Warranty Status: Out of Warranty

How about now? Can I call and whine enough to get them to send me a coffin, or is the swap trick my only choice?

First of all, if you do the swap trick, you're a douche.

Your 360 is still under warranty, anyways, so you'd be a needless, silly douche. The 360 has an extended warranty to three years for all xboxes, just for the 3RL error. You can send it in. Put in a request over the web.

re: the custom fan and the light, can you take them out, and replace you fan with the original, before you send it in? I'd do that, if you can.

edit: Forgot to knock on wood. *knocks on wood* My May/06 is still running fine.

my brother's day one x360 just RRODded on me.

why me and not him you ask ? because i have had his x360 since mine RRODded in nov. he lent me his console and took the one which was sent me as a replacement.
oh well, it lasted much longer than i would have thought anyway.
Chances i'll be getting one of the nifty new units as a replacement ? none ? thought so.

Not really a douche for swapping, though it's something I wouldn't do. But I also have zero respect for Microsoft's warranty, after many RRoD sequels after they "fixed" my 360s (yes plural). So when I was finally fed up with waiting three weeks+ for my 360 to be returned, only to break again six days later (yes it happened), I took it to a local place called Luna Games, had it returned to me the next day, and have been RRoD free ever since.

My 360 (Launch, bought on Nov 22nd 2005) had started to act up and give me 2 lights lit up (both on left side of circle) (overheating)...of the fans wouldn't spin AT ALL and the other fan would only kick on about half the time. I ordered the 25$ Whisper Max fans from divineo and everything is working perfectly, and my xbox is running better than ever.

I have an extra (Used, barely works)(1st Party) Xbox 360 fan if you need one.

I used to have two Xbox 360s and my 2nd one had RROD'd on me and the warranty sticker was broken but I sent it into M$ w/ no problems and they returned me a brand new 360.

only way to be sure is to check the power supply (if the unit is used or you have access to the powersupply).
If it's new check the box and look for the sticker where it shows the power rating.. you're looking for 175watts (as opposed to 203 watts).

Though there are some reports that Falcons have actually shipped out with 203 watt supplies as well.

I really do think leaving it at the dash to cool, once you're done playing keeps them lasting longer. I never turn mine off manually anymore (auto shut-off). If I do, I let it sit for hours first. I'd feel different if I paid for electricity...but I don't.

You do realize that almost all retailers record the serial number of a console when they sell it to you, right?

i don't recall ever adding my 360 death to this thread, so better late than never :P My system was a launch Premium 360.

mine died right around the time Ubisoft's Naruto came out, and I had popped it in to start playing it...watched the intro, got to the end of the intro when you start to control the character, and the game immediately froze :( upset as I was I didn't expect the worst, just thought i would have to sit through that damn intro again before I could save :P Hard powered down the machine, waited a minute, then booted up again, no issues. Started the game again, and watched the intro...this time the game doesn't even reach the same point, and freezes again. By this time I was expecting the worst, and just powered down the system to let it cool off.

Fast forward a few days later (not XB360 play in between). A friend comes over to play some VF5, so I boot up, swap discs, and head into the game...at which point the system goes RROD, and i am screwed :(

Good thing I already had the PS3 VF5 as well, so the gaming didn't stop with Microsoft's fuck up of eternity (aka, the 360 hardware). Sent it back and got the refurb, and just recently added the 120gb hdd to the mix, so hopefully it lasts a little longer this time, tho the thing sounds like a jet engine when on :P

A friend of mine who hasn't posted in this thread is on his 4th 360 now, most recent being the Elite, which has been ok for him, thankfully :P

....so I guess Falcons are suceptible to RRoD then?
I haven't been counting but I don't recall many (if any) Falcons with RRoD, at least in this thread. Psychotext was keeping track but since he's on a ban track it may be a while before we get any updates.
Falcons seem to RRoD about as often as PS3s fail, YMMV.

cool then, thanks!

Wow......very surprised to see my Xbox 360 returned to me today from sending it in for repair. I sent it in 4PM last Friday and the enw refurb unit was sitting on my doorstep this afternoon. Good job MS .... 5 day turn-around including the weekend.

So far the unit is running very good. It was very clean with no marks whatsoever. Very happy with the service (although I did pick up Oblivion for my PS3 yesterday hoping to give it some love while the Xbox was on hiatis).

Is there some reason the "check your repair status" link on the support page isn't working for me. It doesn't load and just gives me an error message. Is this because I'm on a Mac? Fuckers!

I couldn't remember if it was 2 or 3 years extended warranty :(. And it had the mod when I bought it, so I doubt the kid still has the original fan. I'll ask. Request over the web keeps getting denied, so I'mma have to call in the morning. Thanks for talking me out of the swap trick, that was really going to only be a last resort.

My page works fine.

Also, they already are sending me the coffin, nice!

Here's to hoping I can get a newer, quieter unit.

Just booted into Windows (Thank goodness for boot camp) and the page works. I really can't believe those MS fuckers will not allow you to view the Xbox service page on a Mac. I tried both Safari and Firefox too.

Also, the site gave me a tracking number but I enter it into Purolator's website and it doesn't work. :(

Fuck! It better not take two months like last time.

My 3rd 360 gave my wife the 3 red rings this morning while she was finishing up her yoga dvd (she plays it through the 360 as part of her morning exercise routine). Sigh, now I have to call Microsoft's craptacular customer service and have another coffin sent my way.

I got this refurbed unit back in early January and it gave up the ghost this morning. It was a premium, non hdmi, non falcon model. Part of me is happy b/c this one was so damn loud but it figures it red rings right before NG2. Sigh, oh well. It's not like I would have tons of free time playing it with me studying for the CA bar and all.

Wow dude. It wouldn't make a difference.

When the machine and fans are off, that's when the damage takes place with the original design.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

^

The machine is substantially cooler at that point than if you just shut it off after the GPU's a sizzlin'.

Has mine died? I went to turn it on today to download the NG2 demo and got sound but no picture. Checked all the connections twice over. Checked the inside of the HD cable and no loose pins. Went online to search for a solution and this was apparently one of the signs of the RROD. My brother, who was the last to play the console, said that the last time he played it everything was tinted green. That reminded me of all the other people that have had weird things going on with their display just prior to the RROD.

Got mine back after about 10 days, which isn't too bad. Apparantly there was a problem with the motherboard. It's working fine, though sounds different (but just as noisy). What really annoyed me though is that the tape they put over the disc tray has left a sticky residue on the chrome. Ridiculous! What's wrong with Microsoft. Honestly, they may be successful and rich etc but damn they can be dumb.

Well mine has been acting up like crazy lately. Mainly a whole lot of freezing issues, hell I'm lucky if I can put more than ten minutes into a game before having to restart my 360. I've also had some artifacting as well as the usual disc read errors, but they're not quite as prevalent.

Anyways, I was wondering if I would be able to exchange it for the Elite, and just pay the $100 difference? I renewed my warranty back in November, so that wont be a problem. And If I AM able to exchange it, what do I need to have in order to transfer my HDD files to my computer, and where do I get it?

I got mine back yesterday after it RRoD'd two weeks ago. Is it normal for them to replace or otherwise fix the DVD drive? It's quite a bit less noisy now, and doesn't make some of the horrible sounds that it used to make.
